IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have atleast read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

>> No.4516694

Post your drawings to get more targeted advice.
Unfortunately you're right to at least some degree. Using boxes and cylinders does not automatically make everything easy. There is still a hump that you have to get over as a new /beg/ where everything is hard no matter how you do it. You just have to grind it out until you get more comfortable with controlling the pencil and thinking in 3D. However, once you do attain a certain baseline of experience, constructing things in terms of simplified forms is certainly easiER than just trying to wing it.
One simple thing that you need to check that no one talks about enough is your proportions. There's no point in worrying about your perspective or the planes of your forms etc, if you have a tiny little head sitting on a massive rib cage that's 5 times bigger than it.

It is hard to help with this without the ref Anon, I could only guess how they would look like. What I can suggest is that you keep an eye out on the high end values and use more of them.

Just in case you could consider upping the contrast of your screen to make the high end values more apparent, that can be an issue with digital medium since your screen can also act as a variable in the work you create. But do not make it so strong that it blinds you.

>Is it gonna hinder me going straight to digital
Short answer is, it's debateable.
If you keep it simple and restrict yourself to the brush and eraser tool it should be fine.
Especially since you already have it, it would be a shame not to use it.

Most people say it does hinder you, claiming reliance on digital tools build bad habits especially during the learning process.
It's also said that Digital drawing skills don't transfer as well to traditional, as the other way around.
However that is what people say because everyone says it, how much of that is based on actual experience and not herd mentality is questionable.
There's people who started with digital and their art is fine.

>with all the fuckery I will have to learn to use the tools properly on top of the fundies?
You should only need basic shortcuts, navigating the program and brush settings to start.
For digital 101 tutorials go to ctrl+paint, that has videos for all that jazz.

So I started the drawabox thing and bought the fancy pen it recommends even though I normally use pencil because it was all like "no you gotta use pen for this like these ones #notsponsored", and started drawing lines. I followed the advice it says about drawing "quick, confident lines" because it said it was a "critical point" and all that... and started getting gross, scratchy lines. Consistently. It feels like my pens are running out of ink, even though they are perfectly fine slow, and my lines look horrible. I can get it a little closer if I grind down with all of my might, but it's still not a solid line and that feels very uncomfortable. I've tried with different types of paper to the same effect. Also tried my fancy writing pen, same effect. Pencil works fine.

Have I been japed?

Look man, we can't study for you. YOU have to put in the time, that's all there really is to it. Learn the bones, learn the muscles, draw from ref. Repeat.

>>4518168
You're proportions are off, so work on measuring, it looks like you got tunnel vision and made the legs too big for the body on the left. I would also say worry less about contours and go learn how to do mannequins and 3d forms, go through loomis figure drawing for all it's worth and villpu drawing manual, both are good to start.

How does this look to you guys? I am struggling with getting the colors right working from monochrome, I was doing direct color but greyscale is just so much better. The only problem is with all the layer types and gradient map I just can't seem to get it to match perfectly.

yeah anon, thats... kinda the plan. I'm ok with this because failure is an essential part of the process and I have thick skin. Here's where I was a year ago, so that's progress. I haven't done a lot with value, and that's like my 5th attempt at a full figure, so I'm ok with this. :P

>>4518270
with gesture it's alright to get wonky proportions, I didn't realize till after I posted that they were probably gesture.
I would say focus less on individual contours and more on the whole shape, you could do a leg with like, 3 lines for example. They all kinda have that tunnel vision look and wonky proportions, so maybe just do some longer ~20 min studies and measuring drills. Proko has a good vid on measuring proportions.

looks like your pens are shit or your paper isn't meant for ink. are you drawing on smooth paper (like printer paper) or rough paper? rougher paper is better for graphite/pencil/charcoal and will suck your pens dry in a heartbeat.

I thought of that, so I tried printer paper as well and that didn't work either.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen size F. Recommended specifically for this. Virtually brand-new when I started but given how much I've abused it just trying to get the first lesson done I'm sure it's awful now. Works perfectly fine if I'm writing with it at least. Also tried with my Lamy Safari pen which is a writing pen with the same luck. Can't remember if I tried the Faber Castell PITT B or not too.
