I'm trying to write down all the fundamentals I need to put immediate attention on, as well as resources teach them. Basically, my list so far is: Anatomy, Light and Shadow, Perspective, Technique, Drapery, Stylization.
My question is, should I make it a goal to practice each of these in one day? Or is it better to only dedicate a specific day to each from a week, sort of like weight lifting (today is perspective day, tommorrow is anatomy day etc). Is developing a rigid schedule of fundies to learn unrealistic, and i should "just draw'? I want to try, but need advice.

>> No.4796008

>>4795999
I didn't say that you should limit yourself to one single tool, what I'm saying is that as a beginner you would benefit a lot from drawing in with ink, as that would make you think more carefully about each line. HRB isn't necessarily as effective as ink in making you think about line economy, but is close enough since a lot of strokes with it will look messy and difficult to read. You can use any brushes you want, but if you want to get better fast you have to be confident with the hard round brush.

You focus on observation, technique, shape/form and perspective first for about 6ish months or until you are comfortable with all of them and can do them okay then you can move on into the others. The four I mentioned are the key to being able to learn anything more complex in art. Try looking for a first year art school course list for one of the top schools to see what order they are taught.

I usually use a textured brush with pen pressure opacity instead of a soft brush. notice how in this painting the textured brushes all look like they're on surfaces with very gradual changes in values such as the mans forehead, the womans sleeves/under her breast, the wall behind them whereas the values with stark contrast have very hard edges such as under her neck or the man on the rights cheekbones or the shadow from her glasses. Find some textured brushes you like and go to town on some value studies, maybe even try recreating this drawing.

It's really not that hard. After the initial period of getting used to it, the only real limiting factors are
1. The speed - there will always be a miniscule delay between your hand and the marks appearing on screen
2. The precision - tablets are pretty advanced, but they are still not PERFECTLY sensitive to every movement of your hand
3. The page rotation aspect, which can be mitigated with canvas rotation tools

But in my opinion the advantages it offers far surpass the minor downsides.

It is just a tool. Are you talking about color sampling from reference or color sampling areas of your painting in order to render? If it's the former, I would recommend paying attention to how colors change with lighting so you can do it yourself instead of relying only on reference for color. If it's the latter, then the only thing I will caution is that the more you sample the color the closer your painting will get to grey. All you need to do to remedy this is to throw a separate color in periodically.

On Instagram your posts are, as far as I know, inevitably going to be compressed and it shows more obviously when zooming in. However, since this is the norm for all posts, it's not really something to worry about too much. You can use Instagram simply as another place to host your art and post full-res work on another website that you can link on your profile. Another option for better-resolution posting is to use stories and highlights, but it's not ideal for providing a gallery format for your work, nor for posting anything that's not a tall rectangle.

Not sure if this helps at all, but the far left button in pic related allows you to post non-square images.

Obviously being way far off is something to be avoided, but I've been watching several lectures of good artists and getting the likeness right never seems to be the main focus(if it's off by a bit they don't seem to mind) and they usually are just trying to get the construction right.

Is it even necessary to formally study all the theory and crap behind perspective? Like, I know Kim jung gi said he mostly just relied on his intuition and observation prior to when he was in college. I’m nowhere near that, but I find just drawing shit I like is far more enjoyable than have to autistcially study roberston’s theories, though I do find some of his stuff helpful and interesting. I did a bunch of motorcycle sketches today, mostly trad but pic related is two I did digital. IMO it looks fine, yeah it's pretty badly compressed but by instagram standards it doesn't seem any worse than usual. The design is communicated clearly enough. Instagram isn't even really meant for zooming, so quality like this is understandable and not unusual (and I use Instagram a lot).

Also, it does appear that high contrast, flat images don't take to JPEG compression very well.

Either, as long as you learn both.

For flat color, there are so many different ways you can do this. It can even depend on how messy or disconnected your line art is. Play around with brushes tailored to filling line art, play around with the threshold of the fill tool, play around with the magic wand and subtract any artifacts, some software like GIMP (Smart Colorization) and Krita (Colorize Mask) even have "smart" tools for coloring line art, but these tools have their own flaws as well and generally require some manual tweaking.
For shading those flat colors, there are a lot of ways you can do this too. One way to do this is to use tools that the software provides for this (for Photoshop this is Clipping Masks, for Krita this is Inherit Alpha/Alpha Lock/Preserve Alpha).
Maybe you should just use a search engine to find tutorials specific to your software.

