Are there different “steps” or “levels” to figure drawing? In some pictures it’s more comfortable for me to draw some contour lines around, and other times
I try to do more stick figure like but I’m completely beginner. Some examples ive seen of figure drawings are just stick figures like in proko’s video, but obviously they capture motion and action way better than I can, and other times they have like beanbag bodies or a semblance of girth and form to their limbs or something.

I’m just curious what to aim for? I haven’t studied anatomy yet, I’m focusing on gesture for now but I’m not sure if I should try for any specific style. This is the reference pic for example

>> No.4809141

>>4809132
Not even really sure what you’re asking, but some poses are definitely harder than others to draw.

Also, no rules, just tools. Sometimes I jump straight into form, sometimes i start with rhythms, sometimes ellipses. It depends on what you need for that specific drawing. I highly recommend cycling through Vilppu’s course quickly and frequently. Bring up all your skills at once, don’t get hung up on one stage like gesture. His course is the most comprehensive I know of, you literally need just his course and a Bridgman book and you’re set for life.

On the left I was gonna try to do some more drawing of the body but as you can see, it looked terrible. On the right I tried to simplify it into less lines, but I felt like I had to add more to stress how sharp some angles are, and I feel as though it actually captures the gesture much better. Still, I don’t know if I’m headed in the right direction, if I should use more lines, less lines, more body contours, less, etc. or maybe I’m overthinking it and as long as it gets the gesture down then I’m ok. Would anyone mind sharing their thoughts, or give any advice?

Sorry anon, I was making it in two posts so it was odd. I’m not ar my computer so I can’t edit a picture to show what I mean but basically some gesture drawing is like pic related, while some has actual boxes for the torso or hips, or more form on the arms , etc. I am wondering if I should go for the more stick figure look now, and the form adding will come later, or if I should try to capture the torso with the sort of bean bags or boxes that people use

Yeah, some poses can’t be done with a stick figure. (Like poses with foreshortening and overlap) some poses are also best done with rhythm lines and stick figures. You need to develop a robust toolbox of constructive techniques to help you tackle each situation.

That’s why I recommended Vilppu. His course is the most comprehensive toolbox I know. There’s so much I want to say to you about drawing right now but I can’t fit it all into one post, so instead I’m pointing you to my teacher

Set sketch layer to multiply, and preferrably a dark red tone.
Ambient light is your background colour. Outdoors is bg + sky, for example. In your case the ambient light is white, that's why the reflected light on the face is a desaturated verion of the shadow
Block your base colours first, then block the shadows, then the light parts. You can use layer modes to adjust the values and hues. The painting should look good without any rendering and from far away it should seem as if it were finished.
Don't use tiny strokes in irrelevant areas (looking at the hands here). Notice how the original is more simplistic.
Don't use light values in shadow areas, the eyes are too white

I agree with the other guy saying to ignore Proko on gesture. Totally disregard everything he says on the subject because he will just confuse you. I wish I had never seen his gesture videos because they held me back.

Gesture only means quickly capturing the pose and your goal is to make it readable. Where are the limbs? Are they pointed towards or away from you? Where are the stretches and squishes? The gesture should appear 3-d if you can.

Yes, Vilppuu is the best. Huston is good too but you can skip ahead on his old masters analysis.

Its a weird concept. Its fan art for a book by Jacques Vallee. In it he theorizes that there could be a psychic plane or dimension that exists within ours and that ufo experiences are like us bumping into beings or eachother in that dimension and not knowing how to interpret that stimuli. Its strange and interesting, and refreshingly not him stating what he believes, but theorizing broadly and scientifically. He is pretty good about listening and postulating without falling into an "everything is aliens and theyre real and everywhere" hole.

I was 25 minutes into drawing this then I realized it was pointless. From your original drawing I can tell you're on the right path and nothing I could draw/redraw would really help you.

The construction is solid and honestly I'm probably not better at rendering/light&shadow than you at this point.

From your post you already are aware of your deficiencies, the best advice I feel comfortable telling you is to keep up the goodwork. With constant practice, you'll continue to improve.

The problem with throwing that term around is that in reality you have to symbol draw eventually, unless you go to the extreme of becoming a dot-matrix printer

you should use these forms(squares cylindres) to learn how to draw a hand and then use even simpler forms or shapes to to construct a hand, if you need to use cirlcles and squares just to draw a hand you are too beg yet, not that you won't be able to draw/construct with them but it will take you about ten times longer than if you have learned what you are attempting to draw beforehand, right know you are lacking all the basics info about your hands you don't even know the basic stuff like the shape onf the fingers that arent completely straigh and are not aligned equally or the shape of the hand or the correct placement of the joints and their anatomy overall, im not saying you should draw like a pro but you are an absolute beg like a doubt you ever read any book about hands, anyway to be able to deconstruc using squares cilinders and shit it will be easier if you can feel the forms unironically, but right know it doesn't look like.

as for symbol drawing is what your brain think of what something looks like instead of the actual image

You have created a flat 2d surface, unlike >>4811183 where in some hands they've drawn, you can literally see (or rather feel the form of) the rectangles without them even being outlined or bolded out. I failed again, I can see the mistakes, all of them but I don't know why I keep failing like this
Face should be smaller and lower, as of now it looks like the face doesn't match the size and placement of the ear and skull
Jaw is at the wrong angle
the side we can't see of his face is more diagonal, i drew it almost on top, place an imaginary line there
mouth and lower lip dont wrap around, the shadow below it doesnt help in giving a round sensation
lines are messy and repulsive
still cant shade
Something else to mention, I can't draw at small sizes this was meant to be smaller but it kept adding to itself

if I really wanted a creative output and had no pens to draw with and had to use a mouse I would just learn all the ins and outs of photoshop editing

I do that but it's pretty much graphic design at that point, not drawing. Still a nice creative skill to have.
