I think I need to replace my good old CTL 480. A couple of weeks ago, a giant air bubble appeared under the surface. Rubbing it with my finger tips solves the problem temporarily.
What should I get instead. I'm between an Intuos Medium PTH660 or the Wacom One. Thing is, I'm not completely sold on the Wacom One just yet, Can afford Cintiqs atm btw. What do you guys think?

Decide where the light source is.
Then just hatch with a really fine pen for like two hours. Use a ruler for the longer lines if you're not confident, the lines need to be fairly straight or it'll look like a mess.
Apply screentone.
Scrape sceentone.

it is a selection layer on CSP see img. It is essentially like a retreivable lasso selection. How to use it:
>create a selection with a lasso
>press 'Convert to Selection Layer' (this creates the green layer)
>if you have this green layer selected in the layers pallete, you can retrieve the lasso selection at any time using 'Convert Selection Layer to Selection'
>you can draw/erase on the layer to add/remove selection area, like a layer mask. soft edges also work here

In this case, its only used as a 'reference' selection to create the layer mask which is active on the folder. It's not used effectively here, but I've tried to integrate it into the workflow as good practice.

Better use of this feature is if you frequently deselect and reselect different regions on an illustration, you can ensure that your selections are the same each time by saving it, instead of lassoing freehand with error. For example (not done in the img), you could save selections around the cleavage or the hips to create consistent hard edges- this can be useful esp when working on a flattened image, but it's not needed here since I used clipping masks on silhouettes already with hard/soft edges.

Is it possible for someone who draws like 2 hours a day to ever reach the level of a manga artist who isn’t known for amazing art? Like yugioh for example doesn’t look impressive but is even that level unattainable unless you’re drawing 8 hours a day?

>> No.4727934

>>4727925
Yugioh's art is actually wonderful.
But probably, yeah. The biggest thing with mangaka is they're very fast. A lot of the "manga style" is just cutting corners because they need to draw 20 pages in under 7 days. The quality of each individual drawing isn't typically super impressive (or you can really tell when it is), but what is impressive is that they just draw so much so quickly.

I bought two medium sketchbooks totalling 440 pages and pens to use. I'm wondering where i should set my goal to finish filling both of them with random things over time. I'm normally a digital artist and wanna just go back to trying to learn traditional. Most of my time still needs to go to digital but I wonder if I can keep this up and maybe learn new good habits

There's no right or wrong answer here. They're made for drawing, so draw in them. Time frames, goals, that's all up to you.
I get that when you don't have a lot of money, things like notebooks are precious, but it's just paper. They're for using up. How you do it is your journey.
I don't get attached to notebooks, or filling them, but that's me. If you place a lot of importance to them, then do what you think is best for you. If you don't know what's best for you, try it. See if it is. Don't overthink it. This is classic can't see the forest for the trees - don't get hung up on things like this.

Yeah true. I'll just draw in it when I can. I've been drawing every single day digitally for over a year now, but the thought of not learning trad has been bugging me. Traditional will always hold some beauty digital has a very hard time capturing, this is noticeable to me with manga sometimes. Anyway good insight, was just thinking about this so that I'm keeping to my goals and dreams at a steady pace. Maybe I'll post another stupid question when this book fills

I was trained in traditional, and transitioned to digital. Yeah, i'm old. I still do traditional - for me. It's worth pursuing, simply for the pure pleasure of it - and some things are just easier to pencil out. I always do thumbnails for digital, and them scan them in. I think better on paper - and I think a lot of people do. I think there's a certain immediacy to pencil and paper than there is to a monitor. Or intimacy. Something.

> when did you have to take the routine pill? is it the answer?

Yes, it is definitely the answer. Here's the two things that worked for me that aren't super autistic bullshit. You will be planning a week ahead (more about that later).

1. Goals. Figure out two goals (remember the golden rule: specific and measurable). One of the goals is your daily goal (e.g. draw for two hours). The other goal is your weekly goal (e.g. by the end of the week I will have completed a 4-page comic).

2. Timing. Prepare a simple schedule. You don't have to plan your meals or anything like that. You'll need: (a) when you're going to wake up and go to sleep; (b) when you'll start drawing and when you'll stop (see below); (c) what you'll be drawing or studying etc (e.g. 30 mins live figure drawing warmup, 90 mins working on comic page start to finish).

That's it. Now some notes.

Plan a week ahead. On Sunday take about an hour to plan the coming week. Don't just do it day to day or you'll fuck it up. But also don't plan for longer than a week (other than maybe having an overarching goal).

