Should I study paintings or study from photos when it comes to trying to understand rendering/painting landscapes and backgrounds?

>> No.4697712

>>4697699
Craig Mullins said in the Sijun Posts pdfs that photos are fine, but you MUST study from life. Colors and values are distorted in photos, and if you rarely paint from life, your paintings will look like photographs. I personally don't understand the physics behind how photographs distort color and value, but I know one factor that plays in is lens exposure. Cameras just can't see the range of light and dark that the eye can, so they blow out the lights or flatten the darks.

Dose anyone know how to rectify this? It bothers me i can't notice this shit unless flipped. I think i may actually be retarded. This is drawing with head guid-lines or just slapping some symbol-drawing semi-circle eyes on a something. Shit never lines up when flipped.

what should I watch/learn after drawabox and dynamic sketching

>> No.4697954

>>4697699
You should work from life at some point with landscapes, because the key to them is values, and with photos, you're depending on the photographer's decisions regarding value, which may or may not fit painting. Also, photos flatten depth, something you need to learn for landscape, along with lighting and atmosphere and everything else. You're also relying on the eye of the photographer for composition, and it's always better to have the freedom of choosing the vantage point and composition yourself.
Photos are fine during the learning process, but like figure drawing, at some point you need to confront the real deal.

>Why do some anons ridicule artists who post here?
A lot of people here are just looking for artists to tear down just for the sake of tearing them down. I don't think it has much to do with jealousy, it's just people who have, for one reason or another, antipathy towards other humans. Likely due to emotional problems.

Mature adults are maybe 20% of the users on this board. Art in general attracts young people, so you have lots of young people making very harsh and unkind comments because they haven't had the life experience yet to really understand how unkind it is to make those remarks. These are remarks they'll likely look back on and wince in a few years.

And even the adults here who are artists who do work, many of them are freelance and have never really had to work in a professional setting so you see skilled and talented artists act moody, unprofessional and with no collegiality.

Lastly, we have many posters from developing countries where people can be very unkind, and these people take the attitude they learn with them when they come on the internet.

That is not to say all freelance artists, all young people, all third worlders are going to make spiteful comments. But certainly the bulk of these remarks are made by the aforementioned groups.

Oh, and it's the default behavior for women, too.

>the physics behind how photographs distort color and value

Depending on how the photographer sets up his camera, the darks and lights in an image can be obscured if the value is incorrect. Ex. if a camera auto records black and white objects as fifth value but if it's incorrect, the image's highlights and shadows will be messed up. People who copy from amateur photos usually have purely greyish shadows and white highlights.

Photographers who rely on the accuracy of colors would place their objects in correct values corresponding to shutter speed and f-stop.

With contrast. All sharpening does is adjust the contrast in colors, using algorithms. The other way is harder edges. If you put a light value color next to another lighter value, the lack of contrast will soften the transition in the eye - the way to sharpen that is to either make the edge hard, or widen the contrast.

Good tip - but i wouldn't use 20% dot gain, as that would change your values on screen. He says he doesn't know what that list is, but I do, which is why I would use the generic grey profile at the very bottom, without getting into what dot gain is and pre-press specifics.
Not sure why he's working in CMYK either, but that's another rabbit hole I don't want to get into, without knowing anything about him.

yes. a good chunk of black anime and comic art is technical and deliberate in a way that doesn't feel organic imo. I think it falls into a similar trap to what makes many superhero comics feel soulless - it has a kind of self-importance, like it's trying to prove something, rather than being a joyful exploration of the visual possibilities of a setting, a story, its characters. Especially with black weeb art, it's like artists are ashamed of just drawing cute shit and they try to make it "cool" instead.

In PS there are two settings that control how transparent your brush is, Opacity and Flow (in CSP its called Brush Density)

The same stroke doubling back on it self with less than !00% FLOW , will overlap like in #1.
If theres less than 100% in OPACITY the stroke doesnt overlap, like in #2, unless you lift up the pen and make a new stroke

I dont know what the terminology for these are in Krita but the principle is the same across most programs.

So basically, if you make a stroke that is at 25% opacity if black and you layer another stroke at 25% opacity, the layered part will add up to 50% opacity of black. So when you do a simple value study. Use a separate color at 50% opacity of black when you want a gray value, not black at 50% opacity since when you layer two or more 50% opacity strokes it will just add back up to 100% opacity which causes that dirty layered look.

In short, do not rely on opacity if you want different values, just pick out a separate value.

While I can't say my autism hasn't had an impact on my ability to improve (it's certainly why just reading art guides doesn't help much) there are more obstacles that are unrelated to it. Well, Hampton learned from Vilppu. They both teach the same process. I personally like Vilppu better but Hampton simplifies a lot of the thinking process at first. Whatever you do, don't rush through those books, thinking they'll speed your progress up. If anything, they just outline a process that will set you in the right direction. Cycle through the chapters quickly and over and over again. No you don't need previous literature for it. You can stay with Keys while doing Hampton or Vilppu, but Loomis really is fucking hard.

Also keeps you pretty occupied. And from the metric fuck ton of reading about drawing i've done instead of actually drawing has told me that in order to draw actual good anime or other very stylized styles like it, you need to be able to construct the real thing if you want to get past beg level.

Drawing isnt something thats natural. Drawing is something that is entirely unique to humans and must be something that is learned.
As a result, you need to learn how to draw to a point where it becomes muscle memory and the only way to do that is practice.
Its the same way you see a soccer player kick a ball and it sails perfectly into the goal net. Through practice, they know what muscles to twitch at the right moment to get their legs to hit the ball at the right angles with the right force to move it in the right direction.
Exactly the same with drawing. You need to teach yourself the right muscles to manipulate to get your drawing implement to move at the right angles with the right pressure.

Your welcome but I only say is because its what I tell myself when I have issues drawing what I see in my head.
I know what I want to draw but my muscles don't know as of yet.
Same idea as you see with infants and their ability to flail their arms around without any order.
Its because they don't really know what synapses do what with their limbs so they are just trying anything to get results. We take it for granted because those few years in our lives were spent doing everything we can to get results and once we were capable of basic function in society we forgot how useless we can be.
Its not something you should feel embarrassed about because there is no way around it. You will need to feel helpless and start from the ground up till you get to the point where your muscle know what you are trying to do. After that you can start with the more advance concepts which require you to apply what your hands can now do for you.
