It's because people have shit taste and the ones who produce it never aim for any quality but for cheap and lazy production and branding to get the easy fanbux.
I bet, if you were to design casual clothes based off videogames, who won't look cringe af irl, they'd cost you an arm or a leg just for the name alone.
Also, you would start to stand out and normies don't like that because it makes them feel insecure.

This. I've thought about this myself too. People just have shit taste. If you are going to design clothes based off videogames, it has to be done in a non-cringe and subtle way. I bet there's money to be made there.

OR, it's more like, the clothes make sense within the continuity of the world they were derived from and when you pull them out of that setting and bring them into the real world, it lcan look stupid because real life doesn't always make sense with the established aesthetic.

It's gotta be this >>4566413 imo. My friend has a really nicely made Starlord movie version jacket, real leather, but it just doesn't mesh with other real clothes. It just stands out in some kind of weirdly obvious way. When he wears it at cons it's fine but when we go out to get food or something it just stands out against the regular clothes of the crowd like a skyscraper.
I still think you're right in a way though. People are definitely afraid of standing out too much and get real aggro quick if they think someone's trying to stand out on purpose. I guess they think it makes them look cowardly or something and they get insecure like you said.

Oh shit it's gone.
They pretty much just said the character's clothes are designed to match the overall design aesthetic of the game they're from so when taken out of that context they just don't look right. It made sense to me. Like it would look really weird if you imported Ryu into Bendy and the Ink Machine without changing his design to match the look of the game. It'd be clear that he doesn't belong. A lot of what makes these clothing designs work is being surrounded by supporting aesthetics designed to emphasize and enhance the way they look. Sometimes that includes the idealized bodies so some stuff just would never look good on a real person.

>>4566396
>it has to be done in a non-cringe and subtle
Yes, clothes must look decent or why do you think all the weird clothes from fashion shows never see the streets? There is a need for refined taste.
The problem lies with licensing. If you were to do clothing based off videogames, of course, the ones that made the games will want a piece of that. And if you aren't honest about your "inspiration", prepare to get sued.
And you can probably never do it independently and however you want because companies will want to corner that market for themselves.
What you can do is make original clothing that has the same videogame feel.
But people won't buy it because there is no name attached.

What about websites like redbubble.com? have you looked into that? say that you have a design idea for a t-shirt that's based on Batman (for example). Yeah, but with redbubble you just put artwork on an existing piece of regular clothing.
You're not designing any clothes, you're just printing stuff on them.
>Is there a way to upload your design and sell shirts?
Yeah, that's what redbubble is for.
I've used it and even sold one t-shirt.
>I have no problem giving the owners of the IP a cut
On pure artwork, it depends on how the artwork was made. As long as it doesn't use that IP original assets and/or isn't a blatant copy of that IPs work, you're clear and can't get shit on for selling it.
>I just don't know how you even set this up.
It's pretty easy. Just make a profile and you'll get the hang of it.
Just remember to upload hi-res pieces. The bigger, the better you can put them on stuff.

All in all, redbubble is alright but i don't think it's used a lot anymore. Don't take my word for it, though. Try it yourself.

>> No.4566540

>>4566487
Thank you for your response. What I meant is if there's an easy way to upload designs that are clearly related to some IP (Disney, Marvel, whatever) and have the owner of the IP receive a cut. For example:

https://www.redbubble.com/es/i/camiseta/Ok-Man-Icon-de-biankars/46827598.NL9AC.XYZ
https://www.redbubble.com/es/i/camiseta/Hombre-murci%C3%A9lago-de-rachidbarigo/47856768.IZGJF

These people have uploaded stuff that they don't own. The first item is a straight ripoff from a manga panel, so he doesn't own anything (character or design), and the second one might have been drawn by the uploader, so he might own the design, but not the character (Batman).

Can they do that legally, or do they need an agreement with the owners? And if you need permission, how do you get that. That's what I don't know.

>Yeah, but with redbubble you just put artwork on an existing piece of regular clothing.
>You're not designing any clothes, you're just printing stuff on them.
Right but if you want to design the clothes completely, how would you do that. It seems a bit risky to manufacture things yourself, no? Feels like a big move

Honestly this seems like the kind of thing that Todd McFarlane did with toys. He saw that toys sucked and started a company that made toys that were just better, and people bought them even though they were more expensive. Maybe there's an opportunity like this for videogame related clothing, someone should start a company that just makes the best videogame/comic/manga/whatever related clothes with good taste.

Those two shouldn't be able to be sold.
the opm one is pretty much ripped off the anime
the batman isn't even transformative and could be a drawing made by pretty much anyone, but D.C. comics has the copyright on batman.
The thing is; everything on there runs on the motto:
>"You're not guilty until they catch you"
You can upload what the hell you want, the staff rarely checks it if it breaks any copyright laws. They're dependent on people reporting them.
>and have the owner of the IP receive a cut
>And if you need permission, how do you get that.
I don't have any first hand experience regarding that but i don't think it's possible to do directly from there.
Even before you can "publish" those, you have to get an agreement/contract with the original owners, and even then it's highly unlikely some nobody will get the license to distribute any existing/copyrighted work on pages like redbubble.
>Can they do that legally
Absolutely illegal.
>Right but if you want to design the clothes completely, how would you do that.
Learn to saw, buy materials, make clothes.
>Maybe there's an opportunity like this for videogame related clothing,
There is always a demand for things like that.
It always depends on whether it's good, it's affordable and doesn't make anyone cringe.
And the clothing market is big.
I'd recommend focusing on women's clothes, though.

Since we're on the art board, you can try to simply draw/design clothes for now.
Maybe you can try your luck and get spotted by somebody big and they'll take care of the legal stuff for you.

Not him but there might be something along those lines coming. Matpat on Game/Film Theory talked about a company he's working with to create truly custom merch for those channels, and they have some already. Their goal is to make it available widely to all content creators but obviously they have a ways to go to get there. But looking at the merch they've made for Game Theory already I can definitely see it becoming a way to design and create unique and well made clothes, and potentially even ones inspired by certain games or characters.
