Post some of your character designs so we can tell you. As a general rule, conveying posture, emotion and attitude is vitally important, other than that you should use a good mix of textures and clothing designs, and if it works in the context (e.g. capeshit or anime) try to incorporate some kind of motif or symbol into the design that relates to the character in some way. Most importantly, though, please pyw so we can give specific pointers.

It’s pretty cool reading people’s thoughts like in your art blog, I wish more people did it that way instead of just posting their sketches and then nothing else.

Regarding military: It’s alright, depends on the MOS you’re in. In some MOS you work 45 hrs/week like a normal civvie job. You also get the GI bill after, if you need that. I love being in the military except the MOS itself, but I hate paper pushing in general. I am trying to switch to something more physical and challenging. I think in a way it helps with my art, the physical fitness and the day job routine keeps my mind in shape and gives me better time management. Admittedly it's a bit of a weird question and I didn't get a response from /beg/, but I'll try here.

I just can't sketch digitally. My problem is that I have a big problem with scale. I look at an A4 piece of paper and I know my canvas. I know what my proportions should ideally be and the space I have to work with. Procreate doesn't even tell you how far you're zoomed in, so there's times where I zoom into the canvas, sketch something and it turns out to be fucking 200x200 pixels and it's a blurry mess when I try to make it bigger.

I sketch with a very thin line (0.5 mm mechanical pencil) and drawing with a small pen tool without zooming in leads to wobbly, messy lines. Is there anything I can do to better emulate sketchbook drawing on an iPad?

This answer is not going to go well... but consider marketing yourself on r*ddit.
If you make a piece of Tifa, for example, post your work on r/FinalFantasy and r/ChurchOfTifa (if it's at least slightly lewd).
Zelda at r/Zelda and r/NintendoWaifus.
The trick is to get an active sub, but if you do primarily nsfw, be mindful of what you market where.
You'll still get plenty of requests for freebies, but given it's overall popularity, you're almost guaranteed to get some commissions to trickle in, and most are pretty reasonable clients. Plus, the more you market yourself, the more familiar you'll be, and the more likely people will start inquiring.
The catch is you have to make sure you're not just spamming advertisements of your works. You want to approach it more like you're showing yourself off.
Outside of that, you just have to get your work out there. Deviantart, hf, posting explicits in r34 (if you do them), etc.

>> No.4521510

>>4521410
There's plenty of books that talk about value. Read the stickied thread. It's something most people struggle with, early on, in school as well as anons here. It all boils down to one thing - training your eye to see value. It takes time, effort, and experience. It's something you can do anywhere - waiting for a bus, eating dinner, whatever, you can look around you, and see values, and try to figure out what they are by eye, in your head. And then expand your focus - what do values look like at noon, compared to sunset? What do values look like in the winter, vs. the summer? At night, with a lamp on?
It's all training your eye. And when you try to mix color to match a value, it's one more point of data for you.
When I studied, we didn't have computers, so we'd check our values by xeroxing our paintings (gouache and watercolor) to see them in black and white. You have apps that can do it for you. Take color photos, and switch from greyscale to color and back. See what hues translate to what value.
Train your eye. You can't read your way to doing it. Books can help, but it's all about your eye, your brain, and translating what you see onto the canvas.

Here's what Sheldon Borenstein says about gesture:

> Gesture is not a drawing. Gesture is what you put INTO your drawing. You need the life force in your drawing.
> There's no one way to do a gesture. It's personal. It's what YOU want. Gesture doesn't necessarily have detail, but it does have an attitude. It lives.
> It's not scribble to scribble. It's scribble for a reason: to get the story down.
> You generally draw gestures super light. On top of this rough, you put on your shapes, form, anatomy, value, and colour. The tough part is keeping this gesture (story) as you go on to the details. Everything you do after the gesture needs to plus it.

As the resident funnyman among friends, I say that humor is two things: Wit and restraint. Wit means the ability to recognize scenarios that can make for an interesting situation, usually something you don't see often; irony is a great source of humor. Restraint refers to the ability to recognize when to play the comedian, as there is a time and place for everything. Restraint involves recognizing social cues, social consequences, acknowledging when the joke will fall flat, not repeating jokes, mixing up other aspects (usually contrasting concepts, like philosophy) to break up a constant series of half funny novelties. Oh, that's important too: novelty. Take advantage of unique circumstances, and avoid shitty puns and common jokes.

Don't listen to retards, copying master drawings and drawing sculptures was always and still is a staple of learning, along with drawing from life. If you're a compete beginner you'll need to focus on getting proportions right etc. (Brague plates are focused on that). Copying drawings teaches anatomy, copying paintings will aid your technique and perception of color. You need to supplement it with constructive drawing, not just blindly copy the brush marks, when you understand the form of what you're drawing it shows. You also copy to learn particular stylisation and aesthetics. Copying from greatest artists will help you the most, but you need to enjoy the process too, so choose what excites you. >what is the "right way" to do gesture/figure draw?
In a classroom, with a teacher, and a live model.

as i give myself a minute for each sketch, am i supposed to be constructing them? just copying the lines?
No.

Here's how a typical figure drawing 101 class would go:

10-15 minutes of short, 1-2 minute gesture poses, to warm up.
One or two longer poses, to capture the whole form, focusing on mass and contour.
One long pose, for shading and everything else.
Towards the end of the semester, the class will leave the short poses aside more for long, multi-session poses for finished drawings.

