I think we need a thread to help those who are wondering if it's "too late to start" drawing
Post your art and your age and how long you've been drawing

It's too late if you have no more passion and SOUL left.
I'm not posting my work, because I haven't done anything in five days. :(

Been drawing on-and-off since age 12 though.

That's okay. I'll start then

I'm 22, almost 23. I've been drawing more seriously since January of last year. I did try drawing while in highschool but I quit soon after when I was working a wagie job. I think quitting and coming back to try again taught me a valuable lesson

The lesson was that I should put in the effort now if I want to become good at drawing, and looking back on the time that I chose to give up hurts a lot, so I won't be making that mistake again by quitting. Each day is worth a lot if you want it to be

not the anon you are replying to. i dont know how other people do it, but when i study anime faces and heads, i spend a ton of time thinking about all the different proportions and try to understand what looks good to me and what doesnt and why. i see a lot of artists who draw absolutely gorgeous anime eyes, eyelashes, very well polished, but i think their eye, nose, mouth etc placement look incorrect.

i might spend 20 minutes drawing a floating anime head, then spend an hour resizing and moving around different facial elements, adjusting jawlines, and so on. in my humble shitty beg opinion, proportion, placement, angle of facial features is my number one priority. i can grind out the polishing parts, eg anime eyelash tutorials, later.

>i might spend 20 minutes drawing a floating anime head, then spend an hour resizing and moving around different facial elements, adjusting jawlines, and so
literally me and I hate it, I try plotting out the actual eyeballs and pupils too which kinda helps when I do it. I draw faces but not good faces. Gotta practice practice practice

>> No.4702802

>>4702794
Faces are very important for humans. We evolved to have a very sophisticated appreciation/recognition for facial features and even slight angle differences can make a world of difference in to our brains. Its one of those things that you just have to grind through, but pretty much everyone can make attractive faces if they try hard enough.

You just have to train the facial recognition part of your brain to not be input only, but train it to be output as well.

Thank you, and totally agreed on the effort part. To take it a step further, I've found that drawing a ton helps, but even more important to my gains has been improving my observation skills. To be honest, I don't even draw that much, but my observational skill and ability to critically look at my own art and others has improved noticeably since I started.

Drawing from life has obviously helped my improvement. That can't be ignored.

Another important thing is looking at lots of other people's art. I can't understate how helpful watching art process videos from pro artists has been in building my own approach to drawing.

Really fucks me off when I see young 20somethings boohooing about "being too late". Fucking retards. I'm nearing 30 and I dropped drawing for almost a decade before picking it back up this month. I'm still plucking away at it, who knows where it'll take me. it's definitely harder as you get older because you have to juggle your job and relationships on top of art. so I say do it if you enjoy doing it. and even if you don't enjoy it all the time, but you inevitably keep coming back to it it's still worth doing

thanks yo. Yeah, my progress isn't even that fast, I've been busy with my career + social obligations + trying to start a business as well. Everyone has an hour a day to devote to art.

Here's a tip for all the burgeoning artists out there: If you spend an hour a day watching tutorials but don't draw, your art skill will still improve compared to you not watching any videos or doing any drawing whatsoever. So you don't have to "just draw" to improve. But you have to draw eventually, so you might as well be consistent about it.

Nice progress. What practice routines did you start with (how often/which exercises)
Any books you'd recommend to someone starting out?

>> No.4704918

>>4704894
My advice for low tier begs, if you are asking for it, is to focus less on academic study and focus more on making drawing a daily integral part of your routine/life. Do what mobile games do. When you play a typical grindy mobile game for the first time, what happens? You get a bunch of free stuff, freemium currency, that kind of thing. They frontload you with a bunch of "speed up" items in the hopes you blow through them and start buying more "crystals" or whatever.

They do this because it plays into human psychology. They frontload those things and also offer perks and rewards for playing the app/game daily. It's a twofold process. So the most important advice in my mind to someone "starting out" is not to name you a book to read or a video lecture series to follow, but to find something you can do within in the realm of art and drawing that is rewarding to you to build that positive association with art. Because drawing is a very time consuming hobby, you will need to invest 1000-2000 hours before you will be able to make art around an intermediate level.

