Hind leg's a little too small, unless the bear's supposed to be that long, and the leg's really that far away. Paws could be more defined, since they're kind of mixing in with the ground.

Besides that, I like the form and detail. Liking the emphasis towards the head with the bolder lines and red. I would not want to meet this fucker while hiking.

Grinding gesture and anatomy mostly. If you're good at those then clothing should be easy. Personally I find clothing far easier and more fun to study than just the figure. I did all but the top right with a 4H 2mm mechanical pencil, all shading I did was simply outlining the shadow, and hatching it with a solid tone.

Scrap it. There is no unity in this image. It looks like you photobashed random elements and painted over others. Wow way to get triggered over advice. Sorry I didn't hold your hand and Jack you off with compliments while giving you some pointers.

If you're going to act this way about crits then maybe /ic/ isn't for you.

The flow should never be shit on any page. It's just like composing an image, you need to think about where the eye is going to move around the image and make sure you lead the reader around properly. Your shit looks janky, I doubt you'd have good flow on any page you made because you don't seem to understand it. The placement of text, the direction characters are looking, the size of your panels, the composition. Everything is very closed off, your features are stiff as a board, and your composition is abysmal.

Go read the god damn books about making comics and throw in Framed Ink and some books on gesture while you're at it.

I'm trying to help you, you retarded fuck. Learn to take the good info and leave out what you don't like. I'm not even being harsh to you, this is how I talk to literally everyone IRL too. These are all on their way but need a little more to sell the design. Try adding/ showing off different materials so the eye has places to look at. Thanks dude. I kind of imagined the mask as a passive, serene face in contrast to the creature it's attached to, but since this piece was directly inspired by vague memories of the Zeiram creature from Iria, I could see it losing its serene cool under extreme circumstances, just like the "mask" in the movie did.

Yeah only if you push the pose to show movement or weight more than you see in the real pose. Also all you need to do to exaggerate the contrapposto a little is just make the angle of the hips and shoulders a little steeper. They're almost flat and I'd like to see it inclined just a little more.

I would'nt do that for random strangers, especially for an attractive girl I barely know. Plus I don't plan on becoming a commission artist. I'm already earning money from art and I'm studying scientific illustration, sometimes you just draw for fun and make a present for someone you like. Everybody is doing that sort of stuff all the time at school (she's a student in another class btw).

You're right, dont give stuff for free anytime someone asks (especially these "haaanw I love ur stuf xoxo, gib 4 free lol" cunts), but art isnt this absolute treasure that shouldnt be shared. I was drawing someone else, she said she liked it and I proposed to draw her, she seemed enthousiastic of course, so I ended up doing it to be nice, that's it.
A lot of people asks to be drawn for free, and it's a pain in the ass, but that shouldnt reduce art to its financial value, she's also an artist (graphic design) we both get it, it's implied.

Anyway, what do you think about the portrait itself?

I feel it would look much better with a sword which looked actually usable. In theory a super-chunky weapon could emphasise the weird proportions, but surfboard size swords have been so over-used that they now just look stupid. >The juxtaposition of it vs their sword is nice. It also gives me a sense of this thing having retard strength despite their size.
I think it is only really giant swords (and those horrible mallet-head 'warhammers') which have been completely ruined by bad art, so maybe try with a different weapon? A massive flanged mace, goedendag, axe, etc. could work without bringing the horrible associations with it.

Symmetrical poses can be interesting and convey power/self-confidence, but you should work on your perspective/foreshortening.
I know the arms and hands are supposed to be extended forward, but it doesn't really read that way and as a result they end up looking comically short/small instead.

This is certainly at the high-end of D&D character portraits. You've obviously put a lot of thought into how everything works and it generally seems to give good results.
Criticism:
Shirt looks good around the right elbow, but the rest doesn't hold up to that standard. I don't think you've really figured out a good form for the folds around the right armpit. You should go back and sort that out.
The quilted squares on the right shoulder aren't really working, looking more like rubber blocks or something. I think you need to find a photo reference of something quilted like that.
The half-sleeve thing hanging from the right shoulder looks like it is made from eel-skin or something weird like that. Not sure if that is intentional, given how many weird materials there are in D&D.
The lower edge of the padded doublet seems like it should interact a bit more with the strap holding his hip-pouch.
Sword hilts are usually not cylindrical. They tend to be either flattened, tapered, or both.
What's the deal with the grey cloth cuff on the left wrist? Doesn't seem to be part of the shirt and isn't found on the other wrist.
Boots look a bit screwed up in terms of their basic forms and the folds are too sharp, making them look stiff and solid. The left one is especially bad around the ankle.
The face doesn't demonstrate the mastery of forms seen on the hands and arms. Don't be afraid to have some sharp edges in there.
Hair looks like you couldn't be bothered to hammer it into a serious structure. I'd try and block it out with areas of light and shade first, then fuck about with detail later.
Hip pouch looks empty. He's holding a book. Book is not quite the right shape to fit in the pouch. Seems like a missed opportunity.
Pose is stiff and boring, classic issue with character portraits. Don't scrap the whole thing if it is a commission, but do try to bear in mind for the future that any character is better shown actually doing something or expressing some emotion.

