IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

Been a while since I posted anything here. Nothing special with this, just the bust of an idea for a character I have. I was told that his eyes seem too 2D, and I can't really tell if that's the case especially since it's a stylized character and all. Thoughts?

the whole thing is too flat, the style is fine if thats what you're going for but try and work on shading, why isn't the eyebrowridge casting a shadow? why isn't the nose? what about the head and jaw casting a shadow and the neck?

Work on your shading and it'll look a lot better. Also, for the eyes, try adding an pupil and some light reflecting on the eye to fix the flatness.

I just wanted to be able to post something I put some effort into here and all my actualy studies are on paper (and I have no camera or phone with one) so I went to the sticky and found this random chick.
Honestly trying to keep track of all the folds is super tiring. Especially in the shirt. Couldn't get that right; she looks like she's partially topless to me. Should have just done what you did and simplified it.

I just didn't think it'd be such a massive undertaking when I found that random pic.

Take this with a pinch of salt because /beg/ but with your girl
>Breasts should be closer, more even, and further to the other side
>Legs too far apart,
>I assume she's facing up on purpose, I don't get perspective myself
>Back is going too far out and her hips are both too big and too far to the right, should basically just cut the fat off her back and it'd be largely fine
>Speaking of important folds, I think she should have like at least one on the right side of her, since its weird how she suddenly has 0 folds at such a big section

First time posting in /beg/ and I had some questions, primarily about technique. I've been doing the practices in Right Side of the Brain (without the viewfinder stuff because I don't have that) and I definitely feel like I struggle with creating straight lines and chicken scratches, so I was wondering about how I would circumvent that. (I've always had very shaky hands, so I kind of wonder if that makes art impossible for me.)
Any other critique in general would be appreciated, primarily about symbol drawing
For what it is worth, I've been drawing for six days as of today. I'll post ref in a reply

Based and helping fellow artists pilled. GMI desu.

Im glad you pointed out the mistakes, it’s always harder to spot them in your own work since it just s reads better than from fresh eyes. I think Hogarth has a decent /int/ level book on clothing, although for /beg, Loomis should do fine. Perspective made easy was definitely good for figuring out the basics of drawing with foreshortening. For anatomy, I think gesture would actually improve the work more than the exact anatomical accuracy since it looks more fluid, but Proko, Hogarth and loomis were good resources for that

I've been using villpu for 'where this shit goes on the face', although even knowing where everything goes, actually drawing it nice is a different matter. Especially on a smaller head. Much easier if you are literally just drawing a face and the whole canvas therefore leaves ton of room for making the eyes pretty.
For anatomy, I think my next step will be anatomy for sculpturs. Posts around here make it sound like the most to-the-point, this is the anatomy that actually matters for most people who want to draw guide around.
Not a fan of loomis, his stuff all makes little sense to me.

this is a question better suited for the sticky, but I'll summarize

you're drawing what you think it should look like rather than it actually looks like. The moment you look away from the reference you are making up lines based on memory.

exercises to work on this are
>take 5 minutes on a photo, and do not look at the paper while drawing, do your best to guide your hand and pencil while not looking at them, this trains your hand eye coordination over time
>another method is try drawing the reference upside down. while drawing it upside down it makes your brain pay much more attention to the lines than it normally would, ergo you end up having a more accurate picture.

do these two things for a couple of months and you'll see substantial improvement. also read the fucking sticky.

you flip the reference upside down and draw upside down
the psychology behind it is that when you draw right side up, you recognize the image, whether it be a face, object or animal.

when you flip the image and copy it upside down, your brain has a hard time seeing the big picture, so it focuses on the small details instead.

So I just spent the last few days watching and taking notes from those Steve Huston videos on head drawing (and a tiny bit of Vilpuu), and decided I might as well attempt to draw something from reference. I wasn't concerned with making pretty non chicken scratched lines, or some beautiful fully rendered piece with hair..I just wanted to see if I could make at least a semi-accurate head. Well, I tried. It came out better than I expected, but it still wasn't good.

Anyway, I decided to scan the drawing and slap it next to the reference I found online and outline parts of the face to mark some differences. Does this seem like a solid way of finding flaws with my stuff to you guys? I saved a separate PSD file so I can turn the line layers off and on.

Also yes I've taken art classes, done live model drawing sessions before and read Fun with a Pencil. I'm just a lazy asshole who never started practicing seriously outside of class projects until recently. Thanks for reading my blog post.

The first thing that jumps out to me is that you're adding details like eyes, nostrils, the belly, all before you've blocked in the major forms. You're focusing on your contour drawing (just finished reading RSOTB?) but neglecting construction. Start by drawing the large, THREE DIMENSIONAL shapes. Go large to small. Frequently compare, look for rhythm lines to guide you, constantly flip the image. Do it a few times.

not who you replied to but I think most obvious example of symbol drawing is the lips. You drew a hard outline when there probably isn't. Though to be fair they still have some form I can see how you rounded them. Also lips don't go to the corners of the mouth generally.

Try drawing mesh guidelines on every surface. Something like picrelated. It helps me a lot to interpret 3d space. And always start with basic shapes too, unless you actually feel that you don't need them anymore. Just learning human anatomy isn't enough, you need to train your brain to do 3d rendering. That's why people start with just cubes and spheres in perspective.

Can I use /beg/ for DrawABox stuff? The reddit critique board I'm supposed to submit to seems dead, especially for beginner stuff.

Is there any worthwhile criticism I can get for these bad lines? I'm a complete beginner and working digitally on a cheap, non display tablet (which I still feel like I'm not used to). I was using my shoulder, and trying to put myself in a confident mentality, but as of right now, it feels like my hand drifts a bit downward, especially as I'm trying to draw straight lines.

Also I'm not using paper like the lessons say to because I am 100% set on digital.

Nah, don't bother with this unless that position is actually comfortable. With practice your hand will auto adjust to the rotation of the tablet.
My tablet is not held still so it tends to sometimes slightly shift as I draw. I naturally don't notice until my hand starts to feel uncomfortable because the tablet is rotated by 45 degrees or something like that.

sorry had to go for a minute. Don't use any tools to draw straight lines do it free hand. It help that you get more confident with your strokes. When you want to draw an arm for example you have a clear image in mind. Now you have to set the lines on paper and it helps when your lines are as clear and straight as your idea in mind. Second drawing accuratly should always be your goal.

I'm using a non-display graphics tablet and it doesn't have the issue you mentioned though.
The whole practice is for you to pay attention to where your line starts and where it ends.
Seems like you are able to do so on the 2 lines on top right though?

Pic is my attempt on my own non-display tablet.
I think you can take your time because It's all about the muscle memories.