For me, my first attempts at are were I traced anime heads and did step by step "how to draw anime" youtube tutorials for maybe like the first 3 weeks of my art journey. Videos like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W234SZTGtY

I'm not telling you this is the best, most optimal, most efficient way to learn. But I think many /int/ artists give /int/ level advice. By the time you reach /int/ level, your ability to sit down and study dry material is more developed. It's easier to tolerate. At a beginner level, I think dry academic study is a lot more taxing and you run the risk of burnout. There's no reason your first few weeks of learning to draw should be something dry like gesture or perspective. Make it fun. You're in it for the long haul.
t. mid /beg/

>> No.4705026

>>4704918
That's an interesting way of thinking about it. I'll see how much of that I can apply to myself.
Unfortunately I think I'll still have to do at least some dry study stuff to keep me motivated. I've recently noticed that when I try to get into a new hobby I really like to use the excuse of "This isn't the most efficient way of learning this, I'm wasting my time" and just quit.
Obviously that's not a very rational and I'm trying hard to fight this attitude, but the mind can be a weird place sometimes.

I’m 40 and I’ve been drawing for 18 months or so? I used to draw a lot as a kid but stopped shortly after starting college to focus on becoming an accountant. So 18 months + 12 years? As I coast into my midlife crisis is realize that was a mistake as I really fucking hate life as an auditor.
So it’s never too late, I suppose. But don’t start drawing after 10 pm. You need your sleep.

This is wrong for beginners though, since I already had knowledge of the human anatomy from reading medical textbooks as a kid so if you’re just beginning gotta nail down the musculoskeletal system first.
The most important thing is to always push yourself out of your comfort zone and always do your best to make your next drawing better than the last.

Fucking cute anon. I think it's best when you really love it as hobby and gain the skill just by trying. I love drawing right now but I only get upset with it sometimes because of my lack of fundamentals. If I could churn out full body sketches characters posed how I want them to be, I could do it non-stop. I'm sure I'll get there one day
Seeing mangaka get published at such an early age also makes me kinda jelly since I would love to do art for a living which is obviously a hard thing to do. Hiro mashima got published at 22 which is insane, Oda was young too and plenty of others so I tend to get jelly and sob but it's alright

>>4700998
It's too late because we're in the year 2020 and all forms of human expression are completely dead. You should only make art if you enjoy the mechanical act of drawing and nothing else. If you aspire at communicating something you're in for a world of pain.
On the bright side, learning one of the 4 art styles that work with people isn't hard, since you don't have to do any soul searching, it's just about learning the basics and making copies of the top artist's Overwatch fanart. Monkey see, monkey do. You'll get there, just don't become a tutorial groupie and draw at least a few hours a day. Doesn't matter if you are 10 or 30 as long as you really are in love with the trash that people gobble up today and you feel happy drawing it.
The hard part has always been finding your place in things, thanks to social media that's pretty easy too if you look at people like numbers and you're completely ruthless as long as you achieve success.
If what you have to reply to this is "this is not true, I tried it all and it didn't work" then you really just didn't like it enough. You have to be fully compliant. There's no "I'd rather do it this way" or "I don't like doing it this way". You have to be a bugman. If you are a bugman you will find work. This burns but it's really how it is, this is a job, it's about getting things done, it's not about your feelings or yourself. You have to do everything that needs to be done. I think the majority of people who try and fail, fail because of this. Those who don't try, just didn't try. If you tried and failed, this is your problem. You're not compliant enough.

Sorry I'm not posting work on 4chan especially since these posts are inflammatory.
You probably won't see any work here because people on this board who ask themselves questions about this issue are all beginners who still think they can find success with personal work so they delude themselves that getting to a good technical level is all they need. The only people who touch on this subject publicly are art gurus, who ironically exclusively touch about technical skills when it comes to art. Have you noticed that? At best there's stuff about "style" but there is no discussion at all about what you actually have to say.
I have no idea why people wail so much about technical skill when we have all the resources in the world to get there. You have to make studies and learn value and color, digital takes 80% of the hard work off your back so you don't need shit like "talent" to be a top bugman I assure you. You just have to work, have a plan, and stop fucking around with videogames. The real issue and the only issue is if things like painting with your own voice or saying something different come into the picture. In that case, good luck. If you want to be an anime porn artist and you fail it's 100% because you are lazy.

