How do I paint like Bouguereau in Photoshop? Do I need one of those fancy oily brushes? Textured brushes? Do I use flow jitter or not? Should I blend with soft brush, hard brush, or mixing brush? Are there any artist that do stuff like this? Any good tutorials on how to achieve the trad look with digital painting?

>> No.4810729

If bougereau could do it with regular paint brushes, you can do it with the hard round

>> No.4810761

>>4810729
...except the hard round is trash compared to actual trad brushes? There's a reason there are countless packs of brushes attempting to emulate trad ones.

Would that be the best way to approach it, though? Would it yield the best results? Would it feel the most natural or efficient?

The hard round isn't trash, it's the best digital brush. At least it's my favorite...

It's grisaille. It's an answer not many people on /ic/ seem to like, but Bouguereau was a French academic painter, and that's what they did. They used very soft brushes and thin glazes of paint, so there's not much brush texture to speak of. What matters more, in the context of a digital artist trying to recreate a grisaille style painting, is fine brushwork and transparency control.
This is all hard round.

Well it's not trash but it's trash compared to trad brushes. My point is "regular paint brushes" are by far superior than the standard hard round, and you're not getting the effect they provide in trad by using the hard round in digital. Instead you'd actually need some custom brushes to help simulate the effect of trad on digital. Personally I'd recommend some combination of custom brushes and the mixer paint tool in PS.

bougs was able to achieve his striking style through using LOTS of glazing layers.
So i guess you should use a lot of layers with a low opacity brush and slowly build up the color if you want to duplicate what he did.

Thank you anons. Do you know of any digital artists that paint in this style? And about standard resources to learn about glazing/grisaille?

https://www.deviantart.com/themichaelmacrae/art/Sybil-Portrait-834867177 Michael was able to emulate a similar style when he painted this (middle right side for the painting), he kept posting his progress in the draw threads, next time he post you can ask him and he might respond (but don't ask him too much or you might scare him).

holy fuck, I guess one can get pretty far with just the round brush. Did you do all the blending with it, no mixing brush? When you say round brush you mean both soft and hard, or just the hard one? Did you paint most of it directly and through observation or did you approach it as if you were working traditionally?
Thanks for sharing, anon, it looks so good and proves that brush is enough to start practicing.

it's long time ago I don't remember the details, but no mixer brush. Mostly hard round, adjust shape to ellipse (to mimic the shape of real brushes). Use number keys to adjust transparency.

Large canvases and pre mixing oil paints on the palette before applying it to the canvas. Not mixing color on canvas. You has to paint like you seen those fill in number paintings. Advance study of anatomy and values and color mixing.

That painting is definitely done on hard round but, while it shows that you can produce good stuff with any default brushes, it also clearly showcases it's shortcomings. Zoomed out on the thumbnail it looks absolutely flawless, but as soon as you zoom the image to fit the screen the rough transitions between gradients become very apparent and you get that digital look. It still looks good, but one can only imagine what he could do with a proper custom brush instead.

>> No.4812004

>>4811995
Well, it's one of the biggest shortcomings of digital period. Stamp based brush engines will invariably create soulless mark making that's devoid of the spontaneity of traditional brush work.
