this manga is blue period; i recommend that all of you read it. the art's fantastic and the author really knows how to tug at your heartstrings. it articulates a lot of the struggles of learning how to draw at a later age when you haven't done anything all your life

>> No.4583831

Drawing from imagination is hard because you're basically opening yourself up to the world and exposing what's really going on inside your brain. It's an intimate form of sharing that art provides but for some people, myself included, the thought of other people judging this intimate exchange becomes too much so you subconsciously decide not to draw despite having the technical skill to make something.

I like drawing from imagination, but using references too simply makes everything look better. For many things you also basically have to use references. At least if you want to draw semi-realistic.

Imagination in relation to this thread is more about drawing something that you came up with yourself using your own creativity. Rather than mindlessly grinding from photo references, only drawing what's physically there, you finally draw something that means something to you. Obviously everybody uses references but it's the step before that, creatively deciding what your piece will be and what it will portray.

I can't stand it people who say "you're so talented, I could never!"- but like, I can't fault people for saying it, since it's the default, and a "nice" thing to say.
Whenever I want to compliment someone, though, I'm sure to use the word "skilled" or something like that, since it doesn't remove the work they've put in. I wish more people would think about this sort of thing.
>>4584322|
Talent isn't real, it's all about the amount of quality time you put something. You can toss a ball 1,000 times but still be shit at throwing. You gotta learn the right way to do something while you're practicing. If you've got no one to teach you, switch things up, try out new techniques. If you're mindlessly throwing the ball, you'll get nowhere.

Same with art- if you do a million Sami-level drawings, you obviously won't improve, but if you're thinking "why does this look like shit?" and actually turn your brain on, you'll get better. Some people figure this out early, do it subconciously, etc, but that doesn't make them any more "talented", it just means they were smarter than the dumbasses who kept drawing like shit over and over.

Talent is not about inability to learn, its about rate of growth. Two different people exposed to the same information and putting the same amount of work can achieve very different results. So someone might learn something in 1 year while the other would take him 10. If you add to the mix environmental factors and the fact that not everyone gets proper instruction the numbers go bigger.
>But its okay, it will only take you 100 years to learn what a talented artist learns in 10 under perfect conditions.

I think I caught the Proko, guys. A few months ago I was having trouble with composition and gesture and an anon told me to just grind out lots of drawings from reality. Eventually I felt like I started to understand how to draw from imagination but then I took a week break 1 month ago. I felt like my composition and gesture skills completely tanked and I'm back where I started except I'm much better at copying photographs. Even now I'm trying to grind out the drawings but ultimately I'm only drawing what I see and not what I imagine. Anybody know how to get out of this rut? I don't want to be a human xerox...

>> No.4584894

Just start drawing from imagination. It's not that fucking difficult. Develop a systematic approach by starting from abstract forms and refining them into organic shapes that are anatomically correct in proportion and form. I strongly suggest you look into Vilppu's videos and the Vilppu drawing manual he's able to simplify drawing form imagination for you to understand the concept between abstract forms and refining them into what we recognize as a figure with each progressing step and stage.

Let me guess, I bet you are also one of those faggots who think everybody is fully responsible for their own destiny, and that things like parental upbringing don't matter, right?

You think that way, because you are a faggot who wants the double satisfaction. Instead of admitting that some people just have way better prerequisites than others, you act as if everyone has the same chances, because you are too full of yourself to admit that it might not just be hard work which makes you more successfull than others.

To be able to draw from imagination, you have to have a good understanding of what youre looking at in real life, not just good recall.
How good is your anatomical knowledge? Do you know whats going on under the hood, so to speak?
Having a working understanding of how the machine fits together will help you immensely when constructing figures.
