Is it possible to skip grinding the fundamentals and just eyeball them? I'm reasonably confident I can tell what "looks good" without having to learn it by rote. I don't see how spending ages on them will help me in any way. What I desperately need is someone to tell me how to apply my innate ability to understand what looks good.

There’s a difference between understanding what looks good to the eye and being able to reproduce what looks good to the eye using a medium. The former can be done with observing what looks good when you or other artists draw but the latter can only be accomplished with your own practice.
