Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

When you're at /asg/ together make sure he knows you cannot draw anime girls.
When posting, find a picture of an anime girl, gaze at it with consternation and exclain sadly:

"I absolutely can't draw anime girls"

There is almost a 100% chance your guy will respond with "Why not? You don't like anime girls?

Be silent for a few seconds for dramatic effect and continue: "I... well" (take a pause) “Every time an anime girl is drawn badly, they suffer! Those cute little anime girls… I can’t bear to think about it! They’ll never get a chance to be on the front page of pixiv, to be rolled for in a gacha…” It is good to shiver at this point.

Your guy will gaze at you in amazement! What a kind, sensitive angelic person you are! Next he will be feeling the need to spend the time to really get to know you. He’s yours! Plans for a date are in the bag!

When you start going out with him, no doubt you will find yourselves at a similar thread where you can draw anime girls. You’ve got to know each other well enough, but of course he is going to ask. “Didn’t you say you couldn’t draw anime girls?”

It is safe enough to blow it off with a “I’m OK with it now”, or “Oh, I got used to it”, or even a “Did I say that?…tehe-pero!”

Question: I think my line art looks nicer when I enable pressure>opacity and pressure>size. But when I color the drawing, the opacity makes things look bad because the color underneath interacts with the opacity of the lines and makes it look weird and inconsistent. And when I don't use it my lines look really thick, rigid, and amatuerish, idk, I'm confused.

I notice a lot of good artists use pressure>opacity but their art still looks clean and perfect, some don't seem to use it but still looks fine. What do? I'm confused.

Are you keeping pressure size on? Also maybe try duplicating and stacking the line layer then adjust opacity just for kicks and see if it looks any better colored.

cute, the simple values work pretty well. it wouldn't hurt to tie it down a little more, there's a lot of implied appeal that could use some definition
>>4698417
it's hard to say, but copying art that you like to break down their process and figure out how they make it work could help. if you're aiming for the style in the picture you posted, they're using a very thin solid black line with no opacity. simple, clean lines look deceptively easy, but there's a lot of super subtle line thickness changes here that make the drawing work. posting your work might help too

Usually you stack up the line art layer once or twice or duplicate it and multiple because of the reason you noticed. Also put an opaque layer under your colors. Lines tend to not work that well with just opacity pressure jitter.

Your pic is unrelated and effectively black or close to it. Line art is typically not pressure opacity jittered for inking purposes but there are some styles it can work with mostly hard round, those use some flat layer underneath though so as not to be affected by opacity.

>> No.4699408

>Also put an opaque layer under your colors.
>those use some flat layer underneath though so as not to be affected by opacity.
Not quite sure what you mean by this. Wouldn't painting under a line (and over the opaque layer) cause it to interact with the line art with opacity jitter anyway?

>> No.4699427

>>4699408
post whatever you mean as an example. the flat underneath still helps the linework to not be affected as much. whatever you think is opaque may even be them painting over the line art with a soft brush to match the local color.

Hm maybe I'm too new to understand the techniques then. It looks thinner and lighter in some spots, so I assumed it's opacity jitter. So i guess you're saying it's not opacity jitter but maybe just size jitter, and they're painting over the opaque lines to give them a different effect? I see thanks, I guess drawing with opacity jitter is a different technique altogether.

ah, yeah, you got the gist of the pose down which is the important part. a lot of anime/cartoon styles are so specific with how they're drawn that even just a few misplaced lines can make it look off model. it's not very forgiving! I think doing some analytical drawings of still lives and stuff should help strengthen your eye for drawing correct angles and proportions. you've got the same lines, it's just their relationship to each other that's off