Always adjust the schedule at the end of the week, never in the middle of it. If you can't make it, take note of why you couldn't make it and adjust at the end of the week. But always always always try to stick to your schedule.

Always plan when you'll start and when you'll stop drawing. Having a set STOP time is important as it will keep you from noodling around and wasting time. If you couldn't make the "deadline" take note of why you couldn't and adjust for it at the end of the week. If you want to continue drawing after that, you can, but TAKE NOTE FIRST.

That's all it takes. It works.

I think that what might help you anon is re-evaluating some expectations a bit, and putting more focus on what you truly care about, if you really just want to create something.
Perhaps, it's very important for you that this something is viewed by someone else. Right?
If so, I think that you should seek to talk with other people that do art, if you're not doing so already, and try sharing your work with them instead of just blindingly posting it somewhere and waiting for people to come around.
You gotta call more attention to your work.
But about your specific question, I think putting that energy towards working on the next piece and analyzing why you might not be getting attention could help you not feel defeated. As this might likely not be your fault, but simple that nobody has really noticed your stuff due to the sheer number of things posted all the time.

I can't deny the satisfaction of creation.

>>4730083
as i said above.
I'm really happy and proud of the drawing.
But getting ignored is just sad.
And getting shit on is sad as well.

I too wish i could find people at the same level as me so we can push each others to keep drawing.

I don't want to actively seek attentions when my drawing is not good.

The thoughts of knowing that I'm gonna get ignored and negative feedback again is enough to demotivate me from drawing the next piece.
I think i'm gonna take a break from drawing.
I will probably go grind the 250 boxes challenge thing.
Because there's nothing to feel about it.
It's just a chore to do, and i won't feel defeated because i'm not putting in my heart and passion into drawing bunch of boxes.
And it's some good practices to grind.

There will basically be an entire "village" or "pack" of t-rex, so they'd probably be all the same colors unless I want to speculate that males and females looked different. The main character is a mother t-rex, so I suppose I should focus on her and reflect her colors on the rest of the pack.

She is a very simple character; just a kind, mothering t-rex thrust into a terrifying world after the meteor strikes. So she has to figure out how to keep her kid safe. Anyway, I want the audience to root for her entirely. Sorry for rambling.

Anon, don't beat yourself up. Where did you post? If you posted on public social media, it's extremely difficult to get noticed on there. You're posting at the same time as millions of others across the world, especially right now when most people are at home (and school's out).
Depending on the platform (like Twitter) a lot of people don't set their timelines to "Recent posts" only "Hottest posts" or whatever
Don't forget that social media uses their users as the "product" and they don't give a fuck about you, they want ad dollars.
If you posted on a private account to just your friends and family, the algorithms are still fucky and they might not see it for 2-3 days, so don't stress.
This is why social media management is a full time job people have to train for, because these companies are geared for business not for personal users who just want to share their thoughts and posts

I'd say its because taking a break from drawing means you also forget any subconscious bad habits. And when you restart, you're likely more conscious of your every stroke- so you will probably notice bad habits where they reappear.

Like drawing eyes a certain way, or drawing the same body proportions each time, or drawing the same pose over and over. If you confront these as you spot them with fresh eyes and hands, then it makes up (or more) for your long break.

also after long breaks, I'd suggest selfcriting your last drawings before starting anew- you could be on the verge of a breakthrough, esp if you've been observing nature or other people's art as >>4731659 said.

I don't know what artists are you talking about but 99% of them use rulers for straight lines and ellipses templates for ellipses even when they are inking.

It's true that some artists do everything freehand, but that's a very specific style (It's something more common in French comics).

Also, while getting the perspective right is more important than how you draw the single lines, doing everything freehand you can fuck up the perspective really easily.

My advice: do the pencils right using rulers, then try to ink them freehand, and see how it looks. If you ink traditionally there are tricks to have more organic lines: use the edge of a sheet of heavy paper as a ruler, use dip pens, ink on textured paper.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-shot_(comics)
Start with a simple premise (x characters in y setting doing z), decide an end and beginning point then how they go from start to end, design some characters and add whatever fluff you need/want then storyboard 20-50 pages of this. It's good exercise for all the skills a comic artist/writer will need.

Also ask yourself: WHY do you want to make a comic? Like, literally why? Did you have an idea you wanted to turn into something with your art skills? If so, then just keep doing that idea until it's refined and polished. If not, then focus on the reason you want to make a comic and refine it.

