Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

From what I observed, doppel doesn't limits his shading to the light source, pic related, I've seen him put highlights inside shadows which makes little sense if you only do cel shading, from what I observed and what you can observe from pic related is that he likes to form the shapes by using shadows, and the deeper the shape is the darker the shape gets, I at first had a lot of trouble shading in drawings where there is too much shadow, so I tried to use darker values first and then use lighter values for shading, it's what worked me, mind you I'm in no way shape or form that good in shading, although I do think I have the basics somewhat covered.

When? I'm on Perspective 14/21, 25gb worth of video that took month to check and practice and he has yet to show anything involving figures really or anything organic, or 3 pts. It's really hard to make it all stick when it feels irrelevant to what I draw the most, even if the principles apply to everything I still don't see how to actually apply it to a quick figure sketch which is all I want for now
Don't know what I'm missing. Olson shows how to decide the HL and VP from the start and how to find them from photos, but when you actually draw both approaches don't work, at least for me I sketch a figure first and then try to fix the persp after, that's where I'm lost, I don't see any way to decide the VP and HL that way

I did want to reply to myself because I forgot o complain about my struggles with face proportions and expressions as well. I feel like I’m getting a little better at anatomy but everything involving the head is still really tricky. Even drawing certain hairstyles in perspective. When I’m in a rush I really mess up on overall proportions too. I’m okay with drawing kinda longcat bodies, but seeing when I mess up with broad shoulders or very long torsos that messes my brain up. This is one of my worse recent sketches.you can see the face is rough too.

How do i learn lineart?

Let's say I have a piece of sketch done.
It looks good enough because the messy lines leave space for imagination.
But once i draw the lineart, it looks bad and boring.
Also, my current lineart is the typical newbie mistake of having the exact same line weight.
Although people always say just keep drawing and eventually the lineart will improve, but i feel like i won't improve unless i have more knowledge about it or study about the topic itself.

you can get better line art by internalizing perspective and form. the reason a lot of line art looks dead is because the artist is too focused on making "nice lines" and following along the shape of their sketch. once you can let go of that, and instead focus on describing the form and perspective, your lineart will look much more natural

the goal is to focus on what you're drawing (taking overlaps, proximity, texture, etc. into account), instead of paying attention to the sketch underneath. the sketch is only to keep your proportions in check

Bros I need some help here.
I feel like I'm slightly off with the placement on this head but I can't figure out where. And if I shift it up it somehow just ends up looking worse.
Can someone help me out? Also ignore the hair, it's just somewhat of a placeholder for now.

I do already but I keep facing the very same issues if i do (mismatched eyes. lack of 3d on overall structure. wrong mouth placement). I know what is wrong and despite trying to study regarding those areas both real and stylized heads I still fuck it up big time.

On the ones with face mask you can see the eyes don't match properly. Becomes quite obvious once you flip it. On the one without all the misakes on the face are obvious and all related to feature placement.

sorry for interrupting, but this is a topic i'm interested in as well.
This is my latest face drawing.
There's something wrong about my face, but i can't really tell what it is.
Is it because there's too less information in the drawing (missing hair, body, background, etc) to distract my brain from noticing the error?
The front view face definitely doesn't help at all either.

Advice was being aware of the planes of the head when placing features, problem is
>Stylization heavily warp these

Sai is quickly becoming outdated. For lineart and cell shade works use CSP. It's more expensive but has a lot of great tools.

If you're going for classic anime style soft rendering use thin lineart with cellshading instead of lineless painting. Blend the cellshading for the soft look

being "aware" of planes and shapes isn't enough.you need to place them on paper and to do that you need to be able imagine them in front of your eyes like real 3d object, you are basically watching a wire frame on maya, autocad but in your mind.if you cant do properly find an asaro head on internet and study it,copy it and try to recreate it from your imagination.
some people can learn just by drawing a lot i am not that kind of guy and this helped me

It better.. I did a free trial on CSP and I just couldn't really work with it. I didn't try too much to actually get into it either to be honest.
But the more I draw the more I'm starting to realize that there are a few things that I just can't do with sai which is kind of frustrating.

I want to start working on my backgrounds. How do the japanese do it actually? Most of the backgrounds in anime are so nicely done, seems like so much effort.
