The foundation of making it is creating characters that look alive and have personality. What makes a good design? Is there enough balance and flow in my drawings?

I'm designing a character for a comic I'm doing for fun. She's supposed to be a mushroom that had her wish granted to be turned into a human. The mushroom head is a big poof of messy hair and she has to tie her hair down with a cloth.

Good drawing/art=/= good character design.
The Mona lisa looks good, but you don't get much more than you pay for it.
If the character: Looks "good", appearance is a clear indicator of personality, and is memorable, then that's how you know.
Take Space Dandy from the show Space Dandy. You don't even have to have seen it, but from this one frame you can tell his personality, his attitude, I bet you can even make a guess what his voice sounds like.

>If you can't immediately tell their backstory, personality, and history just by looking at them, it's bad.
Yeah, if you´re making a children´s storybook. Otherwise, your ¨test¨ is complete nonsense. The most an observer can possibly gather from a character´s appearance alone is their occupation, origin (if real-world based), and maybe a clue about their alignment (good-neutral-bad). Without a world and story for the character, you really have nothing at all.
>The Mona lisa looks good, but you don't get much more than you pay for it.
The mona lisa isn´t a character design.
Notice how the image you posted shows him in a story-based context. Looking at his character sheet alone tells us nothing. The most one could guess is ¨this guy is probably into vintage clothing and has seen the movie Grease too many times¨ I have no clue if he´s good or bad, where he works, what his backstory is, etc. People don´t live in a vacuum. You cannot have good character design without a story.

You make the characters first, then worry about the world later. That's story creation 101.
You completely left out the first half of the mona lisa analogy. Just because something looks good doesn't mean it's good character art, which is why I used the example to say although that demonic pink creature posted earlier looked nice, it didn't really offer much.
If youre unable to get personality from that reference sheet, thats just a lack of ability on your part friend. Like >>4815333 said, you can tell personality and a bit of character, not from just the clothing, but the body posture as well.
>>4815351
This doesn't even make much sense. Flash gordon released 1980, Grease Released 1978. >You make the characters first, then worry about the world later. That's story creation 101.
Because studios/authors hire concept artists and costume designers to create images and clothing based on nothing right? It´s not impossible to draw a person and decide what world they live in after, however it´s a poor method that´s guaranteed to leave you with a story full of plot-holes. Even Feng Zhu stresses the importance of having a written basis for your designs. It´s obvious you don´t actually write or design, just specialize in being a 4chan contrarian.
>You completely left out the first half of the mona lisa analogy. Just because something looks good doesn't mean it's good character art,
I didn´t comment on that part, because I don´t disagree with that statement.
>If youre unable to get personality from that reference sheet, thats just a lack of ability on your part friend.
I literally said exactly what I gathered from his appearance. Can you read?
>This doesn't even make much sense...yadda yadda
0/10, anon. Almost all of Space Dandy´s design is clearly based on Danny Zuko from Grease. Just because he´s wearing a different jacket and boots doesn´t change that. Only flippant contrarians like you and people who lack knowledge of American pop culture like >>4815355 would say he isn´t.

>Notice how the image you posted shows him in a story-based context. Looking at his character sheet alone tells us nothing.
Are you blind?
>People don´t live in a vacuum.
Exactly, which is why people are able to infer things about a well-designed character by looking at it.
>You cannot have good character design without a story.
Yes, you can. Take the initial appearance of Ryuko from Kill la Kill, before any plot has occurred. We can tell what kind of person she is. We can see she wears a sukajan or souvenir jacket. In Japan, the sukajan has been associated with juvenile delinquency. She doesn't button her white shirt fully, and ties her ribbon loosely as well, indicating a devil-may-care attitude. She has a red streak in her hair, and in Japan having unnaturally colored hair is considered a rebellious act. Because many anime characters have strange hair colors naturally, her unnaturally color is constrained to a small, individual portion of her hair. This gives the impression that she chose to dye her hair and separate herself from the collective. The color red is also a color that we collectively associate with aggression. Putting all of that together, we can tell that she's hot-headed, rebellious, scrappy, and self-assured, and we can tell that without ever watching the show.

I think this is a good idea that's made bad by people taking it too literally. We as artists DO need to stylise and push reality to suit our artistic goals, but it should always suit the needs of the project. Yea, that would definitely count as story.

If your story involves apace travel, what s the OCs role? Are they the captain of the ship, a simple crew member? Etc etc

Even building on that, there are genres that can effect how you design it.
Space travel can morph into firefly, guardians of the galaxy, cowboy bebop, or just a generic design like 2001 space a space odessey

These are old pieces and i'll keep it short.
It started out as a armor possessed by forest spirits and plants, to a plant knight.
The lore i gave it is basically that humans died out and a few thousand years later fruit people had evolved.
The name comes from the Vaccinium Angustifolium which is a type of blueberry.
>What makes a good design?
That's highly dependent on what you want to create, the story you want to tell and the theme, whether it's fantasy or sci-fi and so on.
I think, in most cases, they must reflect the world they live in, their attributes/personality and storytelling/lore.
The best outcome would be that whoever sees your character, can tell and imagine where, when and how it belongs and the design can explain the "whys".
>Why does this character have this and that?
>Why is this like that?
People don't like inconsistencies.
Take my piece for example.
Besides the obvious lack of skill,
you could very well point out that if the character is a berry person why does his weapon resemble a berry? What is it made of, other berry people? Why does he have a berry on his head?
And why is a pirate and a gunner together with japanese warriors? What's the reason for that?

