what's the point of drawing
i'll draw for 2 hours today, maybe 20
but for the rest of my days i'm set to do nothing

all the fucking time
so i'll draw
ooooh woopeee i'll draw look at this cool fucking character man whew mom look i'm gonna be a concept artist or an illustrator, im gonna make coom commissions and quit my fucking job let's draw some
let's draw some big fuckin anime titties
let's trick ourselves to draw for 3 hours or 30
and see ourselves grow, oh wow i sucked donkey dick in 2015 haha look at my DA now I just suck my own dick thinking i'm getting any good
why don't we also learn to write and create new stories, 30 hours a day on top of hour drawing, and another 20 hours in the year
that's unrealistic of course, give me some tea, with a little sugar, and I should be pleased
but i'm so fucking angry man

It's like you've built it out of two planes which don't intersect correctly (if it's a copy of the ref).
There's nothing necessarily bad about that, but it's not accurate to what you're painting in this example.
Why not try a painting where you deliberately play with the idea of different planes joining and forming interesting shapes?

I really like how you incorporated the green on the beard! I think it's going in the right direction, but you should be more mindful of the values, his coat for example is way lighter than the reference. Another thing that could be improved is having a more solid drawing to start painting on, in this case, you might notice that a chunk of his head appears to be missing or just very distorted. I made the drawing Black and white so you can see the values properly, and also redrew that side of his head.

I DO think that the wing on the right of the composition is going outwards too much, even if it is a fisheye composition. I think instead of going so far to the right it would go back more. Don't worry, lad. It doesn't even work that way. Once you bounce back from the depression you'll find it's all still there. If I may suggest something: don't be afraid to use wider framing. Make the characters smaller and try to draw more of the background. If you're trying to build an atmosphere of fear and tension, it would help to show how tiny and fragile the characters are compared to those massive old trees. Cool ref by the way.

At first I liked the first one better, but when I looked at the second one I realized that the tent was the upside down laptop. I think if I were you I'd maybe make it a bit more apparent, because I looked at it a few times. The Apple symbol was what made me get that it was a laptop.
I think that the stickers on the laptop were helping, but I'm not sure what the leaves are for? If you had to choose between the leaves and the stickers, I'd maybe pick the stickers. The leaves seem a bit...useless or something?
I think the stickers kind of add to the laptop feel.
HOWEVER if you keep the stickers the Apple logo is less apparnet and it doesn't totally make sense that it would be upside down but the stickers would be rightside up.
i dunno! Sorry that probably didn't help much

pretty decent values, the way you use grays on skin is wrong though, since it makes no sense. There can be a shade of gray like this on a face, but only from a specific type of blue light, which would bee seen on everything else too. Also it's all other the place, it hits too many different types of planes at the same time, with little consistency. I personally learned how to shade different materials using 3d rendering and photoshop curves, it's actually really easy to do the basic stuff once you figure it out. a possum from ref

>>4632942
tl;Dr neat stuff- pretty colors and pops out. shadows are off, composition iffy

I really like the colors on this, anon! they harmonize really well + the warm orange/yellow of the tiger is eye catching. I'm curious, what's the inspiration for this and is it a cover of some sort? and will you be working further on this?

I like the thumbnail and first glance, but I'd say I'm not a fan of the composition. putting the moon a bit left (above the tiger) and properly rendering the tiger anatomy (body and front legs) would help imo or moving the tiger more rightwards. also the light source is a bit vague to me. it looks harshly lit from the top left but also from the front. The shadow left on the tiger should be from the poof(?) where you put the leg shadow, not the upper face of the tiger. the leg shadow should be against the ground plane. I think the poof/sphere shadow should cover the left (tiger's right) face half. I'll do a paintover if you'd like since this seems kinda rambl-y

Thanks for the crits anon. and ye I do get what you mean from your post (although if you'd be willing to do a paintover, ofc I'd appreciate that as well, but don't feel obliged or anything).

It's not a cover for anything no, just something that proceeded from imagination really (a combination of inspirations - pic related - as weird and disparate as they seem). Yeah, i'll keep working on this as I feel the need to make those changes before posting.

I've got a couple more questions:

1. What software/ brushes do you use? That possum looks great, the textures on the breast and lips are so well executed.
2. Also, I know its hard to really answer but how did you develop that brush economy as yours is that looser style I'm kind of going for but feel like I labour over my brush strokes too long so that the looseness just feels artificial iygm. Does it just come with practice or are there any particular guides you followed?
3. Social media/ blog?

howdy anon, sorry I took a day to respond. I liked the metals speculars and values a lot - great contrast in the image overall.

I think the biggest reason you struggle with brush economy is because the detail and zooming. instead of trying to draw each individual hair, fold in clothes, or highlight in metals, aim to make bold blocks of colors.

Marco Bucci does amazing videos about shapes and breaking things down. you have great shape design, but during rendering you seem bogged down by making tiny strokes. also try experimenting with different brush types other than Hard Round

I was more focused on correcting the shadows for the soldier than the tiger. When lighting things, try using a small arrow or lightbulb to indicate the light source. I also added a rim light which is a little unnecessary, but they're good for indicating form and look nice. Ive never painted a tiger, but I was more focused on shape and shadow. hopefully it comes across

1. I used procreate with the MaxPack goauche/watercolor pack and the painter pencils. I used to use exclusively PS but no more drawing tablet + iPad portability made me switch. The paintover took 3 hours, the possum took about 4. I use the lasso tool + soft/hard airbrush a lot for smooth gradients. I'll put a small tutorial in the thread

2. I used goauche like they're watercolors to train my brush economy - it really forces you to think about colors and avoiding unnecessary brush strokes. you can tell you've over worked your piece when your paper begins peeling/extreme warping.

I also like using HEAVYPAINT and MSPaint for drawing - unironically taught me colors and values since HP uses a RGB slider. On procreate I exclusively use the HSV slider. turning your canvas b&w is valuable since values are important.

3. @myegan_heckles on Instagram - I like your colors a lot and see a ton of potential in your work. you got a blog too?

the face was way better before. There was a better value structure. You are getting a bit lost here.

Any critiques on the colors i'm currently using ? This one will be rendered more realisticly later on.
Also any ideas on a simple BG would be appreciated. I still haven't really worked on the anatomy and all that so if anything else is wrong just let me know.

the flater value range helped hide you a lot.

First of all there was a bigger value difference between the hair and the face. It offered a nice contrast and stronger shape design.

The flatter value bg also helped the figure to pop.

You've put a lot of work into this and that's how you improve, through work and patience. Good job.
But here's the thing. You're trying to pull too many things at once and it's not working in your favor, the picture is a mixture of drawing mistakes, anatomy mistakes, color mistakes and brushwork mistakes, so it's hard to critique something specific.
Try stripping off the color and just drawing lots of figures like these and when you want to study painting, pick something simple that you're comfortable with, like your smartphone, a pencil sharpener or a piece of fruit.

Blender. It's the only 3d software I ever bothered to learn outside of Zbrush.

I see. Thanks for the insight.

The reason I changed it was because I'm trying to give my forms more depth. The flatter value structure doesn't appeal to me as much, but I'll try to find a better balance.

Is there a particular old master you think I should closely study for values, edges and comp?

I agree with this too. I really liked the value hierarchy in the first one and you kind of lost it with the second one. I would bring back the lights in the face, sword, clothing and lower the values a bit in the background. The way you have it now draws my eye towards the bg and I ignore the main figure. Unless that was your intention, then I would fully put the fg figure in shadow and have some ambient light lighting features. Here's a comparison without colors. The third one was what I had in mind.
