What exactly makes this facial expression stiff and uncanny?

i don't know about stiff, but that whole scene was supposed to be about giving birth and you can clearly see that the writer has never ever seen how giving birth looks like for everyone involved on it. The guy is the father. He's supposed to be incredibly happy about this. But his expression looks more like the kind of face a simp would make when a random ethot likes one of his tweets.

If you're trying to figure out what's wrong with a drawing, it can help to cover up different parts of it with your hand and look at the other parts in isolation.
If I cover up the mouth, the eyes and nose look decent. But if I just leave the mouth uncovered, it still looks kinda weird. So I'm gonna say the problem is the mouth.

The eyebrows and lack of nose contours. When someone smiles, their face muscles all scruntch up. His smile, his upper lips should be more curved making his cheek muscles protrude which should give his nose more contour with the smile lines. Eyebrows should be more expressive, maybe even a forehead wrinkle, but it is stylized.

Uncanny valley, we're super good at reading faces (also means most of us would accept a broken ankle or weird foot on a character). It's a hidden weakness in using photos for extra realism, people rarely makes faces quite matching the situation you want (here he's looking at the "camera", not the baby, and the smile looks copypasted from another face, he doesn't look like he's crying, crying of joy involves a lot of the face, pic related). Funnily enough the baby is way more convincing. I've seen worse in mainstream comics, like girls with porn faces during a fight.

When you smile, your eyes smile too. Plus his smile just looks off. It looks pained and weird. It's very likely that the lady that drew it didn't deviate from her reference too much out of fear of going off model

Most murrican comic art is fugly with only nice covers but I actually thought saga was pretty nice art-wise throughout. I enjoyed it though later on it did get a bit too woke for my tastes with that token tranny.. IT's dumb expression in the OP but most of it is bretty gud, you're just crabs.

How is Saga? I am mainly a manga reader, favorite one is Dorohedoro, but I really liked comics like Hellboy and Bone. A friend of mine said this one is a masterpiece but the art style isn't exactly my thing

It can't hold a candle to Hellboy and Bone but I enjoyed first few issues. There's a lot of trippy character designs. Lying cat is neat. I dropped it in the later issues though, it doesn't really know what to do with itself after a time skip.