You're getting confused. Color can be tringulated with 3 parameters, and the names for some of them are more or less interchangeable.
- Hue (the spectral color it is closest to)
- Saturation/chroma/intensity (the amount of color, or in other words the distance from a neutral/grey)
- Value/brightness/lightness (how much light is present, or in other words the distance from black)
The third parameter can be reliably found with the method mentioned.

If you find it simpler, you can just use the RGB sliders to triangulate a color, as it amounts to the same thing.

You don't really ghost them, but you can do construction on a separate layer, and then adjust the opacity as needed and eventually turn them off.
I usually just paint over them, so I don't even bother turning them off most of the time.

Is anyone else having issue with pressure sensitivity on Photoshop? I just bought a new display tablet and it works well. But any time I try drawing on Photoshop it creates the thickest line any time I put even the tiniest amount of pressure on the screen. CSP hasn't given me this issue so I know it isn't just my tablet.

what do you mean?

like you want to draw a cat running:
a) look for reference a cat running and copy that
b) look for general cat anatomy reference and draw the pose you want from imagination
c) just draw a cat with the knowledge you have

I would say c > b > a

c is the ideal but realistically you will only be able to do it with very few subjects. b is fine it still gives you lots of freedom and don't slow you down that much.
a is the worse, very slow, very limited. but it still necessary in some cases.

its not that cut and dry, it is more of a spectrum but still

For me, I learned how to write and I just draw comics now. I recommend Robert McKee. Learning to write also just increases your creativity in general, forcing you to come up with one idea after another for what happens. You get used to coming up with lots of ideas and lower your "filter"

generally it means you're probably drawing from your fingers or wrist, if you want clean lines it's easiest to draw from your shoulder or elbow; lock your wrist and fingers in position and move your elbow and/or shoulder to make the line

give this a watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAtmiQgW6As

if you're already doing this then what you need next is practice, and for that i would suggest trying to trace long consistant lines, even say take a piece of lined paper and try tracing the lines on the page, as for curves, draw three dots and while controlling your arm speed draw a curve that goes through all three dots

I hope that helps, keep up the work anon and you'll make it!

Lot of people will spout rules like CSI, straight vs curve, etc, but there really aren't any hard or fast rules. The best thing you can do is copy other artist's whose style you admire, and replicate it in your own work. Copy from many different artists to make your own style.

Make a scribble or splash of color and see what you can see in it.
Another exercise you could do is to make a word web. Think of something you are interested in, then find words that relate to that, the words that relate to those words and so on.
You can also try to make pieces by process of exclusion, ie "my pieces tend to have this, this and this in them so how can I make something with none off those?".

If you can't come up with any more creative ideas through these processes, you may just need to expose yourself to more creative media to get your brain in the right mode.

I think those exercises are mostly useless. Anything that makes you hate your hobby is going to be completely counter to your goals. It shouldn't feel like an awful, terrible grind. It will require a lot of hard work to get there, sure -- and there's no shortcut for that -- but you don't have to read Loomis or sit at a community college and draw overweight feminists. Unless, of course, that's the skill you want to acquire. In which case you probably enjoy those activities and won't feel overwhelmed with boredom. But if you just want to make, say, environments, then you are absolutely wasting your time. Even if you want to populate that world with tiny humans, then you *still* don't need to become good at figure drawing. You're not doing courtroom sketches.

No and it performs like shit. Adobe just keeps taking away useful features and putting in bloatware that makes it lag out or act fucking weird. It's a bitch to cancel the free trial / subscription, too. If you're really dead set on trying it out I seriously recommend using a gift card with a low balance so they don't just keep charging your credit/debit card should you cancel it. Once they start charging monthly you're locked into a contract with a cancellation fee. Customer support is a joke.

It's a survivorship bias or something. Ask a successful artist what you can do to "make it" and they're obviously going to give you canned advice. "Do more fundamentals." They're not saying what *they* did, they're telling you what *you* should do. And, to their credit, you did ask for advice. What do you expect them to say? "Well, I copied and stole everything I've ever created. I pretty much have faked my way up to this point. I can't believe people are actually listening to me. I'm extremely lazy -- you might even call me a one-trick pony -- and I can't draw half the things inside the Loomis book." Because that's what's really going on.

It's more that I think that fundies should be acquired *while* working instead of it being homework that you do separately.

Create a concrete goal and then grind what you need to reach it. If there's a lot of humans in the scene, then do some figure drawing until you find the right pose. But once you've got that particular pose working, you do not need to keep grinding needlessly.