Construction has no place in figure drawing. YOU HAVE A REFERENCE. Construction is when you don't. Figure drawing is all contour and shading and line.

>i've been doing them by basically trying to replicate them through the lines, but i'm just afraid of putting hours into this shit and not actually getting anything out of it because i'm not doing them "correctly"

This is why art classes exist. Find a local community college or adult education or art coop that offers live model classes, and take one. Don't even fight me on this. Yes, you can afford it, if you make some sacrifices.

>> No.4524601

>>4521983
You do both. Gesture is over-emphasized entirely too much here. It's a way to learn how to capture pose and narrative in a pose. It's not something that requires this much sweat over.
Most art students are working on multiple things at the same time, you could be taking a beginning drawing class, figure drawing, and a painting class your first semester, and tackling ALL of the topics in them. The fundamentals have a ton of overlap, so they tie into each other.

Nothing wrong with it at all - many if not most of the big galleries and museums allow students to copy paintings on site, doing this. Most artists deconstruct other artists while learning, I did it, and could tell you which artists I was deconstructing, before I struck out on my own style. It's really common in sculpture, students copy Rodin and Michelangelo, or parts of their works, to learn.
Look at music. How do beginners learn the guitar? They learn other people's songs. Same thing.

am i retarded? i don't trust my friends and family to be honest with me about my drawings. they say things like "i wouldnt be able to do that" which i like... yea objectively you dont know how to draw 5pp because you never spent any time learning to draw. of course you don't know how. but i'm not impressed by your spanish just because i don't speak spanish. that's not a fucking skill when your parents raised you speaking that language. so im like ok heres the vanishing points. everything curves toward them. then i can construct cubes in perspective. then i can put cylinders inside a pyramid inside the cube. i can draw some people inside cubes. their proportions are a little fucked but the lense being warped is pretty forgiving. ive done all i can to not make them look flat. ive done what i can anatomcally which isnt much. i can draw any car from any angle very fast. that im confident about. i really can't render for shit. i HATE the composition of the picture. i think the scaling is way off. and i can't figure out how to draw grass and a corn field. would appreciate some honest opinions and advice. beg ignored my picture 3 threads in a row.

Not retarded, but your work is really stiff and looks wonky. The guy on the left isn't flat on the ground in perspective and his shoulders look dislocated, the guy on the right looks really short. Look how long his arm is, it looks like they go down to his knees. The details on the jeep are all at different alignments and it looks very vary long (it isn't foreshortened properly). The house also isn't aligned properly and looks like it's very big and placed diagonally on the field, and the missiles top right are literally paper thin. I don't think there's any specific thing that'll help, but you can definitely study some more references and keep working on the perspective. Remember to apply it consistently to all objects in the scene.

At what point is it acceptable to ask for a refund from an artist? Or just give up and forget about it? I feel like it causes me more stress than it’s worth. I commissioned a plush of a (now former) friend’s character just over 4 years ago. The artist is well respected and has been shown to deliver. I paid £200+ on the day that I ordered. Over 4 years following their social media they seem to have done everything but work on my commission, I haven’t worded my grievances until now and our interactions have only ever been polite and fairly pleasant.

I’m a semi-professional artist myself and I know dealing with clients can be tough sometimes and I never want to be rude but I just feel like complete shit for starting to get pretty upset and mad especially now during the current global climate. they’ve been pissing me around now for years and the person who it was a gift for isn’t so close with me anymore. But their friendship meant the world to me and I feel like it’s still worth sending to them as it has a lot of sentimental value. The whole situation just dredges up shitty feelings about myself and the friendship that fell apart.

That depends on what your definition of "good" is. Industrial design is much more easier to study/practice as it doesn't involve a lot of knowledge other than perspective, primitive figures and how to color/render your piece so the idea can be sold to your client before you start working on the actual piece.
Don't look at it from an age perspective, any skill worth it's salt takes time so you're better off practicing right now instead of leaving it for tomorrow.

What matters is presenting an object that can be understood by your average joe, there are dozens of famous designers from past decades whose sketches looked like doodles but you knew what they were trying to convey.
Granted, you shouldn't settle for mediocrity. Just start working on it now, the experience and ability will come as long as you put in time.

I've been using both mediums for the past month and I feel like each method has it's own pros and cons. Some books offer a much deeper explanation regarding their techniques/methods to draw, however there are times where I feel like the illustrations are not enough to fully understand the concept and resort to their videos, which clarify my doubts and may break down it even further in the middle of the act.

As for tutorials they feel much more fleshed out because you actually see them in action, explaining what they're doing as they go through it. But I suppose that due to time constraints, they can't spend too much time on a topic for too long so they rush through it (not always) to cover all of the subjects that their books touch/wish to explain. It's just an exercise to understand opacity. In photoshop at least, you set it with the number keys 1-0, 10%-100% as you work. Some artists just keep doing this because they feel they have more control over opacity.

I don't really see people turning off the pressure sensitivity as much as the opacity, but maybe if they're very lighthanded/heavyhanded it would give more control that way. I can see it helping as well if you're trying to do flats, or you're using it as an exercise to learn how to build up lines or blocks of value by yourself.

TLDR it's so you can learn to manually do what the pressure sensitivity does for you and have more control.
