That's hardly impossible to recreate. My guess is this artist applied some knowledge on basic 3d rendering techniques with textured brushwork. Try using a separate layer for occlusion shadows and one for specular highlights and you'll get a result close to this.

Pic related however... I rarely see artists who can make a picture read with such a wild brushwork. Although it's clear most of it is just good fundamentals.
