So it's been made clear that the world doesn't need any new concept artists. The whole sphere used to be centralized on conceptart.org, but that is no longer the case and now it's seems damn near impenetrable. It got tons of people in and fact is, now those people are the only ones doing all the work. Personally, I always dreamed of a concept art job, but everything is telling me I should fucking forget it.

Realistically, is there a smart way to approach this, or is it best to start looking for something else?

Spots for fantasy concept art are taken, there is plenty of space left in concept/prop artists for things based on real life history such as ww1/ww2, aztec empire, and so on.

Just pick a subject and grind, as long as you got the fundies covered.

I think the world needs more people with critical thinking and an independent spirit. Or maybe this is the worst time to avoid appealing to identity.

AAA studios still take on juniors that arent well established. This way they can bend them into whatever they need in the studio. For indie studios You'll have to wear many hats so being very broad will land you a job.

find a programmer or learn yourself. Create some type of gacha like game on the phone where you collect thousands of characters. Now you can be a character concept artist for years and just add the images to the game

concept art doesn't mean much, theres pitchwork (art used to secure funding), theres production design work (art used to for practical problem solving i.e. a turnaround or paintover), theres deliverables (art assets used in final product, consumer facing). That's 3 different jobs that get labeled as "concept art" all the time.
