Their ability to break down a form is crazy.
You can't learn that only by drawing from life. They had to learn from some books and then apply to drawing from life.

Or did they only learn from teachers in academy?

If you want study stuff like this, the Ilya Mirochnik course on NMA is a good place to start.

The Russian Academic Style is very much based on construction. The form is constructed first, and then light and shadow applied later. Most other places teach it lopsided where they teach shapes first and then apply light to create the form.

If you want a good foundation though, before even touching that stuff. Do Dynamic Sketching through CGMA.
