F YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

The entire structure of the head is fucked, the neck doesn't connect to the head like that.

Your sketch looks alright from what I can tell.
I think your biggest issue is actually drawing the features.
Did you use a ref for this?
If not, you should start using refs for your drawings since the only way to learn how to draw eyes, mouths and noses is to draw from references.
As for the hair, you might want to add a couple of strands of hair in there to give it some volume, it looks very flat if you only draw the outline of the hair. Just a couple of lines following the shape of the head should be fine and make it look more 3d

I drew it from imagination with no refs yeah, as a challenge since it's way harder than using a reference (to me at least).

I'll be off to practice more features then, thanks for the feedback.

It's actually pretty funny cause on another drawing I posted the critique I got was that the features were okay but the sketch and skeleton was all fucked so at least I'm glad I made some progress on this.

It's just one of those cases where a /beg/ attempts a new angle he never tried and ends up defaulting to a more familiar angle halfway through the drawing. You basically stitched together 2 angles here which I'm guessing is the reason why your head came out elongated as fuck and the features placed in awkward places.
As I said before just practice normal perspecives like profile, 3/4th, and front view until you get a very good intuition about the general anatomy of the head. I know it can be boring to grind the same perspectives many times, but it has to be done.

It doesn't look fruity just to say he looks like a fruit. He looks like a literal apple with a little branch coming out of the top.
Usually when the hair looks a bit messy you don't see a single string of hair raising on the top of the hair sticking out like a branch, now if you ask me appleman is a really cool and interesting concept. Add more waves to the air so it doesn't like a single block or a helmet or remove the branch on the top.
Face looks blocky, mouth should be higher and the ear is too big and you certainly can improve these things by practicing more but nothing bothers me more that the apple-ish look.

You can hold a pencil the wrong way your whole life and create a bad habit, just like playing guitar. If you get in the habit of holding your pick wrong, you wont see any immediately noticeable difference but for all intents and purposes it is decreasing the overall quality because you are not using your joints properly. You may not notice it because you have habituated yourself to shit posture. It’s not a big deal but you could probably save yourself a lot of joint pain over time by holding your pencil properly, just like other joint intensive activities. Have proper posture, it’s real. Even pianists try to sit properly so that their body is moving in harmony. Anons, I’ve started drawing a couple of months ago and damn it’s been so much fun. I have some questions, I googled them and read stickies/reddit threads, but I’d appreciate your perspective.

So far I’ve been drawing with graphite pencils from nature and photos. Is it worth spending time reading up on theory/fundamentals at this point? I feel like I can learn so much just from drawing from photos. Meanwhile I’ve looked through some books like Robertson’s How to Draw and can’t see how they will help me right now (I understand that perspective etc. will be crucial for drawing from imagination, but the question is specifically about this point of my progression). Dodson’s Key to Drawing is pretty much the only book on drawing I’ve read so far, it was particularly useful for learning some tricks about proportions.

Speaking about proportions: I do not use tracing but when I work on a detailed A4-sized drawing I often take a pic of my drawing and then overlay it on my PC with the original photo (after I’ve spent some time on fixing proportions on my own using angles, lines, negative space shapes, etc.). I understand that this is a crutch and I should get rid of this habit, but is this acceptable at least in the beginning, or is this pretty much tracing with extra steps?

I've seen the idea that 'real' drawing is when you draw from imagination, but is it ok I find it really fun and satisfying to just draw from photos for now?

Should I be using 2H or harder pencils for shading (I already use 2H for preliminary shapes)? Since I’ve discovered 2B, 6B, and 8B, I feel like I never need to shade that lightly. I did make a value scale and I see how light can 2H be, I just never see the point of it when I compare it to intense contrasts made by 8B (maybe my eye is not sufficiently trained yet to differentiate between these values).

Any other advice on pencils or books will be much appreciated. Also these threads has been very helpful to read.

>is it worth spending time reading up on theory/fundamentals at this point?
Yes, but also you should spend time conducting studies on what you think you're lacking which from the example you just presented is the "overlaying" thing you do.
>but is it ok I find it really fun and satisfying to just draw from photos for now?
You should always do what you enjoy doing, I know there's an ongoing meme on /ic/ that suggests you should always draw from imagination and maybe you should to push your abilities but if you don't find any fun in doing so then what's the point? Drawing from imagination isn't the only path.

I wouldn't worry so much about it now if I were you since you've been at it a couple of months, what you should work on is the pressure you apply to the pencil in order to create different shading. I have a 2B, 4B and 6B and they are great for figure drawing.
On a personal note I'd say you should try to work on "drawing what you see" to get rid of your overlay habit, pic related. I don't think this image gets posted or seen enough here on /beg/. I look forward to see your work Anon.

Your drawing and animation skills are just backing up a great mind, not anyone can pull it off.
Go also post on other threads though. Even if your raw drawing skill is a "beginner's" (I'd just say it's the style you chose for it), the end product is definitely not. Be proud and show it off everywhere.

Yes. Copying what's right in front of you is hard enough as it is, why do you think copying a vaguely formed image in your mind is gonna work out well? Do many studies of art and life, use references as the basis of your original work too, focus on learning the mechanics of painting and rendering and drawing and what separates good art from bad, and as your visual library grows you can start experimenting with your imagination more often.

I'm just a filthy beg and only actually started drawing recently but i seriously think that starting with reference is the best way to learn. Reference drawing, in my opinion, is the easiest way to produce good art and doesn't really require any understanding of certain concepts. It helps train your brain to draw what you see and allows you to focus on improving your raw technical abilities like controlling the pencil and how to shade. If your doing it right you get a good drawing that satiates your dopamine addiction as well as improves your proficiency with the pencil.

Eventually, when i've got what i deem as a decent control over the pencil, i'll switch focus to stuff like fundies and anatomy because at that point i'll know i have the ability to draw that complex forearm but only lack the understanding. At least that's my approach.

EXIF metadata probably. It makes your phone and most image viewers rotate the image to the correct orientation, but most websites strip it out.

If you open your image in GIMP for example (most other image editors probably work too), it will prompt you whether you want to rotate your image as the EXIF describes. What you want to do is say *not* to rotate it, then to rotate it with the transform tool, then export *without EXIF data*.

Hate, hatred, disappointment, it is my own sickly humanity which makes me unable to draw, why? talent. That is if talent exists I don't know.
When you're drawing it looks better, is this delusion, the delusion of my species, if ONLY I WAS A GLORIOUS PERFECT MACHINE, I could draw perfectly, but alas I'm human, and my hatred is historical.

To add on: the main goal in the first step (what some people call "gesture") of the sketch is getting the proportions right, and secondarily it's making sure that the drawing has an overall nice feel/flow before you start nailing things down more. However you want to accomplish that step is up to you, every artist has their own process, there is 't a set of rules you have to follow.
