I have realized I have a very middle-of-the road amount of talent.
I used to think as a kid I had talent but around 13 in art class I realized I am pretty mediocre and placed about the same as the other "art kids" at the time. Now as an adult I have many friends who want to be artists or claim to "do art" but can only draw sketchy pics with bad anatomy that are nowhere near professional or anything and I am better than them at art, but I think they just haven't applied themselves or dedicated nearly as much time to it as I have.
I have worked hard at my art for years and honestly I think someone with more talent would have surpassed me by now but I am at least good enough that normal people are really impressed seeing it.
It will probably take several more years for me to get to an actual professional level even though I draw for a few hours every day and that's just kind of the way it is.

When I made my first beg post and one anon said get out of beg. I'll never forget that. Since then, a year ago, I have regressed though. Got depressed and got worse due to not practicing everyday.

>> No.4707886

I don’t study art much, I have never practised anything, I just draw what I like yet I improve massively with every piece excluding random doodles and such. Also, I don’t even draw everyday, I make a full dedicated piece maybe like 5 to 6 times a year, rest are just silly doodles.

So I guess I am talented, but barely anyone knows I do good art and I don’t intend to sell anything, so I guess it’s a waste

Honestly what the fuck are you saying.
"self portrait" refers to a portrait of an artist by the artist, not just of the speaker by the speaker.

How is there any confusion/ambiguity in "Durer drew a self portrait at 13"

>he actually thinks that people don't advance at different rates with the same effort

A lack of talent won't stop you if you're determined, but you're naive if you think that some people don't have aptitudes for certain things and learn them faster.

>> No.4711801

>>4711560

It's Durer's self portrait. it's still a fucking self portrait, Durer took a portrait of himself. He was both the artist and the subject.

Now that you've learned this simple lesson, tomorrow's lesson is object permanence. If you close your eyes, things do not in fact disappear. Be sure to tune in.

I do wonder about the nature of talent sometimes, especially when I see the work of masters like Durer. I think anyone can learn how to draw and get to a decent level of technical skill through years of practice but the stuff these guys were doing at such a young age is insane. I guess part of it comes down to them being enrolled in ateliers and being mentored by master artists from a very young age, something that is quite rare now a days but I feel like there's a spark in them and you either have it or you don't. I was reading up on Egon Schiele the other day and I didn't realize that he was so young when he painted his masterpieces. He was only 22 when he painted pic related and died before he was 30 years old. A lot of people these days don't even start seriously drawing until their late teens to early 20s and he was already a master by that time.

Taking that as painting as an example, I feel like most people could paint it given enough training and time. Artists even had assistants do their work sometimes. Most of the value comes from the design

Even extremely talented people don't just pick up the pen and with 0 practice draw a perfect professional picture people would buy prints of.
Even the most talented people had *some* degree of practice, it's just that they improved at an exponentially higher rate than most people.

I used to lurk /ic/ regularly, and "draw/paint" in my mind rather than on paper/computer and this is probably the best thing I've made... this was done when I only drew like 10 times, when I was in high school (about 7 years ago, I have not drawn/painted since..
