Bery nice, but I think you should further separate the subject from the background in terms of values, perhaps make the mantis a bit darker overall or introduce a cast shadow which would make its butt stand out more, making the silhouette clearer while also adding more visual interest to the piece. Something like that.
Speaking of butt, you've got a tangent with the tree there.

Really neat! The mantis doesn't really seem grounded on the leaf. Make sure to include the ambient occlusion between the lil feet and the leaf.

>>4736483
Very nice. I think the leg and the inside of the mouth are kinda hard to read at a glance, those areas may need more contrast. Making the external contours a little (or a lot) thicker might also help the silhouette stand out.

Read Alla Prima and Color And Light, and use trad paint, something like oil or gouache.

If you start relying on grayscale-to-color processes there's gonna be a depth of things you'll miss out on, and imo renderings made that way usually like a bit of vibrance.

Literally just learn to paint, it'll teach you so much about color.

Thanks for the input. I was trying to keep my values as light as possible to get that bright look. Now I can see how the readability suffers because of that. Also, can't unsee that tangent now. I already posted this picture online but I'll keep the advice in mind for next time.

>>4736483
I agree with the other anon. The leg is hard to read with that foreshortening. The inside of the mouth could be shaded which would bring more contrast to the focal point. The shadow attracts too much attention in comparison.

>>4736761
Quite nicely drawn! I like the subtle rimlight on the face. It could have more hue shifts, and a stronger difference in temperature between light and shadows. The anatomy seems accurate from what I can tell. Although the skin has too much of a rocky texture for my taste but I assume that was intentional given the body type. Quite impressive overall.

>>4736784
I really like the rendering, composition and all. I think it mostly suffers from the poor quality of the photograph you took. You need a good scanner and some value adjustments in photoshop if you don't want to loose the quality of the original.

Which isn't to say I dont like it; I do! I think your marksmanship is actually pretty good and the snout and fur look really three dimensional. But if your goal is making furry porn (which is what I assume you mean by furryshit) I think the style might be too close to actual animals to really appeal to furries.
But idk, maybe furries are into that.

fuck it would've been an easy fix. in the source picture she's angled so the width of her shoulders are foreshortened but I see that I made the corner of her shoulder too sharp so she just looks malnourished. I know it's the hardest but try to organise your rendering process so every step is applied to the whole picture before going for the next step.

I like your colors a lot, clearly something you're good at. I also quite like some of your brushstrokes, but having them everywhere makes it look somewhat muddy and unfinished. When refining this, blend out soft edges for form shadows, but keep harder edges for cast shadows and to maintain some expressive brushmarks - backgrounds are more forgiving for this than faces.

A few thoughts on things you could improve before refining it:
It looks like you weren't very confident when working on the legs. The position of the feet is awkward. Feet usually point slightly outwards, not in the exact same direction as the knees, so the foot closer to the viewer should point more towards us. Don't be afraid to use references for parts of the figure you struggle with. Gripping the spear this far up and holding it so close to the body feels kind of cramped and unnatural.
Composition-wise, decide if you want to have the figure in the center or more to the side, right now he's lightly off-center which doesn't look as good.

>> No.4744182

>>4744162
thanks a lot, I’ll try reworking the legs and the spear before rendering it.

You’re right, I still need to work a lot more on composition, I have a bad habit of figures and heads dead center in a composition And I’ve been trying to move past it, but I guess I have to be more decisive about it.

might i ask how you use mediums with your oils?

ive seen the method of having each layer of paint have less and less oils as to not crack while drawing but regarding painting wet on wet like it looks like you do im confused to how i should dillute/use medium

mind giving me a tl:dr of how you paint?

>> No.4745505

>>4745447
I work kind of Alla Prima or wet on wet as you say. I use liquin as my medium so you don’t have to be as careful as something that yellows as much as other mediums, but for something like oleo gel which I’ve tried in the past, you wanted to stay below 1/3 oleo gel to be paint. Liquin is used by a lot of artists because it is like a gel but glides the more you play with it. Also it resists yellowing a lot better. It also speeds the drying time, so if you wanted to work in layers you could wait as short as 8 hours depending on which color. I also use my solvent (gamsol), to thin paint when I want a kind or translucent effect like on the cloak.

if you dont mind another question, do you pre-mix your paints to already have the exact tones you will use or you mix the colors as you go

>> No.4745564

I mix paint on my palette before placing it on the canvas. I try to make sure I have the right color and value on my brush before placing it on the canvas, but at my current level, I often place the wrong color and need to scrape or rub it off and try again. I mix new colors as I need them, if I need to gradate or hue shift.

The one big suggestion would be knowing anatomy at a decently comprehensive level. You've got good form and I can tell that you're studying Hogarth, but you're missing the triceps and a lot of the back muscles.

Thank you for the feedback, anon. I actually have a pretty good understanding of anatomy, my problem with this is that his anatomy, his shapes are so different of everything that i've studied, that i'm having provlems assimilating his lessons and laying the muscles where they should be.
The biggest differences i've noticed in his anatomy frmo the stuff i learned is the much more visible ribcage on the body and the gluteus medius that is way more proeminent.
I'll keep your advice in mind and try to lay thge muscles in their spots.

You seem to overestimate the space between the pelvis and rib cage on most of your gestures when in reality it is quite narrow. That and I think you make the upper part of the body to long compared to the legs when it should be roughly the same size or even shorter for aesthetic purposes. Proportions might not be the most important part of a gesture but if you make these mistakes most of the time then you should be mindful about it. Otherwise the gestures look good to me.

Your background is lackluster, and honestly reduces the quality of the drawing. And the posing of the girl on the forefront is awkward. Like you didn’t know what to do with her so you just slapped her there.
Other two girls are weird too because they are talking at no one but it seems like they’re supposed to be talking to each other. Make the brunette look at her. The camera is poorly drawn too. As well as the anatomy.
Otherwise you’ve got obvious growing skill. But but you have major flaws.

Remember that shadows are tools to define form. You don't just lay a flat black layer on it and call it a day. You "wrap" it around the form, which gives it the illusion of depth. Flat shadows are inherently blocky and harsh so more stylization is sometimes better. Cute piece btw

Her eyes look tired due to the line under it. Her lips are flat and dull. She has no blush or color to her cheeks. Her eyes have no reflective light.Where the fuck are her pupils? Is she dead? If you can't draw a scene to completion, don't try to paint it.

Also, this is mostly personal preference, but the sharp edges everywhere and hard-round blended strokes is a very ugly way of painting.

You don't have to use a texture brush, but try using a brush tip with a unique tip pattern with some of the shape dynamics adjusted so everything doesn't look so uniform. For edges, look at traditional art like oil paintings and charcoal drawings. Also practice painting on one layer.
