I said anatomy, not proportion.
He depicts organic shapes present in the body in great detail, and that's what gives his art the appeal it has.

I'm the exact opposite, I make decent proportions but everyone is shaped like a balloon dog, so I can appreciate his work even though it's ugly.

All the landmarks for the body are there and you can clearly see where he differentiates different bones, planes, forms, and muscle. He knows how a body should look like but he disregards it, that’s the entire fricken point of why he draws like that. If you can’t see that then you yourself haven’t learned enough anatomy. It’s fine to call it grotesque and not like it but there’s no unintentionally in his strokes or forms, it’s all very deliberate.

How is it possible that the last century had such incredible shit going on, people pushing the boundaries above and beyond. Like Schiele or not, it's people who knew how to paint who decided to freely experiment and left a unique footprint on human culture. And yet, of all this amazing shit, we decided to go with Pollock. Fucking diarrhea on a canvas Pollock and the other hacks. Why do human beings always choose the worst fucking course of action, every single time with no error?
Legitimately salty that this kind of work is basically impossible to do unless you write I'M GAY on it in capital letters thus completely devaluing your statement or you transform it into interior decor for the minimalist modern houses of millionaires.

>> No.4662713

>>4662677
Overblown, sure, but there are a lot of cultural forces (finance and the lack of reciprocal obligation to society by the powerful, a reaction to the wars and derivative effects, etc). You're in the middle of a blooming renaissance into representational art that can be very easily argued is being well-served by the abstract expressionists.

Consider appreciating lateral progress.

Delaroche said that painting was dead when he saw a daguerrotype- its reasonable to draw a historical line from there to abstract expressionism. If painting is no longer the primary form of illustrating history or narrative, what purpose does it serve? This technology created a discontinuity in the craft of visual representation and its historical arc. Moreover, if photography yields abstract expressionism, what will computers yield? Warhol engaged with (exploited?) some notion of mechanical reproduction that has some analogues to digital reproduction.

>You're in the middle of a blooming renaissance into representational art
This is not a renaissance, this is a necromancy. People are exclusively getting into realism because the world has turned into a shitty talent show and painting yet another trite impersonal academic subject with amazing skill can start your career as a tutorial peddler.
There is absolutely no real art movement going on right now, there is no progress in the ideas. The only action is political, through political channels. There are no people who are currently training academically and then using that training to do different shit. They're all completely married to a conformist path, try to say something against it and the whole army is against you
>do you hate realism? are you an abstract artist poser?

Politics is maybe a lens to look at anything through, but I don't think you can say everything is political anymore than you can say everything is feminist or fascist or degenerate.

If you want an example we can talk about Nicola Samori or Ruprecht von Kaufmann.

It sounds like you're holding onto a digitally biased perspective. Maybe its just that you've implicitly tied Value with monetary worth or social media points?

that's /ic/ and everything I've ever posted for my art is never "realistic enough" for them to accept when I do abstract work. I've never done something photographically real enough for /ic/ to think I'm allowed to move onto other things. Everyone here is insistent that anyone who thinks they've some mastery over realism and academic art is a narcissist, and that it's a lifelong struggle to be able to draw academically, when it's something you could easily learn in two years and start moving onto other things.

Pic related are two things I've down, a realist portrait in pencil and a Synthetist portrait in oils. But /ic/ will insist the drawing on the left is not NEARLY realist or academic enough to justify the painting on the right, and that I'm actually an egotistical autistic retard for even THINKING that I'm ALLOWED to paint the right image. /ic/ is the best art forum on the internet that's being squatted by pearl-clutching snob hobbyists who think their digital beginner art of Sargent is somehow saving the art world.

I'm earnestly glad to see you post here, first of all.

I agree with your point about /ic/, but it comes with the territory.

Here's the deal though, your drawing is not very good and neither is your painting. The fact that people here haven't developed the ability to critique work like yours on the basis of it's own aesthetic criteria is a result of their narrow interests.
But please, earnestly please, continue to work at it and enjoy the process. Justification doesn't even play into it.

This sh*t looks like the precursor to something like how Katsuhiro Otomo would draw Tetsuo in Akira, when he's transforming uncontrollably. Stylized realism. If he did this in the 1910's or earlier, that is seriously ahead of his time. Modern science-fiction has taken a page from this aesthetic, consciously or not.

with trad its easier to get tunnel vision because you cant easily flip your canvas around and check the thumbnail quickly and easily. this plus the "romantic" idea of becoming a painter presented in popular media as well as the constant dicksucking from normies who see you sketching leads to inflated ego.

Something about the way Schiele stylized faces really feels an entire lifetime ahead of his time. It's kind of hard to pin down, he had a very specific, sharp, geometric style that is strikingly similar to a LOT of things you see today. A random example that comes to mind is the Prince of Egypt movie. I also remember someone calling Schiele's work "proto-JoJo". It's become part of standard aesthetic vernacular, to put it another way.

He doesn't draw to make things beautiful. Beauty is just one idea to communicate, he opted for others, in his figure drawing, he focuses on communicating the softness of flesh and the rigidness of bone, plays one against the other and creates a sense of vulnerability
