I really hate coming here for advice. But at this point, I have nowhere else to go.

This is my first time coloring and working in digital. I normally work strictly traditional and black and white, but I wanted to try something different (Since I'm changing career paths).

So here I am on this picture, and I have no idea where to go next. I legit need direction. can anyone help?

That's the thing I don't even know where to start with this. Like I'm coming from a completely black and white Pencil pen and paper background. I never had someone teach me color. I don't have direction but I do have a place where I want to be: Pic Related.

Its something about the layered, not blended, style that speaks to me.

I struggled with the same thing for a long time. Look up marco bucci's 10 minutes to better painting series on youtube. His video on light and shadow help me think about deconstructing color and light into general planes, but you should watch seriously watch them all. Painting digitally is nothing like pencil to paper, try to think less about "drawing" a nose and more about "blocking in" a nose, if that makes sense. Also go to /beg, you'll find a lot of constructive criticism there.

I appreciate the input. I'll be watching a few videos today. Is there anything else you think I should look out for as well?

I ended up changing my career from Graphic design to concept artist/character designer.
I can do it really well with pencil and paper, but no one really gives a thought about black and white art when you're a concept artist.

Kienan Lafferty or KNKL on YouTube actually has some really good tutorials for starting out too. He’s a concept artist at riot games, and he’s got videos where he’ll just draw and it’s super helpful to learn some digital techniques and to listen to what he’s thinking about as he paints. My only other input is to not forget to master the basics like anatomy and composition before you tunnel vision on character design. Otherwise I hope you make it anon, I’ve been where you are and I hated not knowing where to go for some help.

Oh no, trust me I am solid on anatomy. Again I've been drawing since I was in middle school (I'm way out of middle school now). But I always go back and touch up on my anatomy when I feel my stuff start to look janky.

Again, thank you anon. I appreciate the feedback and the sources. I'll probably be taking myself over to /beg/ (You don't understand how weird it is to say that having drawn for so long) and getting more pointers there.

Not with the tablet I'm using of course.
There's this disconnect that I'm still trying to get over.

dont fall for the color meme. black and white is the GOAT.
