teal lines guy is not very good with anime or stuff drawn from imagination is he...

his re-draws for the cartoons look like a 14 year old westerner trying to draw anime. why did his anatomy suffer so much in the redraws when that timelapse video looks great? was he reffing a photo in that one?

like the limps look like sausages and noodles with none of the muscle or bone structure that's structurally supporting it.

>> No.4780561

>>4780559
he was reffing a photo in the webm, it was from a study thread maybe two months ago. all the rest of these redlines/guides/tutorials/whatever are from around 2016 I think, so he's improved a lot since then

Whenever I see tealguys crits I'm always impressed at his ability to word such abstract qualities in art so definely. I could never explain what I find wrong with my shit like that in words. At best it's "not 3D enough" or "stiff". I guess that makes the difference in a good vs bad teacher.

Quick and dirty reference. Basically instead of flowing line an straight you describe the gesture with 2D Shapes. I find it's easier to see tilts and perspective on the figure with the envelope and to build construction on top of it

Mind you, I learned it both ways and both can work equally well, and learning the envelope actually helped me understand CSI more, but I feel like "CSI" is closer to Vilppu's approach to figure drawing (feel the form), which is intuitive and may not work for everyone, rather than say Hampton's approach with is more construction based.

>> No.4780973

>>4780966
Honestly "envelope" from what i'm gathering seems more like step2 construction and like you've internalized the gesture, which is CSI step

>> No.4780976

>>4780966
Now that I look at I fucked up the left most legs' gesture, but hope it's still helpful.

>>4780973
I'm not a teacher, and I most likely haven't conveyed everything as it was taught to me, all I can say is that starting with 2d shapes helped me understand gesture more than traditional gesture lines

>> No.4780987

>>4780966
I'm not far into Vilppu but I'm sure he states you should understand the shapes and use the gesture as a guide on how they're twisting, moving, and interacting to each other

Vilppu deals with shapes too, he just didn't "connect" for me personally. Honestly not shitting on him, just it took perspective from somewhere else for him to really make sense to me.

>Ironically your "shitty CSI" doodle has the most life out of all of this

Thanks, I just find it a little cumbersome to add forms on top of it.
