How does one learn anatomy? Did you draw the muscles of the arm over and over until you can draw it from memory? How did you learn it?

I'm still learning it

reference and simplification. 2-3 flattened spheres are enough for upper and lower arm each depending on angle

Here's a tip: you can see anatomy when people are naked.

learning the names and then proceed to draw the muscles over and over again from different angles.
only works if you already did figure drawing though.

buy an anatomy for the artist book
read it. like, the words.
copy each plate, labels and all
once you finish the book you will have a better understanding and you'll have a set of references for yourself, by yourself.
that's step one

step two: draw a shitload of figures from observation.
train your eye to look at the figure and actually observe, not draw what you think you see. use your knowledge of the bones (that you have because you READ A BOOK about it) and try to see the bony points in the figure. it's like a roadmap.
draw 1000 shitty figures. try to analyze them after you're done, see what looks right and what looks wrong.
after you draw 1000 bad figures, you'll be better

once you're more comfortable when drawing from observation, then you can start to feel more comfortable exaggerating observed poses. you can start drawing from pictures and use them as references rather than copying them. this should be on year three of figure drawing i would say
at this point: congrats! you're just as good as 90% of everyone else out there. welcome to being a coomer illustrator.

I did this but I don't think its a good way to learn. You end up being able to manipulate anatomy intuitively, drawing the right things in the right places automatically, but it also makes me feel like I have a ton of gaps in my knowledge.

Don't just copy the book straight through from beginning to end. Make a dedicated study period for each part, and break down each muscle individually. I think the way the Proko anatomy course is structured is best.
