start limiting your palettes to just two or three pigments and you'll be surprised how many nice combinations you can come up with out of necessity. it's a neat exercise for practicing color composition.

It's not ugly, it's just soulless and boring as hell looking. Low contrast is part of it, but I can't quite put my finger on the rest. Just something about it looks sterilized, like it was drawn by a computer and not a person. As for good game art, even though I have no faith at all in the game or company itself, the Diablo 4 artwork has been cool as hell.

Nothing about it is ugly. It's excellent on the technical level. It just lacks character and comes off as derivative. Purposely so.

It's the art equivalent of a solid period drama you go see at the movies. It gets good reviews and breaks off nice at the box office when it comes out, but you completely forget it exists by the end of the year.

In 2020 we have the worst of "countercurrent" art aka shit stains on canvases for money laundering and political virtue signaling, people getting rated high for nepotism, etc. and at the same time we have the worst of old school Academicism where all that matters for an artist is how good and fast and efficient he is at rendering commercially viable things in a more or less realistic way.
You can't really say anything against these artists because it's a bit like criticizing Bougureau, yeah it's shit, it's generic, it's kitsch, but it's really well made. That's what matters, companies want this, they don't want an artist that is 0.5% less proficient but says anything innovative or interesting or different. They'd rather have someone who's 10/10 skilled and has 0 idea. All these people probably got into art because they wanted to make splash epic splash screen for League of Legends rather than because of an inner need to express themselves. And the only spaces for people who want to reject this are all taken by politics, so you will literally never have interesting artists doing interesting things. It's all technically well made garbage and badly made garbage. We will never have another Schiele, we will never have another Kandinsky, no more Wayne Barlowes and Gigers, because all that matters now is technical execution and if you think the art is shit you are objectively wrong because it's well rendered and licked all over so it's perfect.
