What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

The moon is not lit right. The crescent should be facing the sun. The stars shouldn't literally be in a star shape. Here is a vid on how to make stars in photoshop if you have it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXxQUB5yDVQ

Paint some back glow on the clouds around the edges so they look more like they're being lit by the sun. Also make the sky more gradient where its darker near the edges and more glowing near the sun. For the character you got a long way to go mate. All i can tell you is to draw from photos and learn some anatomy before trying any kind of anime style. The lines are very wobbly as well, so just keep drawing and try to practice making straights and curves in one stroke. At first you wont get it even in 20 tries, but eventually you'll get that down to 10 tries and then 5 or less. DeviantArt might get shit on here, but there's alot of tutorials on there that are good. Just search stuff like "water tutorial" or "clouds tutorial".

Thanks for the detailed critique anon. Indeed it's the sun who's lighting the moon so it's literally paradoxal... I didnt think about it. About the sky though I wanted to make the whole thing look surrealist (like how it seems the sky is white but then it takes the shape of a cloud covering the night space), if you got any tips to make it clear it was on purpose rather than unintentional I'd like it.

The star video is appreciated, as well as the linework critique.

Water reflects the the color of the character but also is in shadow becasue the light is coming from the background. If she is showering under a waterflow then it could make a lot of splash with waterdrops (and possibly mist) everywhere especially if the light is coming from the background.

You need to pick if you want to use screentones for shading or regular greyscale, mix of both isn't stylistically consistent.
You also have to be careful not to make your piece look busy when using screentones. Either leave them off in the highlight areas on the face and hair - or if you're going for a lowlight scenario, put full on black shadows in some places like under the neck and the folds of the clothing, and a few bright white highlights in a few select areas, like the eyes or earring.

Yeah I think the main issue is just the angle that the upper body is at, combined with the lower body. I think the shapes you have for the bottom half are really nice so I'd suggest changing the upper torso angle instead. have it so her back and left shoulder is showing mostly. I think you could probably keep the head at the same angle, just call it a good ol SHAFT head tilt

Cute, it's always nice to see someone do watercolor here. Look up and practice some wet-in-wet techniques though, even if you want to mostly go for a cell-shaded look you'll need it in areas like the blush to get a smooth transition.

Is lineart really worth it anymore?
I like lineart but my god, sometimes it is such a chore. I'm trying to make a design reference for this character, but goddamn I swear it'd be so much easier to just PAINT most of these details. However, this is my style, and I really don't want to have to change it? Perhaps I should try lining with something that's not incredibly thin, I'm not sure.

Do any of you struggle with lineart? Do you prefer painting to avoid it? Any critique?

The lineart is the fine line between what makes Men and pussies, stop being such a pussy and set that stabilizer to zero. With lineart you may see the artist's hand at work and even go as far as recognizing them since each individual possesses a unique signature trait when conveying line it's like another language.

>> No.4548787

>>4548740
There's no weight or texture variety in the lines, and there's very little contrast, so as a viewer I'm not sure where I should be looking. What do you want to emphasize? Of course the eyes stand out. It's common to locate most of the contrast in the face, as this is where people will focus 80%+ of their attention.

I love making lines myself but if I do them that way, i.e. ultra clean @ high stabilizer, I hate it like I actually hate it. Ironically it's very unforgiving despite the stabilizer. Maybe try building up your lines gradually with a slightly larger brush set at about 60-80% transparency. Far more forgiving on a tablet, and you'll get some nice natural weight variance, and the good kind of imperfection.

This is some really insane linework. It's thin, clean, and detailed. Very few artists aside check those criteria. I think this looks really nice on your stuff. To answer your question there are some ways to cut down the amount of time lines take
1) less clean lines. Most online anime art's lines are actually not that clean, in fact I fail to think of anybody I follow that has lines this clean
2) conserving detail and lines (grouping hairs, not drawing every single tooth on a zipper...)
3)using a textured brush. Sometimes using a rougher brush helps distract you from spending too much time on perfect lines
4) using thicker lines. That way you will worry less about small details
5) going traditional. traditionally lining art is much faster and you can scan it and do your coloring digitally
6) using expressive lines. examples would be shigeto koyama and Shigenori Soejima are both good examples. lines that are still clean, but have lots of width variations, rather low line count but ones with a lot of intent, this would be a pretty serious departure from what you are doing but some people really like it

I agree, I think lineart is a huge part of what makes an artist unique and adds their signature flair. However for me personally, this extremely clean lineart is what I've always done for my 'signature'. Perhaps I'll try something else, but high stabilizer is my jam.
>>4548787
Imo lineart isn't supposed to be the main tool to show emphasis on an area, that's more coloring/shading unless you're going for an extremely cartoony look. But yes, this style is THE most unforgiving lineart style out there. It takes a huge amount of time. I don't blame you for hating it.
>>4549038
I may experiment, though 'vector shit' makes me laugh.
>>4549107
Thank you very much for the praise. I know it's a very abnormal thing, I thought anime artists did it very clean until I studied further, but I already got hooked on this style. I may test how much textures affect the linework, since it could help me speed things up but still be ultra clean. Also, I did not actually draw each zipper- that's a technique I found on SAI and was actually a zipper brush.

Not that anon, but my two cents. Her mid-torso seems too squat, like she's been squished down and her spine compressed by about 3 inches. She should be "stretched" out a little bit.

The other issue that immediately jumps out at me is that her hand doing the peace sign is completely in the wrong area. I know you're going for stylization over realism, but look at the hand - the bones make no sense where they would have to be right now. Your thumb needs to connect to the rest of the arm, whereas its just connecting into nothing at the moment.

Lastly, the 63 kind of just sticks out right now without any further work. I presume it's because she's a vocaloid, so it's her model/manufacture number, but you need to work on it so it looks like it's been printed/grafted onto her arm, and also so that it looks that it wraps around her arm as a proper 3d object as opposed to just kind of looking flat right now.

That said, I think the other anon is being too harsh. You have more work to do, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "just awful."

Happy to help. I think perspective drawing is one of those things that's hard for everyone. You should break down any drawing into basic fundamental shapes and then build from there, if you aren't doing that already. It helps me personally catch some mistakes before I go too far and then realize I need to correct.

Sorry, I don't quite follow as I'm new to digital painting. The color I used is just what emerges from using a multiply layer using the base color. If attempting the same with greys it looks even worse. Now if you are implying the shading of the image was originally done in grayscale, nothing on the process gif seems to indicate that.

>> No.4553279

>>4553266
Make a new layer above the flat colours layer.
On your new layer, pick a grey and paint on an area of skin that you want to shade.
You should have a layer option that is set to "Normal", click on that and change it to Multiply.
See how that works.

>> No.4553289

>>4553266
The color used in the multiplication layer is not gray, and it's not a color you can colorpick, not to mention the alpha also changes the result. You can get the color that was used for the multiplication layer by dividing the shaded part by the base color. Try using the #CEAFA5 color in your multiplication layer.

Are you drawing with a screenless tablet? I bought a pen display last year because it was annoying me how much I hated doing digital lineart despite never being even close to annoyed with lining art traditionally. Since strong lineart is part of my ideal style I ended up looking into and getting a screen tablet and it helped me out a whole bunch, it's still painful at times but nowhere close as it used to be.

I think the main issue is really just that the book is too far down on her legs. Assuming a normal leg length, where the book is now it would be leaning off of her knees (since she is sitting in a chair) and pretty much falling. If you move it up and then maybe just add some more shadow on the dress where the book is currently placed, everything should look a bit better.
