Japanese mangakas are too proud of their own head-up-the-ass system of doing things (doesn't matter, you still buy it) and realism simply reminds them too much of European art (which they find pretentious) despite the fact it's purpose is to understand reality thru artistry. The difference is western comic artists draw their anatomy from western people and japanese artists draw their anatomy from asian people, if you ask a jap artist to draw a western character then it would look closely like the chracters from the artists you quoted.
And yes there is no pure manga style, Vagabond and Girls last tour both belong in the manga category while having opposite artstyles.