You know, this type of things. Of course, you don't have too create a whole universe just for one character, sometimes it's the other way around, but the more thought you put into the design, the better usually the outcome.

You have additive character design, where you have something and you add elements to it to tell a story - a worn out piece of clothing, a weapon, some piece of weird technology, sentimental jewelry, etc. But by doing this you can stuff it up and over crowd your design with meaningless shit. Thats what you've ended up with. Too much shit.

There's also subtractive character design, where you put together a mishmash of stuff that looks cool or is thematic, and then you start taking away. Take away all that is not necessary until you are left with the soul of the design. This is what you need to do.

Or you need to learn to iterate your damn designs and try out different things and silhouettes instead of settling on the first design you come up with.

Look at the color template used.
It's merely 4 main colors used.
And the main character is obviously the blue/light blue.
And orange/yellow is used for small objects as a contrast to attract your eyes to look at them.
If it's a mix of blue/lightblue + orange/yellow at 50:50 ratio, it will look bad as well because there's no main color.

Yeah, why not. You're not going to school to learn how to graduate from school, you're going to improve your skills and show the world your interests and perspective.

I like that design quite a bit, lots of personality and fun proportions. I'm unsure what the metal things are but it does make me want to know more. One problem is his entire body is roughly the same value and color except for his face and hair; I'd find ways to make his boots darker or his tassels lighter for example.

>> No.4852703

>>4849542
Your centers of gravity are all a little off, makes the entire drawing feel unstructured because the two on the right are about to fall over (while the one on the left is stiff). I like the designs themselves though, convey their personalities well and they're very distinct from each other. Nice color harmony too, though the values might be a little dark. I'd say a big thing holding these back is your lines; they're all the exact same width, so either vary them up more or keep them as is and add shading.

OCs are just characters for a story. Once you put a story behind it and get enough people interested, you'll have a following.

Every character in fiction is an OC of an artist/creator. To say, OCs are bad is to say creativity is bad.

If you think creativity is bad and only draw fanart of the FOTM then your art is as soulless and unoriginal as you are.

>> No.4861096

>>4861048
Not him but I hate "OCs" because the vast majority of the time they DON'T put a story behind it. They just draw them 3/4 looking to the left over and over again, they write encyclopedias about their interests and magical abilities, they do crossovers with their friends' OCs, they do everything you can possibly do with a character except actually write a story for them. There's obviously nothing wrong with Original Characters, but OCs are not the same thing.

>> No.4862927

>>4861096
And why is that bad? Sometimes you want to draw portraits looking to the left, or do friendly trades with friends. Instead of fanart, you want to draw a design of your own.

Why are people treating making characters for fun like it is a job? No, not every character needs a story. Stop comparing hobbyists on twitter with comic artists or writers.

>> No.4862952

>>4862927
You're acting like it's only tween girls who draw once a month doing this stuff (I don't like it then either, but it's more excusable). There are countless artists who work professionally who still do it; I think of people like Temmie Chang, who's a fantastic artist but she can't even decide on her OC's name. The problem is they're too afraid to ever commit to writing because it could turn out badly so they just worldbuild and worldbuild for years for something that will likely never even happen. They WANT to tell a story, but they can't start yet because they haven't determined their OC's favorite ice cream flavor. You're never going to be "ready", just do it.

You are full of shit, why do you care so much if an artist takes up writing too? Those are two entirely different skills. If they do an awful job at writing, I bet you will be the first to point a finger and complain about the mediocre result.
Yes, you should start even if you are no good, but if you have no passion for it, why should you force yourself to do it?

A design is different from a full fledged character, so OC can mean original creation. A "doll" of your own for you to draw when you want something simple. It is barebones, but I find this completely fine.
Are you saying that people are not allowed to draw their one-shot ideas, custom game characters, DnD heroes or anything of the short because they don't have a wikiarticle detailing their adventures? Sometimes, people draw for the joy of drawing, just for themselves and friends only, shocking concept I know.
People need to get off their high horse and stop trying to impose their preferences on other creators. Let people do what they think they can do best, they don't need a random nobody telling them that their designs are wasted unless they have released a novel beforehand.

>> No.4862984

>>4862964
>If they do an awful job at writing, I bet you will be the first to point a finger and complain about the mediocre result.
No, I actually won't; even if something sucks I can always find things to appreciate. I can't appreciate anything though if they don't make it in the first place.

>Are you saying that people are not allowed to draw their one-shot ideas, custom game characters, DnD heroes or anything of the short because they don't have a wikiarticle detailing their adventures?
uh
I am literally saying the opposite

If they only draw a character one time that's just an illustration so it's irrelevant. If they draw their game character or DnD hero, that obviously has a purpose in a story, doesn't it? Now if they made a profile for a DnD character, wrote pages and pages about how they would act in DnD, but never PLAYED DnD, what would be the point?

>> No.4863005

>>4862984
>even if something sucks I can always find things to appreciate
Then I don't understand why a design or OC cannot be left as it is? You seem to put a lot of effort into trying to convince others that it sucks as a practise
>if they only draw a character once that's just an illustration
Yes, now imagine they want to draw the same design a couple times more. Still don't see how repetition guarantees a need for story.
>what would be the point
The point would be their personal gratification and enjoyment, (similar to the purpose of an OC), which doesn't immediately tie to you or their job or their follower base and that somehow, according to your logic, makes it bad, lesser or a waste of time
