IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

previous >>4526251

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
NO FUN ALLOWED
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have atleast read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
DO NOT STUDY LOOMIS.
Don't ever think of buying a Loomis book.

Normal people don't need to "grind fundamentals" or "study Loomis" to become better at drawing. They start drawing at an early age because they think it's cool, someone teaches them why they need to know, they get better at it naturally and end up becoming good at drawing and making it.

>> No.4529304

>>4529209
I have never found grinding boxes by itself to be very useful. Maybe it's useful if you're very very new. An alternative method is to just start constructing things you want to draw using simplified 3D forms (not just boxes) right now, and identify and correct mistakes as you go.
The thing about "doing Loomis" is that if you're MERELY going through the motions of drawing a lot of Loomis heads, it's unlikely to help much. You need a certain level of mental engagement and critical thinking to get anything out of it. You need to be willing to practice construction as its own skill for a good amount of time, you need to be constantly identifying mistakes in your work and figuring out how to fix them. You need to be picking and choosing what sorts of tools you want to develop that fit your way of thinking and working, and fit the kind of art you want to make. There's a zillion different construction methods out there because construction is a rather personalized thing, and different people find affinities for different shapes and different ways of breaking things down.
Being able to apply this level of analysis to your own work requires a certain baseline level of mileage. You need to be able to look at your drawings and go, ok, that part doesn't look too bad, but this part looks wrong, and it's because the proportions are off, or it's because this form should be rotated more to the side, or whatever. That's the stage where you really start to see gains from practicing construction. When you're a complete and total beginner, everything you draw is equally shitty and wrong, and you have no vocabulary for articulating why besides "everything looks like shit". Thus new /beg/s treat Loomis heads like enemies in an MMO, aimlessly grinding out shitty heads in the hopes of gaining exp. Inevitably, when this doesn't produce any noticeable improvement, they conclude that Loomis and the idea of construction itself is a sham.

>> No.4529313

>>4529304
Of course not everyone follows this exact path. Some people catch on faster than others. Some people are able to start making noticeable gains from practicing construction right away. Others needs to acquire more mileage and comfort with the pencil before they can really start being appropriately critical of their own drawings. We all learn at different paces.
If you feel like you're able to apply this level of thinking to your drawing, then "doing Loomis" could very well be beneficial to you, but you should also do Hampton, and Huston, and Bridgman, and study artists that you like, and really just absorb as much information as you can from as many sources as possible, because no one thinks or sees things exactly like you do and ultimately the responsibility will be on you to synthesize your own understanding.

Please work on drawing refs of real humans. It will help you when you draw figures that aren't naturalistic because you won't have to guess anywhere near as much. Otherwise, your poses, proportions, anatomy, and dimensional grasp will essentially be highly flawed guesswork. It is smart to start small without getting into values/colors and not get too attached to your exercises. Enjoy yourself, have fun projects, and don't let yourself get burned out from creating art, but remember that you will improve significantly if you study the foundations and your experience creating the things you want will become more enjoyable and solid as a result

Also, to any of the pedophiles: stop being pedophiles.

These images are why I am against recommending Loomis to /beg/. Studying basic Loomis is essentially studying cartoons which is not at all what beginners should be doing. Please, beginners, study real humans or images of real humans using websites like these:

https://quickposes.com/en/gestures/timed
https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing

/ic/ also usually has a reference thread and you can obviously find your own images to study. Beginners need to improve their sight drawing as well as construction, and simply studying cartoons isn't going to help build the necessary foundations. Sight drawing is an essential part of learning fundamentals!

With sight drawing, make sure to look at what you are drawing far more than you look at the page. An instructor of mine explained it as the "90/10 rule", aka 90% looking and 10% drawing. You are improving how you see, and how you absorb the visual information that you are studying. Your skills in this area will only improve with practice over time, so don't be discouraged when your exercises look shitty.

