I painted this while looking at that exact picture and I eventually just closed the tab because I couldn't replicate anything at all, I just concluded he uses automatic brushes or something to paint skin and lightning. Using the color picker, every little part of the skin is a different color and I doubt he painted it pixel by pixel SLIIIGHTLY changing the 238 pink to a 242 reddish pink at random times.
I can't even comprehend how the colors change so frequently it's like 3d artists are infinitely spinning the color wheel in all strokes.

Though today I saw a good image explaining the red, yellow and blue hues on the face. Still, they change the colors too much, that can't be done by a human

he got sick of making a painting taking months or years, this style comes from building up lots of very transparent layers. If you watch his never process videos he uses a much more opaque brush and tries to pick the final colour right off the bat, it's pretty increadible that he is able to paint that way but I prefer the look of his older stuff.

I saw Ruan Jia at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, rike you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and gesture drawing in the air in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bags of rice in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bags and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any hue desaturbation,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bag and put them in a cart and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
