Oil takes a different skillset. You've gotta get used to how traditional pigments and mediums interact, like working with transparent vs opaque colors, how paint flows with medium vs solvent. Your drawing skill should stay intact, it's just learning a new process.

Lotta old style painters will do an underpainting in monotone, usually burnt sienna and white, then glaze colors on top of that once they have everything drawn in place and the values blocked in. Working directly in color can lead to more vibrant paintings, but also muddy tones if you're just starting out.

What process are you trying that's not working for you?

Always payment upfront and never deliver the image until it's completed it has been fully paid. The reason is simple. Despite what commissioners might want you to believe, anyone with a brain should see that the artist bears the load of the risk here. If anything goes wrong, the time you spent on it is not coming back. Value your time. If you work with paypal the commissioner can open a dispute if anything is not to their liking, and paypal will more often than not side with the client rather than with you.
If for some reason you do porn then forget it. Full upfront, no questions. The reason here is that whether you keep your money or not is completely on the clients good intentions eitehr way, because if for some reason they decide to dispute the money after you delivered the work then you're just fucked. You can't defend that you did the work because you're drawing porn, which means you're breaking paypal TOS and you'll never see that money back no mater what you do.

tl;dr, payment upfront, or at the very least 50/50 fuck thumbnails or whatever nosense. Just don't show anything until you get money.

I'll be the boring cunt and say start with Loomis Successful Drawing.

What I wish someone had told me when I started learning is basically you're teaching your brain to draw in 3D, like a video game or 3D movie. You're teaching your brain to understand how 3D objects with their own shapes/surfaces react in a 3D environment with a 3D light source from whatever angle that reacts to those 3D objects in that 3D space. That is basically how light interacts with different shapes. Those are two big fundamentals, line drawings and values(light/shadow) Have a look Zbrush for example which is very similar to how you should be thinking about the shapes in your head and how light hits/interacts with them.

Ontop add shading and colour/saturation which can be learned at the same time if you wish, I did that by color picking my favourite movie stills or paintings and studying the differences across each picture and trying to replicate it and understand it.
Use subject matter that interests you, don't just copy the examples in the book because that's how you keep it interesting, draw the stuff you like and have the discipline to learn the proper foundations of your drawing/painting such as understanding REALLY how 3D shapes exist and how light flows on each different angled surface, then you can focus on how color and saturation fall on top.
Start with Loomis if you like and then practice them by studying your favorite ideas/subjects or topics and keep studying/copying and replicating and making your own pieces from they learned knowledge non-stop, there is no end, but check your progress against your favourite artists to see if you compare and move accordingly if that's what you want, otherwise just have fun and and fuck everything. They said the comment was too long so ending it here and can't be fucked.

Many will argue differently but I'll state what I think it boils down to but not limited to. Illustrator is more for graphic design, it's a vector based drawing program (meaning you have to draw with the lines and shapes they give you, it's not free hand or like drawing with your own hand and shapes, think drawing with the shape tools in ms paint but a little more dynamic and more. ) and photoshop and other similar programs are closer to actual drawing and painting because they are like drawing/painting onto virtual paper but obviously not exactly the same.

I used to now I don't give a shit as much anymore and am not obsessed with doing it as a job as after some xp I realised I wouldn't enjoy having to do work I'm not interested in to pay rent, I'd rather do what I like and have that freedom but obvs that's a personal choice, do whatevers best for you. Literally watch any professional artist do a sketch and they all do some form of what the /ic/ retards would call """""chicken scratching""""". >> No.4754226

Professional artists will also practice forms and lines before going into a final, that's one of the reasons you do studies. Or they do "chicken scratch" lightly, and then make the final line over it, and erase the lighter marks. Digitally, you just do a separate layer.
But developing line confidence is always a good thing, nobody expects perfection.

>> No.4754337

It can mean a number of things, for me it usually means that you're not happy with your skill level and thus are unhappy with what you're drawing, it can also be a sign of perfectionism and impatience that you're not as good as you want to be yet.
The fix would usually be to take a break and think about what you are unhappy with about the drawing, is it the perspective or anatomy, is it the lighting or the color or all of them? Then once you have your answer go and study how to fix them each by studying something you like. Maybe sometimes it's just your idea is boring to you now which happens too, and maybe it's true that the idea wasn't actually that good so move on.
It's normal to get frustrated but don't don't let it eat you up, understand that nothing is perfect and never will be but you need to keep improving is most important. Try and change your perspective on it about 'the journey to improve and discover' (sounds lame I know but there's some truth there) and most importantly you should be enjoying it and having fun, that's why you started right? But there will be moments when you're pissed off and that's fine but if it all starts to become a drag due to your frustration then maybe consider some of the fixes I've said. It's usually a sign that either somethings wrong with your drawing or your expectations or both. Learn the fundamentals through studying subjects you enjoy.

To add sometimes its good to change your drawing, but if you're learning sometimes it's also important to stick to a piece to the end and finish , then you have a full piece to look at and see where you need improvement, plus that dopamine rush of finishing your work helps. It's all about judgment, you know what's the best course of action to take usually by examining your work and listening to your gut, writing it down helps too.

Now he charges $170 per character and his slots still fill within minutes. He could easily charge double that and still get his slots filled IMO, however being from southeast asia the dollar goes a long way there.

A lot of the more popular artists do commercial work which pays to the tune of $2000+ per piece. Once you start getting those jobs it doesn't make sense to charge anything less than $300-500 for smaller/faster private commissions.

If I'm right, and he does want you to construct heads from other shapes, this exercise wont make much sense unless you understand basic 1-point, 2-point and 3-point perspective.
Not even kidding.
You'll have to imagine the sphere as a cube being rotated in space, and apply that logic to constructing the blob faces. I'd draw it out for you, but I have no tablet atm.

You're overthinking it. When you blend two colors of paint, a chemical reaction doesn't happen that changes the paint. Both colors will have the same colorfast properties. Best case average the two. (spoiler, lightfast ratings are not guarantees.)

It's not referenced because it's something that doesn't matter, and doesn't need explaining. You're overthinking it. If you have that much anxiety over it, store your paintings in boxes and don't expose them to light over time.

Not sure where you've read that but I've never seen anyone recommend starting with gesture drawing.

Gesture drawing is an application of your anatomy and figure drawing skills. Doing gesture without that knowledge would be a waste of your time and effort.

Start with perspective, then anatomy, then figure drawing and gesture.

There's no official name I've ever heard - not everything has a name, it was just the style of the art they were choosing. I've been told by old school publishers that getting the brightest, most saturated colors was the goal, so you'd be noticed on the shelf. Sci Fi back then didn't get much advertising in the mainstream - if you go to used bookstores the sci fi/fantasy section is more saturated color than the kid's section at times. Things started getting more subtley in the 80's, but guys like Michael Whelan was using really saturated colors for his skies and composition still, for that reason. He said as much a couple of times in interviews - that's what the publishers wanted.
Plus, what looks more alien than oversaturated colors?

I have similar followers on instagram/twitter and I get way more reach and sales through twitter than instagram. Instagram might have been really good years ago but now its ridiculously hard to gain followers/reach unless you're already big. They basically force you to run ads if you want exposure outside of your existing follow base. If you're looking for commissions go the twitter route, its way better for artists than instagram.