>> No.4597581

>>4597388
Absolutely love this. Got a lot of little issues, but also some fantastic details and a powerful sense of character.
Highlights make the skin seem a little too plastic. Old people skin generally has quite a matt finish. Likewise, deep shadows are a touch too dark; old people skin is thin and has a lot of sub-surface scattering. Use some blues, greys and purples in the shadows as well as some reds.
Composition puts her eye right in the centre of the piece. I'd consider expanding the canvas so it is one-third from the top and one-third from the left, and use the extra space to add another element in the bottom right. Maybe her hand doing something? Feels like maybe holding a cigarette could work...

>> No.4597623

I don't think liquefy is gonna fix it, if i had to commit to something i would redraw the right arm to interact with the book pouch. Maybe rotate the shoulders and hips a bit.

It seems a little bit 'style over substance' but by God it's a glorious style. The same advice as always, I'm afraid; grind forms and anatomy, do more ambitious pieces, get the fundamentals of realism before going too stylised, but I think once you have done that, your confidence with colour and mark-making will really be able to produce some outstanding pieces.

Decent stuff except for everything above the knee. Simplify the lower leg forms, they’re not overtly complicated until you reach the foot, and hoof anatomy isn’t much different to human anatomy in terms of bones, you still get the ankle bone and metatarsals

>> No.4598044

>>4597957
I think the foreshortening is really good technically, but it's kinda overkill imo, it wasn't immediately clear to me what was going on, a less extreme position on the back leg would have made it more readable. However if you were to add some more detail on the hoof, or some extra hints in the inking or coloring, it could probably be still fine and readable without having to change the pose.
The anatomy is really good, love the torso.
You might get it to look even more dynamic by making the ears and hair move according to the rotation, like slightly curling around the body.

For the horse specifically. The pose you chose is very awkward. The horse's torso is almost facing us (almost profile on your ref) and the hind legs pose make them look a bit flimsy. The head is also looking down (more than the ref) which makes the horse looks meek.

The front and hind legs are almost parallel and not very meaty. All and all makes the horse doesn't give the impression you want it to give.

Right ear is not in the correct perspective from the looks of it - it should taper off much further down (unless they both continue higher, but even then the left ear would have to be much longer for it to be in perspective). Also his nostrils are basically non- existent and his septum is so wide that it has reduced his nostrils to slits.
What I like - linework is generally pretty good and I see you're challenging yourself with the angle. Think it will look good if you fix these problems.
>>4598362

I didn't like the colours at all so I changed them - None of the colours complemented each other. The red robe clashed with the hot pink skin and the purple/blue trim of the robe. not to mention all the colours are really saturated and this made this dissonance really pronounced unfortunately.

Next, the values - if you look at the sleeves of her robe you'll see there's almost no difference in value between the pink and red - this makes it really flat and is one of the most glaring problems with the piece. This is really a problem with the whole piece - the lack of value makes it look flat. In order to fix this in the future - play around with the the value curves in whatever program you use (it's all I did to fix this - essentially just making the curve "steeper"). Once the midtones were fixed, it meant I could bump up areas of highlight like the lights on the head and metal on the neck-brace and a few other areas.

Finally, I fixed the face - lots of symbol drawing and flat features again.

Apart from all that the rendering is clean (if only a little too airbrushed) and texture is done well for the most part. I actually REALLY like the background - the whole thing gives me cenobite vibes if that's what you were going for? Also the hand are look very accurate which is good.

There's a lot of good stuff in this image, but the end result is kind of disturbing. The shapes which make up the face are obviously well defined but the odd mix of stylised proportions and fairly realistic shading is hitting an 'uncanny valley' for me.

The gap in the teeth looks weird. When I look at it, I see either a black tooth, or that the lower teeth are as thin as paper. I think you need to push the upper surface of the teeth below back a few pixels into the hole to give a sense of depth.
Hair is still weird. Not a fan of the braid at all, especially not the way it does under the eye and eyebrow.
I think either some ruins or intact medieval-style buildings (maybe castle battlements) would work well for the background. I'd suggest keeping everything fairly square and blocky to emphasise the perspective and contrast with the bold curves of the foreground.

I can see what you're saying about the colors and values on the robe. I struggled with rendering the robe, and with experience I would have probably made stronger color and value choices early on.

