Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Here's an interesting question.
What kind of "anime artstyle" do you wish to "emulate" or at least reach. Don't say "I wanna make original stuff" because that's unlikely before you manage to emulate "anime", otherwise you'll look western.

Western cartoons are made to BE animated. Most modern western cartoons are made to be simple to utilize in flash for the purposes of mass production. That also why most old cartoons have the thick line art style making it easier to stick out and animate.
Not all western cartoons are made very symplistic but a majority are. I don't think it's bad if you copy from the show bibles that are made simply with ideas in mind and would encourage others to emulate styles of the show director, but not straight from the show.

You just do? There's no secret. Some of them have kinda fucked settings for pressure sensitivity that require you pressing down all the way. The default smooth watercolor is basically a hard round. Turnip pen is a hard roud, fill-in mono pen is a hard round.

First thing is set a hotkey to turn on/off color mixing.

Other thing is make your own hard/soft round. My main brushes are hard round opacity/flow jitter, soft round, hard round size jitter, and a chalk brush. CSP is awesome because you can bind size jitter and flow jitter on/off with shortcuts. So what was 3-4 brushes and a blender preset in PS can be 1 brush.

Play with the settings, learn to make a brush. Flow is basically jitter. You have way more options for curve adjustments. Follow this vid to make something close to the PS defaults but her mixing settings are garbage. I like 10-13-0 or 100-100-80. I usually paint with blending off. The main brushes I use are the top 4, sometimes the realistic watercolor with replace alpha blend mode. The gouache/dry gouache brushes are excellent by default.

I've been studying some doujins from pija and I have a few questions in regards to pic related.
For sample #1 I see these dots close up on the skin of characters, what it their purpose? Is this done when rendering?
For sample 2 he uses a similay texturing effect for backgrounds, is this done using a specifc brush?
For sample 3, pija always add shading to the privates of his female characters, however I see that it's somehow layered and linear, did he just use an airbrush and vertical lines for this?

The answer you are looking for are screentones, they are used traditionally in comics and manga for applying varying tones. They can be done digitally as well in every graphical software albeit CSP has a plentiful asset store where you can download them for free easily. Sample 1 would be a flat screentone applied to an area to simulate a skintone. Sample 2 looks like a screentone with a botch of a hatching brush on the edge and 3 looks like either a screentone used with a gradient or soft eraser. You can apply them after lineart as pictured here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKHPhhps2HU&t=41m52s
As you can see. When they zoom on the finished product it has little dots under the cap's hood but when look from far away it looks like gray. Since such technique has become a staple on manga its widely used in all your favorite doujins

Thank you for the answer, that clarifies a lot of things.
Any particular reason to make the shading on sample 3 linear as opposed to a smooth gradiant? It's for the skin between the legs so I thought it would make more sense to have something really smooth as opposed to vertical lines.

whatever you draw always start from the biggest shapes, then draw the second biggest, then the third, and so on, until you are satisfied. Start light and go back to bigger details to make them darker when the line from the smaller details make them harder to understand. Your main objective should be clarity

i can see your thought process, it's really coming together. keep working on your basic forms (practice them clean and precise, and also practice drawing quick impressions). furthermore, try working traditionally for a while too. i can see that you're having some trouble with line quality, which is much easier to improve when working traditionally.
keep it up, anon

I would recommend trying out some alternative construction methods for the pelvic area besides the skirt/underwear shape. The problem with the underwear shape is that the "loops" you draw for the legs aren't actually real shapes on the body, rather they're just byproducts of the way the legs attach to the pelvis, and thus they're liable to confuse you when trying to construct more complex poses from imagination. So I think it's better to just think in terms of pelvis (which can be represented with just a box) -> femurs -> construct the muscles on top, with knowledge of where specifically the muscles attach to the pelvis. Rather than trying to just do it all in one shape. It's more work but I think it will pay off.
- t. one /beg/ to another, this is something I've been thinking about lately, someone better can correct me if I'm wrong.

i don't know why nobody has pointed out the really bad shading and drappery in her shirt.
the light is coming from where exactly? the light in her leg is coming from above judging from the shadows in the back of her leg but her left leg is completely in the shadow then her right arm has that hard shadow in the back but also near the biceps so is the light coming from the side? and her side of her body is in the shadows so it makes no sense just like the light in her hair and tail.
it feels like you were trying to mimic that style that has hard tones but it ended looking like a bad attemp at shading like in the knee if you follow the that light that goes from her thight and graps around her knee it makes 0 sense the same with the calves they are being squished so the part that is pushed to her sides shouldn't have the same tone but they do, seems like you eyeballed that part same with the knee.

If you are gonna draw titpockets is better to not be painted with that realistic style it looks off because the titpocket is a really stylized way of drawing a shirt and yours looks like a paper cut off specially if you drawn that lower part in that way really flat, how come the tits are so big but there's those folds but the lower part that isn't being pushed or being thight on to her body has none see what im talking about, a little tip the nipples dont point outside in that straight angle they are pointing a little upwards and if theres no bra they should sag they way they do it's up to you but rn they look like bad implants and the nipples just make them worse just like the abs.
