I used to paint a lot before I stopped drawing for a few years. When I started again, I avoided painting and worked on lineart with flat colours instead because it was a hatred of painting that made me stop drawing in the first place and I still never really got over that. I feel like I can get colours and values accurate if I spend a lot of time on a piece, but I would like to learn how to better get down the right colours from the start. It feels like my tools are actively working against me and I can't get my brushes to do what I want.

I would do what I've been doing and just practice by painting more, but I am not sure how to get past this hatred of it to make it feel like I am not forcing myself to paint whenever I try to practice. I'd appreciate any advice. I'll post my work in a bit.

more recent painting example. I feel like my lines didn't mesh well and I got to the point where it was too painful to keep working on it so I left it like this

also did this and it's like the only other example of painting from recently. The rest of it looked really bad but I seem to have lost the file

the hatred comes when you think or you have made errors and thus failed
therefore u must change your mindset to why your painting, right now your painting to make good paintings which is incorrect you should paint because you enjoy the process more than the result, which is tricky there is no magic way for it to happen
not to say this mindset will make your paintings worsen in skill nononon its very weird but they ironically get better because your strokes have confidence, the confidence of not caring if you fail, u just let your 'soul' out

Also try imprimatura, grisaille and/or verdaccio for values. It should be easily reproducible on a digital painting software. I also heard about Scott Roberton's rendering book but I've never looked into it.
