IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

(I was advised to report this question because it was put on the tail end of the last thread)

Hello. This is my first time posting on this board. I finished this drawing yesterday and was told that the neck/head were flat, mispositioned, pretty much flawed. What do you guys think? Since then I watched a tutorial on youtube by Proko and made a quick sketch of the head and tried my best to position it correctly. Does it look correct? All feedback is welcome.

I made a thread a few days ago asking for recs for art supplies. So far, I'm planning to get the Sakura fineliners and a kneaded eraser but I need some further recs for what pencils I should get. Also, what are some good sketchbooks that are inexpensive but functional. Keep in mind, I'm still a beginner and will be using these supplies and sketchbooks for learning to sketch and not for any large scale art pieces.

I'm sure all of them are of decent quality nowadays. But there are three brands that are most often used: Faber-Castell, Staedtler and Mitsubishi (in Japan).
If you are in Europe I would suggest going with Staedtler for the fine liners too. Sakuras don't provide any benefit to justify importing it from that far away.

I just want to give back to imageboards and create OC for them, have the talent for when something big happens, and not end up frustrated or sad when the OC creators disappear to forever due to me being an asshole towards them at some point and having the guilt on me.

Rhythm is the uninterrupted motion of a figure. Convey with (repeated) line. Balance are places of a figure that carry weight. These areas are also where form is most important, so convey with circles. Together, they inform motion, which is a sort of disturbed balance. This is how I understand these concepts, thoughts?

-the legs do not stick together like that, even if foreshortened
-the ear looks detached from the head
-people usually hold a phone facing their body. Try holding your phone in the same position as the drawing, uncomfortable, isn't it?
-the arm holding the phone is very close to the body, as if it were relaxed. This arm is holding onto an object, so it should not be relaxed, the muscles should be tensed, and the arm should be farther away from the body because of this.

A simple fix is just to take a pic of yourself naturally holding your phone with that kind of pose, and see what things you got wrong.

It's not a perfect reference, but since you were looking for messy short hair I figured this would be an okay starting point. If you squint your eyes you can notice the grooves between the hair are the darkest (about as dark as your eyebrows should be), but wit top of the hair clumps the lightest. This should make the top of his head look more like patches of grass.

Again it's not the best reference in the world as the face shadows aren't as pronounced as I'd hope (probable because a diffuse light was used), but hopefully it'd get the idea across. Also if anyone else knows their shit and thinks I'm giving bad advice feel free to let me know.

I've read the sticky but I don't have an answer to my question, should I start with analog or digital? I have a feeling I'm going to be using digital more in the future, but there's so many extra steps like if I want to change thickness or opacity or shading. I've been straying away from analog because I have OCD and I don't want to get graphite and eraser sheddings everywhere. What do you guys reccomend? This isn't gesture. This is a rendering. Gesture captures the flow of a pose, the energy, and the stance. It's generally quick line drawings, often just stick figures or just quick, flowing contour lines. Reclining poses are generally poor for gesture, as there's no gesture implicit in a still figure. You want a dynamic pose, where the model is moving, or is frozen mid movement.

And, the face is a complete cop out. practice capturing the basic contours of the face. You have a reference right there. (But not in a gesture drawing)

>> No.4610980

>>4610969
Forget shading, and use a smaller brush, or a larger canvas. Learn to capture contour to begin with. Think LINE. You're layering mistakes in rendering on top of mistakes in contour. Break it down, simplify.
What you're trying to do here is to far out of your ability. Go back and start over working just in line. Don't try to draw every hair, capture the form, volume and depth with line.

If you're going to crosshatch, learn to do it properly, way cleaner, and done appropriately. You're just scribbling random lines, and you haven't established any clear, accurate contour lines or edges, which is crucial for the eye and it's forms. And, eye lashes are not black blobs, they're hair - and eyebrows are hair that has a grain, they're not crosshatched lines, and they have a form and structure.
Pay more attention to what you see, capture it accurately, then worry about rendering with something as advanced as crosshatching

Random anon jumping in.
You should get the proportions right before you start rendering. The head is still on the small side. The neck should probably only receive secondary light, but you seem to be doing some sort of cel-shading, so I don't even know what you're trying to achieve there.
I think overall it's a little hard to make out the shapes because of the shading style. There's a lack of reflective light and highlight.
The colour choices are a bit strange also. Purple and red are a difficult combination, and their similar value levels make them flow into each other even more.. darker hair or lighter skin would help. Yet the vines are suddenly very dark, which makes them stand out harshly.
