I would like it if Shinji's face wasn't excessively detailed. Gives him a weird South East Asian look, while looking uncanny valley animu. Looking at his nose and mouth that might've been intentional though. Otherwise I really like this piece.

He wasn't even trying to draw anime, he was just trying to keep shinji's face in his own style. The real problem here is the materials rendering. It doesn't even look like plastic, metal, or latex or anything. Plus the speculars are way off and are just painted in random shapes that don't follow the form.

Normally I'd agree with you, but I think the over detailing works in its favor this time. It really helps the mech have a worn-metal vibe. What really kills it is how shiny he made Shinji. Pretty much pushes the entire image past the line of too much.

That being said, I'm viewing the image from a fairly large resolution. The rendering does become too much if you're not zoomed fairly close to the image.

Other than shinji's face what bothers me the most is the poses. Like what is that pose hes doing supposed to be? It looks like something a life drawing model or reference pack would do but really odd to pull normally. Its like hes purposefully striking a pose in a photoshoot..
The evas pose is alright i guess although the bent wrist holding the knife feels kind of limp and not ready for action. If the wrist was straight it would feel more alert and ready for action