>> No.4813648

>>4813490
There's a trick where you use the magic wand to select the background space, and then inverting the selection so you can use the bucket tool to quickly fill in your subject with a single color. Then you can set the layer to preserve opacity and coloring within the lines becomes a lot easier.

>Gesture drawing
In the beginning of my studies, I was able to get quick 1 -2 minute gestures down and they looked decent. Then I had to take a month off to heal arm injuries.

Upon returning, my ability to draw figures from imagination improved quite a lot, however when I attempt gesture drawing, I'm really bad even at 5 minutes with reference. The gesture drawings from before I had to stop were way better than they are upon my return. What the fuck gives?

>Art school
I really want to go to art school, but it's so goddamned expensive and I'm not in a position in life to go anyway. Online classes are fine, but I don't get feedback nor do I really have the drive to go at it consistently. I'm not at an age where I can just go to art school and it fucking kills me.

>Work ethic
I used to have such an amazing time learning and practicing until I injured myself. That caused me to break the habit I developed and now art is just a chore. I have so many ideas I want to get down, but do not have the technical skills nor the patience to do so that is satisfactory.

The better I got at drawing, the worse my gestures looked. I used to symbol draw my way through the body rapidly and habitually, but once I started really understanding 3d form I stopped giving a damn about making a nice looking drawing within a quick time frame. I sculpt out all of my drawings slowly, carefully, and precisely, and by God I understand so much more now. My knowledge base grows, but my sketches don't necessarily improve anymore, superficially.

So I'd say, don't worry about it. Not unless your goal is to make a passable drawing within an arbitrary time limit.

Interesting, that's reassuring to read. I think I'm symbol drawing as well, for sure simplifying anatomy when I draw from imagination. My figures looks very organic and dynamic, but my quick-timed gestures are fucking garbage.

Hello /ic/
I'm a /beg/ thats been drawing for a year and a few months now. I draw every day for multiple hours, I try balancing drawing and learning along with money making and it's been quite tough. My anatomy still sucks a lot and im always spending a lot of time trying to fix my errors. If I try to do a quick drawing, they end up like pic related which was around 40 minutes. I also have to learn perspective which has been incredibly confusing. I'm reading framed perspective and theres so much to digest
I really want to start learning to animate as well but I also feel like I have no idea how the human body moves from imagination. A lot of my drawing involves using reference to try and learn as well

What the heck do I do. There's so much to learn. I want to be able to animate characters one day

your mistake is thinking that you're being asked to draw something that comes out looking good. you can draw whatever you want, it's just more than likely going to look like shit - what you're meant to learn from this is to stop focusing so much on how things turn out, and learn to enjoy the process of drawing despite the fact that it'll look bad for now.

of course it'll get better, since you're doing other things to improve your skills, but right now you shouldn't be avoiding drawing other shit just because you're scared it's gonna look bad.

>> No.4817433

I watched the videos. It's not that I'm scared, it's that I lack the basic skills to make this stuff even look like something. I can't draw stick figures and scenes of symbol drawings for hours on end. I've actually done that so far, and it's getting tedious and not fun, while I'm learning how to draw lines.

yeah, i know it's hard. it's nothing wrong with you - it's just that these mental blocks exist that cause us to fall into the same patterns we always have.

try not to do the stick figure thing - you know stick figures aren't what you ultimately want to draw, but you're drawing them because they're all you know right now, and that's pigeonholing you into very limited area.

you have to venture out into those uncomfortable spaces. even though drawing a full person who's not just made of sticks - drawing something that is more fleshed out - is going to be hard and it's going to come out badly. but try it anyway.

i don't know what you're interested in drawing or why you're learning to draw - maybe it's because you wanna draw characters, maybe you wanna draw cool mechs, or whatever else - but try to draw those things you're actually interested in, and let yourself do it badly.

put it like this: theres nothing more imaginative than your mind of course, but you cant pull knowledge you dont have out of it; referencing builds up this knowledge and creates a strong base for later. you can totally make it later on without references, but thats when your visual library is so large you can understand figure through mental visualisation instead of needing a tangible subject
basically, drawing from reference is the same as quickdrawing sessions in art school with a live model, where you're understanding whats being put in front of you so you can later just recall this information.
