Who are your favorite comic book artists /ic/? Why do you think that the scene in the states has taken such a massive nosedive in overall visual quality for the past decade?
I'm a really huge fan of Frank Cho's work. Does anyone know if his books are at all helpful? Has ever said what he did to get to where he is or should I just do the basics like grind fundies for a short eternity.

Most of my favorite American comic artists are dead, which I guess explains the state of the industry.

One of the issues is excessive focus on capeshit in mainstream American comics. At one point there were a variety of genres in American comics, just like manga — romance, science fiction, horror, etc., which in turn led expression and craft beyond stagnant capeshit.

Mike Magnola and Slave Labour artists like Roman Dirge, Jhonen Vasquez, Dork etc. I don't know much about comics but those artists are huge inspirations.

He wrote art instruction books? That's a first to me.

I did watch a few streams of him drawing some time last year and cruised through his IG feed. Very no-nonsense approach from what I remember. Funny easy going guy too.

His work is mainly from life models and reference. He faithfully copies anything that fancies him, so he is a good mixture of xerox + taste.

He has a process, so look at that if you want hints as to how he approaches things.

This is going to come across as some new age bullshit but try to reverse your approach. Rather than "grinding fundies", start with an idea and work backwards towards the fundamentals, to the extent that you need them.

To give a loose analogy, practicing scales without seeing how it is incorporated into music is the equivalent of "grinding fundies" without knowing how to apply it.

So do an exercise where you take one of his works that you like and work backwards, and do the same thing for one of your ideas. Loose idea sketch -> fundies.

I like his "Drawing Beautiful Women". When I drew Loomis' female heads, more often than not they end up looking like trannies. I referred to Frank's female heads instead and Im quite satisfied.

Idk if this counts as comic art, but this drawing Gary Villarreal drew is insane. I would totally read a comic in this art style

Some more, this one's from francisco vasquez, although he's from Chile, but It still counts as comic art. There's a lot of good comic artist out there (some on par with some of the best mangaka in my opinion) they're just hard to find.

Been a fan of Travis Charest's artwork since the 90s, where he was an Image guy, then he got his own european-influenced style. He is a slow artist, but values quality over quantity, and it shows.

I don't buy/read comics anymore, but i remember everything becoming very bland/generic looking around the time you mention. I blame the editors. one Marvel artist (Jorge Molina) that actually went to the same college as me had a drawing style that was so fucking cool. I remember following his work on deviantart years ago and then soon after he started penciling for Marvel his work turned into this boring shit

Because they hire their horrid SJW trash straight outa Tumblr of course.
Getting woke fucking destroyed comics and alienated their base.
They are taking a massive financial hit for it too (go woke go broke) but there’s obviously some kind of incentive for it as they certainly aren’t the only industry doing it.

(((Whoever))) is behind this has done it to fucking everything. Feels bad to see such destruction.