Drawing slowly is the way to go. You'll get faster as you get used to it and learn from your mistakes. It's just how it is. Don't worry about how long it's taking you and worry more about learning to construct things accurately

a page of studies like that usually takes me a little over an hour or so, and sometimes a bit longer if I'm having trouble finding good references within an episode. I do generally go for quantity over quality. though I try to get it pretty accurate to what's on the screen, I don't fuss too much over it if it's kinda janky. I'm more focussed on emulating the style and the proportions than I am on construction, so I find that pumping out a bunch of them quickly is better for developing a feel for the animator's shorthand. sorta like building an intuition for how things should look.
as a beginner I'm not sure what's best to focus on. spending time being really analytical and nailing down the construction is important for understanding. doing quick sketches to develop a style or a 'mode' for drawing is also important, since it'll inform your studies. if you're going to spend a long time on a drawing, I'd put more emphasis on getting the construction and proportions right rather than polish. if you're going to go for quantity, I would do a lot of varied studies on a consistent subject matter

I'm trying to draw lines of varying thickness for the "pen outline" of the character. The usual way to do this seems to be to use pen pressure -> thickness. Unfortunately no one gives more details past this point, they just say to use this setting.

My lines end up looking like shit because I'm not able to control the pressure properly. So the thickness is all over the place. Anyone have any more specific advice?

For example something I've tried is set it so an "average" line is 100% pressure, thinner lines are <100% pressure, and thicker lines are made up of several strokes. This approach didn't help, still looked like shit. But this is the kind of info I'm looking for.

It's not a setting that does the work for you.
Some programs have a tool where you can change line thickness by brushing over it though.
Not sure which ones. Csp maybe?

>> No.4708014

Yes it takes practice but I feel like I don't have the proper setup yet.

CSP can do that and other "tricks" with vector lines, but I'm mostly not interested because it's too laborious. I'd rather practice and get good at drawing lines.

>Yes it takes practice but I feel like I don't have the proper setup yet
It's literally just a skill you need to build up. There's no 'proper setup', some artists just ink everything with a hard round brush in PS with pressure controlling the thickness. There's no magic setup that will make you better at controlling your lines.

I'm actually doing a play-through right now (why I'm drawing Xiao, wanted to draw the two most influential catgirls from my childhood).

When I played the game as a kid I guess my disc got fucked, because it always froze midway through the Moon Sea. Could never manage to fix the disc so I never got to complete the game or experience the Demon Shaft. The game is fun, but goddamn it's a mess. You can tell it was an early-gen title and Level-5's first game. They really didn't understand the architecture or how to maximise the power of the PS2 at all.

Ruby is hot, but Witch Dancer was the real babe.

hard to say, you should plan out these sorts of things in the sketch/layout phase of the drawing, it makes big artistic decisions much less stressful. you could have one of the fronds casting like along the back, maybe one on the head obscuring the top half of the face in shadow if you want some drama. if you have a digital drawing program, you could try painting over your scan digitally to try and see what different set ups might look like

>All you need are just those kidney shaped plates and you're good to go
I'm not good to go, my art is both bad and extremely inconsistent. Problem is I understand I need to practice perspective and simplified shapes to properly convey things on space, but.
a) Even with practice my perspective is crap, I'm not expecting to be a master but I'm failing to get a basic understanding and foundation where I can work from. Things get only worse when the trunk is not going towards the same vp as the hips and even worse when adding the rest of the elements such as limbs, I don't even know how to practice perspective effectively.
b) Even if I can put a hip on a reference when deconstructing, I cannot put them properly when constructing without reference

a) Understanding perspective is a matter of experience. Take pictures, visit places. You need to build a large library of reference both mentally and physically/digitally. Nothing beats real-life experience. Of course, you'll need to read up on theory and apply them, such as point perspective rules or rule of thirds in composition. I sometimes like to take photos of figurines to test out how the composition/perspectives would roughly be like and it's invaluable to my work

b) Don't worry about drawing from memory. That comes with years of practice. Right now, your focus should be on getting your fundamentals down to build yourself up to the next step

My problem is that my perspective is shit and always wrong, don't know how to practice it properly and even when studying the theory I fail to apply it when doing attempts.
