I am planning on asking another (better) artist if I can be of assistance to him, what can go wrong???

So there's this one artist who is totally backlogged in (digital) commissions and they're taking more commissions because of the covid crisis (lost their day job), and I was thinking of offering a hand in helping him color his stuff.

I am spending my (ample) free time learning to paint, and often like using other people's lineart to practice with anyway so I thought I might as well be useful to someone. Also, I will be copying the artist's coloring style so the clients are getting what they're paying for and I get to learn something new. The artist can always touch up on the final painting or just not use my work too.

I am making it clear that I don't need to be credited, just want to keep practicing and maybe help someone along the way. I will be showing the artist examples of my own paintings.

What can go wrong? Is there something I should keep in mind before offering help?

it seems like it would be more of a hassle for someone who is already very busy to work out logistics and timing.
If you make any mistakes, then they have to take time to fix them.
And it would be unfair to the commissioners because they didn't pay for you to do the work, they paid for that better artist.
Not a helpful idea at all.

why not? mangakas have assistants and celebrities have ghostwriters. if someone offered to make my work easier i'd accept it

that sounds stupid, if the result is good and approved by the brand name then i don't see what the problem is. but i dont commission people.

They do, but a bad assistant is far, far worse than no assistant at all. Why would this artist take a risk on you, some rando they don't know? It's just so unlikely to be worthwhile for them.

If you really just want to get practice in with no pay, you'd be better off working on personal pieces, or doing drawfag requests.

An assistant? Most people just put job listings on Indeed. Monster and LinkedIn are for the corporate side, but I've seen many, many, many small and single-person businesses on Indeed.