Shorter exercises = focus on the gesture using simple lines. Look up "gesture drawing" if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Longer exercises = apply what you've learned after doing gesture drawings and build up your other sight drawing skills. Notice the negative space to help you accurately gauge the proportion and distance of things in the image.

Also, remember not to draw too small, especially on printer sized paper. You will only be hurting yourself if your exercises are as tall as your thumb.

Draw larger, or use a smaller pencil/brush. Focus on making straight lines, parallel to each other, not S curve scribbles. Hatching is one of the few legit "grinds", you have to just do it until it becomes muscle memory.
Also, try working with only crosshatching, as an exercise. Don't use values like this, only use solid lines to get the same results, or close to it. Go look up the masters of it, like Dore and Durer. You can mis the two, but while trying to get a handle on it, stay with one or the other to really see how to build value.
One assignment we did in college was to fill boxes, like 1" square, with cross-hatching, trying to go from say 10%, to 90%, in a row. You learn how much linework and what density to get closer to the values you want. (Obviously, with a pure crosshatched drawing, you wouldn't want to use a toned page, at least not at first.)

Alright this will sound weird but I REALLY need help with this. I have some really old drawing books that I want to preserve, my grandfather learned how to draw using them and he was pretty good.

I want to both make digital copies of them and preserve individual sheets. Since the paper is already frail I don't have the option of putting them on those portable scanners which require the paper to go through them, I'll need a handheld scanner that I can use to swipe on top of the paper, but this is such a niche market that amazon reviews seem to be useless here.

When it comes to archival of the paper I'm thinking about visiting a local archive and asking where to buy the proper plastic bags, because I know that they cannot have certain properties.

As a reward, if I get any help at all from here I'll post the digital archive for download for as long as possible. Since I value the sharing of information.

Sculpting something grants me no insight on how to draw it, unfortunately. Sculpting is something I find intuitive, since you can recreate something as it actually appears or should appear. Drawing, meanwhile, seems to be about crafting complex illusions: you arrange clusters of lines (which don't even exist) on a 2D plane, and the result somehow ends up being interpreted by the human mind as a 3D object. I don't know how to approach that task, regardless of the subject. It might sound like I'm being deliberately obtuse, since this seems to just come naturally to a lot of people, but I really have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. I can copy existing drawings fairly well, but I'm completely lost if I try to draw an object that's right in front of me.

Right now I'm alternating between studying perspective and playing around with wrapping lines in the hope that this all just clicks together at some point.

As an absolute beginner who can’t draw ellipticals, should I start traditional or just buy a digital pad? Would it just be worth to go straight for it so I don’t have to re learn digital later?

Why can I see that much of the side of her breast? It makes her arm look way too small proportionally, she looks like a child (is that the intention?). Also, her buttocks also simply don't go far up enough, and her cranium is too circular. I'd recommend you look into Hampton and Vilppu's stuff for anatomy and form, as well as the landmarks of the body (for example, the sacrum is a handy landmark for drawing the buttocks, Proko has a good video on that, Hampton has a section dedicated to that in his book as well). And if you want to learn how to make your stuff "less pedo", look into the proportions of the human body, I believe Loomis could help you out in that regard.

Don't put in any features for now, just do the basic ball and jaw and side plane. The goal is to make them look 3D and not flat. For starters you should draw both the horizontal and vertical midline wrapping all the way around the sphere. Loomis shows lots of examples.

Don't look like any gestures I've ever seen.
Work on your proportions, in particular the legs. In the 2 left one's the legs are almost twice the lenght of the torso + head, that's almost as bad as yaoi manga level proportions.
After that I guess you could start introducing forms to your figure drawings and start reading vilppu to really get into gesture.

>>4531374
ctrl+paint has a lot of video's that deal with basics It's not all about digital either.
Also New masters academy had at least one free beginner course when I checked there a while ago, maybe it still is so you won't even have to pirate it.
