It really depends on the subject matter, if it's just vanilla styled porn of anthro pokemon, most normies won't be uppity about it.
Now it might be a different story if you start adding vore or scat into the mix.
If you're still worried, just do an open poll and see what percentage would like/dislike the change and go from there

The furthest I want to go is stuff I didn't even consider to be what I thought of when someone said yiff. What came to mind a few weeks ago was low quality strangely colored dog men fucking. But when I looked further into it, and searched for good stuff there actually were a lot of hidden gems.

I still don't like the stuff I originally thought was the entirety of yiff.

I'd say I like about 30% of the highest quality stuff on e621. But the stuff I like, I really like, and the stuff I dislike I feel disgusted by. Often stuff is in the uncanny valley.

I'd say I'm looking to draw stuff within the "Pretty furry" range of pic related. Where there is fur but it's really just colored skin. But then again, I could see myself drawing some more humanoid pokemon like Lucario, though also more anthro. Something like Lucario I wouldn't post immediately though, I'd wait to gauge feedback on tamer pics first..

Fizintine has a character (named Fiz) who seems somewhat furry I guess but I like a lot, and would think no one would see as a disgusting furry pic: https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1143005113184768001 (NSFW)

I would definitely go further than this if my audience wanted it.

Fiz and Gardevoir make it onto Danbooru which makes me think these aren't considered furry enough, but I do like many arts that are just a step above this that are banned on Danbooru and only make it onto furry boorus like e621. For instance, Lopunny is basically as humanoid as Gardevoir, but has fur and big ears so it's a step too far according to them at least. Same goes for Renamon.

This isn't really about furries it's about art, how to make a living and what topics can alienate an audience if you diversify your subject matters too much. You could apply this to many different subject matters. I know from my experience that audiences can be pretty picky when they only follow you for particular subjects. I wondered if anyone else on /ic/ could help considering I am not well versed in the furry subculture and only just realised I'm partial to a subsection of it, which could help or hinder my art following depending on how I go about it.

I only made the original image post a furry just so people like you could move on and get on with your life.

But on the subject of art, If you want to be respected and have an audience that won't mind a huge change in art subject, just leave the fandom behind and make art that can be respected in the first place with passion being a main drive for respect. The more fetishes you insert into your work, the more likely you'll turn someone away.
No matter how technically skilled you are, it's up to you to decide the potential content.
Sakimichan and DarkCookie are the top grossing patreon campaigns, and if you think about it, they generally do not deviated from busty women.
Sakimichan obviously had that one Beastars fanart, and DarkCookie does monster girl occasionally, but it's a very rare occurrence.
In general the internet favors bland consistency above all else.
This is the same for any content creator, not just porn artists.
If you want to do furry stuff, I'd recommend making a splinter account to hit that niche group.
It's a sliding scale between focus on patreon and commisions.
Commissioners will generally pay more for niche, but Patreons will generally pay more for general content.

Even moving to NSFW caused a major splinter without having it be totally sectioned off from my main account, which I ended up doing in the end.
It truly is the masses who rule, and the most popular is just long hair vanilla busty women looking hot, and probably those in bikinis rather than totally naked.
Tbf I like these too but as an artist I do have the urge to push creative boundaries instead of doing the same shit everyone is doing.

This isn't relevant as a reply but...
It frustrates me how much people say to not care about what people think, but as a starving artist you genuinely do need to pander to at least some degree, to know what your audience will enjoy. If you just do whatever the fuck you want with no thought on how it will be received, you won't be drawing for long.
I hope I can stop caring soon and start taking risks when my finances are stable, it'll be pretty damn liberating. This feeling expands much further beyond furries, couldn't really care less about that when it comes to the broader picture. It's like, even when I have my own business, own website, own supplies, own skill set, I am still subject to what I can and cannot draw.
