Abstract thinking e.g. long term planning, problem solving, philosophy; and drawing abstracted human features without guidelines are two completely unrelated thought processes. Really the latter is rote memorized. Which is what nips are all about, rote memorization. It's why all their live action TV shows have cutouts in the corner showing celebrities reacting. It's how their writing system is structured, around learning tens of thousands of symbols. It's their entire way of life. Which is perhaps hereditary or epigenetic in some capacity.

On a serious note, I don't see what you could possible take umbrage with in my post. Even a decade ago, it was universally accepted on places like /jp/, a clique of nipponese culture gurus, that the Japanese are a culture of rote memorization in terms of their caligraphy/writing system (retarded stroke order), honor system/culture, absurd amount of kanji, social etiquette, the list goes on..

"Social etiquette. The girls simply do what is expected of them.
Japs rote-memorize how to behave in social situations.
Ever notice how in Japanese TV shows you often have some picture-in-picture window where the reactions of more or less random people are shown? That's so the Japs know how to react to what is being shown. They need this sort of thing."

Lots of western artists say things like this. Especially on /ic/. If you ever goad them into actually drawing anime, they flounder spectacularly.

Full disclosure: I like certain styles of western art and anime style art. And I don't pretend that one is braindead, while the other is not. Both take a lot of study to draw in an appealing way

Try to draw very loosely and messy similar to Jim lee. Then when you're happy with the results go for clean lines.

Don't take the construction as fact, it is just a simple way to envision the planes of the head.
Try copying the main features of the face so that even when you mess up it is still recongizable.

Hopefully, we can all improve together. It defintely works, but it may not work well for you.

Pic related is very light and loose, then you can detail it and apply cleaner line work. This may work better for you.

Very good anon. /beg/s always attack scratchy lines for quick 15-minute anonymous artwork.

But, messy lines is actually one of the best ways to draw from imagination. DrawAbox and Proko gives begs the wrong idea here. If you look at the source, like scott HTD, you'll see that he recommends not worrying about line quality until you have the structres completed.

You can see this in action from Yosuke Murata. Worrying too much about line quality is a sure fire way to make the initial sketch boring and stiff.

When you ink it afterwards this can take a while. Since you want to think of the form being described, what to show and what not to show, and which lines to choose from. Not worth it if you're doing quick studies, as it takes too long to get good line quality.
