The amount of variety in the different types of work that could be considered "professional illustration" is massive. You'll have to be more specific about what you want to do.

Ignore the rest of these fags and read the sticky even though it hasn't aged to well but it still gives you the basic gist of things, try experimenting with drafting pencils then learn from some art courses on youtube if the books if it's too complicated, also I'd recommend you keep drawing even though it sucks when you make mistakes since every mistake is progress towards a milestone achievement and let's you finally have fun with a pencil

A pack of No.2 pencils. 4 erasers. And about 4 empty sketchbooks.
Then buy a monthly subscription to NMA and select a course (with feedback) for absolute beginners. No advanced topics like anatomy or oil painting. Just basic courses on how to see objects in the real world, measure them by eye and translate them into 2D.
Then buy materials for the course you select.
That, plus instructor feedback should put you about 5 years ahead of most people on /ic/.

Oh, and buy a dog.

i had the same situation happen to me a while back (graduation money lol)
what i did was go to hobby lobby since they have constant 50% sales, bought a few multiple media sketchbooks and watercolor sketchbooks, and bought a nuetral grey tint winsor and newton watercolor tube. nuetral grey can make black, and its very nice. practice value studies with those, as well as mess around with them with illustrations. much much much cheaper than buying those shitty grey copic markers, and they do essentially the same thing you just have to wait between layers.

also if you have enough, buy an online course like proko or ctrl + paint.

also if you go with the watercolors, get some paintbrushes and a handheld WATERCOLOR palette, a wooden one will just soak up the watercolors, dont get it. get something plastic
