What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

teaching myself inking. using CSPEX on an iPad Pro. i’m not paying attention to lighting when spotting blacks. just trying to make it look like it was inked. i don't know what i’m doing and have very little resources. wanted to go into comics but i have an addiction to doing pinups. if you’re thinking about getting a cintiq or an ipad pro, i can create a canvas of almost any size and depth and export it without losing my settings. with CSPEX, not only can you work in vector and raster, but you can animate. i’m using the 12.9” ipad pro and usually working with a 35” canvas at 300dpi and experience zero lag. this isnt procreate which however has its own pros.

i’m trying to create my own comic, but considering producing it like a manga if you’re familiar with how that is done. i think it would be easier on me since i tend to be on the slower side of drawing.

CSP has resources that I can use to create my comic so I’m checking out what is available.
i like being able to do this all in one app and within ipadOS. it’s cheaper than a cintiq and although CSP is by subscription only, it works better with the iPad Pro than EX does with my Surface Pro.

anyway, if anyone would like to critique my pin-ups, anything i’m doing wrong or could be doing better, I’d appreciate it! i know it would be more suitable to post sequentials, but i’m still a novice inker and my sketches can be messy and wont necessarily reflect the final product.

my goal as of now is to learn how to ink or if possible, to fake it like i’ve done in the example pin-ups. so, any critiques would be helpful.

Looks fine but the biggest issue for me is it doesn't look like latex. You really should pay attention to lighting. It doesn't have to be realistic but just make the light appear to come from one direction instead of all over the place so you can make the light reflections highlight the form instead of appearing patchy like it does now. Good poses and lines

I don't care if they don't critique me, but they don't critique anyone, not even each other. It's a drain on the community imo, the system only works if people contribute. People in chart threads on /mu/ get called out for lazy posting because everyone knows that the thread only works when posters actually participate (people new to the hobby get a pass when asking for recs since they have no experience, much like /beg/s here). Posting your work and just saying "finished" is awkward as fuck, AT LEAST talk about your OWN piece of work, let us know what you were going for, what you had trouble with, etc. so that we have an easier time of critiquing you. This isn't twitter, you don't have to maintain a minimalist aesthetic to your posts.

Honest answer : I try to critique or give advices based on my experiences / knowledge in various threads.
Most of the time there's absolutely no answer or just your average beg saying pyw or stupid shit.
When people ask for advice, it's supposed to generate a conversation. Even if people don't agree with you then you can have a debate. I genuinely love helping out if I can, but on /ic/ it's never been a fullfilling experience so far.

The colors is the main thing that jumped out at me. To have a very saturated green in the image you have to desaturate and reds in the image and vice versa. Having colors on the opposite sides of the color when be simultaneously saturated only works for certain bold artstyles and only if they know their color theory. 2 things I would consider here - in your second picture the balance of the squat is slightly off, making your pose look a little less grounded than it could be, almost like your character’s floating. 2nd thing is your wrists feel kinda undefined and tubular? If that’s a stylistic choice then fine but I would brush up on hand and wrist anatomy. I’m not the best on cloth folds myself but what I would do in this case, especially for the first picture, is do the pose yourself and observe the folds your clothes make. Use what you’ve noticed to inform how you fold and wrinkle cloth in poses similar to the one you’ve taken.

different anon, but if you are going for a top view, the bottom halves of the legs are working against you. Confession about the side on redraw - my first attempt at an isometric angle was embarrassingly bad. Something I’d recommend is find a reference at the same angle, or failing that, maybe even use a poser like Design Doll. Keep in mind that the latter option will only help you figure out how to pose the body and place the limbs, it won’t help with cloth or skin folds so I’d definitely prefer finding a photo reference to work with.

These are really nice! I like how flowy the hair looks and you did a good job with the perspective in the first pose. Just to nitpick, some things I noticed you might wanna fix - your line weight feels a little all over the place. I'm guessing you're trying to show value and shadows with lineweight but the way you've done it can make your pictures less readable at a glance. When there's forms overlapping in the picture, I like to vary lineweight a little bit just to differentiate between them. If you're more focused on painting/coloring you might not need to worry about this.
The other thing I noticed is your faces are just a little bit off. I think you're drawing her eyes almost at a flatter angle than her head is and it makes them look a little closer together than they should be. Anyways my edit’s probably not the best but I hope it gets the idea across, and both these issues are still pretty minor. You have a blog?

Different anon here, I think your advice on line weight is.... wonky. The first guy was using line weight to imply a light source. I agree that his line weight is kind of all over the place, but to remedy that I would suggest capitalizing on the idea of using it to suggest lighting and being bolder with that. Your method seems even more random and nonsensical, with thicker lines being used for things that do not fit with (what seems to be) the original intent, which creates even more confused line weight.

noted. doing this amount of rendering on top of my sketches recently is pushing me me out of my comfort zone. but I guess i need to go further.
I dont generally draw porn/lewds. so it's all guess work for me there. i generally like to do very cartoony drawings.

pushing is good and you could spend more time rendering, but you can benefit from just thinking more. on the goblin with the blue glowy shit: i know that you know better not to put that yellow highlight there- that's guesswork, or an afterthought gimmick. either way ruins the temperature of the image (cool light/warm shadows etc). if you let basic shit like this slip, I can only imagine how much you're not actually thinking when you're drawing or rendering.

your shape language/design is cliche (big sword woman), and the texture is the same everywhere with the braindead hatching, circles and dots all over (on the hair, orange, fur, skin). you like to do cartoony drawings yet its evident you're not capable of caricature or exaggeration- is this just an excuse for being so deep in comfort zone? I ask about your inspirers because there is no mood or substance in your drawings. But at least you're having fun and getting clout right?

Ok mb I didn't make it clear
>hatch in a way that reflects actual materials/textures, you study this. use reference. 'rendering in pen and ink' book could be useful for you
>think more when drawing, avoid subconscious habits, apply what you learn from studies, form, color, temperature, rendering principles (terminator, reflected light, occlusion etc- look at the fucking orange)
>copy/study shape design and caricature/gesture of your inspirers, then invent your own
>anyone's first idea of something is always a fucking cliche, get away from this by making more iterations of the same thing, improve it with each iteration and exaggerate your own vision. use reference
this one is the biggest offender, but I can't tell you how to improve a dull artistic vision since it's subjective- only to expose yourself to better art that you like and your inspirers. this one is on matters of your own creative motivation/purpose, and what defines you as an artist.
