Is it possible to make a career out of art without going into porn? The entrance exams to art schools where I'm from flat-out ban digital art and digital art is the only thing I do.

yes, but you need to be original, and not everyone is going to be. Porn is just a way to monetize art, making it commercial.

Yes. But you either need connections with people in the art industry so you get a job in it or your work needs be appealing enough that people on the net would be willing to pay for more of it.

Originality is the lesser, mass appeal and marketing are what makes entertainment(art) thrive. That is why porn art is so efficient, it appeals to the dick, so the appeal mark is checked, and if it is properly tagged it's also being actively marketed to the ones searching for the tag, aswell as possibly being shared around in porn groups, thus the marketing side takes little action from the artist.

You can do illustration jobs for video game studios, advertising and such. Just remember that this will imply drawing whatever meaningless bullshit people come up with.
If you do digital and you can churn put simple but technical things, environments and such, you could get a lot of work. Look into doing environment design for game dev studios, for example.

The art school trad route is a much different thing that leads to a scenario mostly dominated by contemporary conceptual artists that are just there to facilitate money laundering. There is still place for more traditional stuff, but is a much slower and less profitable thing to do.

there are more ways to monetize art than ever and yet people seem to be more helpless/clueless than ever about them, is it just extreme laziness or lack of creativity or what?

Yes, it's very difficult though. You need to find your niche, something you can draw again and again that your audience will eat up every time. Alex Schaefer comes to mind, he makes a fuckin mint just drawing banks on fire over and over again

My fear of being shit keeps me from picking the pen back up, no matter how much I want to. It's a pussy thing to say but it's so crushing mentally.

This is a problem largely found on /ic/. This board perpetuates a tunnel-vision perspective on how to make a living with art, which seems to only include
>fantasy / sci-fi illustration
>porn commissions / patreons
>concept art
>furry art
and that's it. To this board, the term 'digital art' is synonymous with a very narrow field of opportunities, when - like you said - there are many more ways to make a living as a digital artist than the above list. Are people lazy for being misinformed by /ic/? No, but this board is most definitely a whirlpool of delusional morons and misinformation when it comes to how people make a living with your art (specifically illustration). People here can't seem to fathom that any other opportunities exist outside of the above list, but there are a wide range of opportunities available that fall under the umbrella of illustration.