>my lack of fundamentals.
This is the hardest part that everyone must go through so hang in there.
My best advice here is divide your drawing time into parts, and keep 2 main objectives.
Dedicate some of your days in the week to do studies, and the other days for free draw.
Do a chunk of studies then relax yourselves with free draw days to refresh. Keep your studies consistent too, if you are self teaching I recommend that you stick to one objective first then add in one or two more half a year in.

For example, if you're committing yourself to study anatomy. Then you'll set yourself 1-3 months of doing that, starting from figure fundies to gesture, to humanization then to muscle studies. After that you can at least gain enough intuition, you'll start on another objective on the side. It could be coloring, perspective, etc.
As for your free draw days, you should try to mimic art from other artist that you like. BUT try not to copy it exactly, apply your studies when you copy them. Be conscious of what you copy until it become second nature. The point is that you're still learning passively, letting your brain adjust and apply itself without relying on a guide book. This is how you also develop style too, so you should try to imitate your favorite artist and combine them to your own.

I too dream of becoming a mangaka or comic artist in this, and I havent given up hope, just taking it more realistically this time. You too should try your best. You have a story you eagerly want to tell through your manga, so don't bottle it. Best wishes to you anon.

I know I'm young but my biggest regret is the fact that it took me this long to even start; I've actually wanted to draw for a LONG time but I just put it off because I was scared that I wouldn't actually do it, and waste money on a tablet that I would use for like one or two weeks and then leave it to rot. I've been comparing my art to a lot of Art Progress videos on Youtube, and even though I didn't practice as much as I know I could have, I feel like I progressed pretty well.

My pic on the left looks like what someone between the ages of 8-9 would be drawing, while my pic on the right looks like an average 12-13 year old's level.

A jump of ~3-4 years in the span of approx. 1 year is pretty good.

The "highschool years" will take a bit longer, but I can probably reach a 15-16 y/o's level by next year.

I'm currently in my mid 20's btw.

Been drawing since 13. High intermediate level. My commissions only go for about 150/ fullbody tho. Don't think I will ever break past intermediate. I've been here for 5 years.

What you drew wasn't bad, Anon. Foreskin is a complex organ and not a lot of artists do a good job of it. Japanese surely do, but its hard to study their work because of stupid censorship

Keep going, or when you're 25 you'll regret not having tried all those years ago. Start now. Do a little every day, and a lot on some days.

You're probably gonna feel discouraged hearing this but I started programming when I was 11 (so 22 years now? Goddamn).

If you read the right learning materials (which some have been linked here, and frankly there are tons of great coding resources online) and are diligent with your programming practices, you can become capable of a 6 figure job in about 2 years. This is if you study & program for 2-4 hours a day diligently. You *will* become good enough to work in inudstry

>> No.4707511

Anon please... I'm trying to learn programming but nothing makes sense and I think I might have a learning disability. Can you point me to some resources? I started with python because someone said it was easy. Did I pick a bad starting point?

I don't know. I'm not the kind of person that thinks keeping track of time is important, but I guess at least one or two hours a day.

I think the point at which a person can start doing commissions and whether a person is able to garner enough patrons to fuel the artists lifestyle is most important.

>> No.4707585

>>4707574
to you it is. Many other people exploit an artists unpopularity as an excuse to pay lets say, instead of 80 dollars, 20 or 30. Popularity matters a lot and both of them contribute to price. If one is missing then an artist wont make nearly as much money

Being able to do commissions doesn’t mean much. You can sell ten dollar commissions with beginner level work and say that youre good enough to do comms
Asking if people are able to support themselves through art alone here is pointless and not interesting

Is it me or are kids now a day got into digital art so easily? I've seen so many 14 years old being fluent with the tablet and I'm here in my late 20s still doing traditional.

You don’t know they’re fluent with their tablet by that picture alone. Each drawing could’ve taken them many hours

>>4706884
I think you're right. I really wasted the entire first half of the year by being lazy and barely drawing. I'm trying to change though. Since the start of july I've spent as much time drawing as I did in may and june combined. Hopefully I start making gains faster and if I don't then I guess that means I have zero talent after all.
>>4707752
Don't worry. I have no idea what I'm doing with a tablet and each of those pictures took me a while to finish.

You missed out on some money but you can still make enough to retire by the time you're 40. Which is my plan still. I wish I was better at money management earlier, I'd already be 100% financially independent and just drawing/programming for fun everyday. Which is the dream.