I'm not overly fond of the warm color scheme you've got going on though. It kind of undermines the cold, off-putting effect I was aiming for.

I completely agree with the changes to the face, particularly the eyes, though.

For the background I worked a lot looser and rougher, which may have avoided that hyper-polished look.

>the whole thing gives me cenobite vibes

Yeah, I was going for a kind of sci-fi hedonist thing, less on the ritual self-mutilation side and more using some kind of nerve/electrode technology to hyper-stimulate the senses. I tried to avoid going for the obvious "gimp suit" route; wanted something more "regal" but still conveying that debased quality.

This gives me some 1970's acid-casualty book-cover vibes, but unfortunately not in a good way. The concept, design and details are all pretty nice and the colour scheme works well for the baroque vibe you have going on, but sadly the extremely conservative composition and simple lack of skill leave the piece feeling awkward. Window and wallpaper are too obviously created with a completely different method to the figure. Columns make be a bit uncertain if they were painted or rendered with some 3D software or something, which is an indication you did it well whichever it was. The character is the main problem. Parts of the clothing look OK (the fold of cloth on the inner left elbow, for example, is good) and the face at least has that retro-vibe, but overall almost everything is bad. All the surfaces have the same matte finish. Shadows don't make sense. Forms in general are not well defined. But most notable is the stiff pose, which makes it obvious you are afraid to try drawing shapes in three dimensions. I think you need to grind a lot of boxes and cylinders, get confident in perspective and experiment with more interesting poses.

Cloth looks excellent, right hand is OK but not up to the same standard, love the hat with the lost line and little strands of whatever that is, hair and face let the whole thing down. Forms there are just sloppily defined and shadows don't seem consistent with the rest. Rough style feels like it is being used to hide flaws; I recommend trying to make everything cleaner and clearer while you build up your skills. It makes errors more apparent, which means you improve faster.

The skill displayed here suggests you shouldn't be pissing about with boring portraits of a single character doing nothing. You have managed to define the complex forms of the human face in a confident series of marks while keeping an elegant style. Push yourself to apply those skills to stuff you are less confident with. seems like it or close but a bit messy. Try layering shapes ontop of eachother much like 3d objects to create form from shape.
Try to focus on only nice, clean shapes (theres a lot of jaggies this, the idea is to make 1 good readable shape or mix of shapes instead of just squiggling)
It's a good exercise to do silhouettes first. It lets you paint without losing a lot of the dynamic (or even enhance it depending on how you go at it with brushwork)
You could also limit yourself to 30/20/10/5 brush strokes and see how close you can get to the image

Hi everyone. I am trying to learn the color zones of the face but I’m struggling. I saw a yt tutorial on the subject with a male as an example, but I feel like it’s a completely different deal for females (maybe because of makeup?) and specifically in the jaw part I can’t find the right blueish/greyish color to make them feel alive, to make them pop. Here in the example you can see it feels pretty fake, and atm I don’t know what am I doing wrong. Do you have any advice? Even on things other than color zones, any advice is welcome. Thanks

It still looks like a WIP to me, but hey, that means it's not finished and you can still do a lot to save this piece.

It looks like you're shading everything with black/a darker value of the same color. Use cooler or warmer tones for the shading instead and your piece will look a lot more alive and less muddy.
Also clean up your edges and push your values more, there are som areas where different parts of architecture blend together. On the other hand, don't shade parts that are meant to be white (bandages, clouds, etc) so heavily, it makes them look grey/dirty.

I’m kinda bored with the composition and lighting so I’ll just start on something else. Thanks for the tips, temperature shifts are my current struggle

Just getting into doing head studies. Having a hard time placing features and what parts of any given feature to really give subject person life.

The biggest problem I see is this. You need to define where your your horizon line is.

Perspective Made Easy by Norling goes over the basics of perspective in an easy to understand way. You can find it in the sticky.

The short is: all parallel lines should converge on the same spot - a vanishing point, and all vanishing points should be located on the horizon line.

only if these parallels is parallel to the {ground} plane

You're just restating what I said: all parallel lines converge on the same spot, and that spot sits on a horizon line.

There's obviously more complexities and subtleties to perspective, but you can clearly see what anon is attempting in their pic, and what amount of theoretical minutia they'd be amenable to.

I see that. It's okay. Make a habit of putting down a horizon line at the beginning while sketching. It will indicate eye level, and help you figure out what things you're looking up at and down on.

Thanks for the input tho, I actually started having vanishing points established but rendered over my drawing and decided I’d just rush and finish so I could work on something else. There were too many things I didn’t like to go and correct.

gesture drawing
feels like it's a bit stiff. biting down on the lip protrudes the chin a bit more yet it has the weird anime symbol-drawn slope, construct the face with the same construction lines you used in the body after nailing the gesture.
