I'm not confused about anything. He puts gesture as chapter 1 to emphasize its importance, but it depends on lower level skills that come off as intuition until he clearly explains them. Commit to 3 point more, the angle on characters is too much and on lion not enough. I hope you'll have some real good shit in the sky, since it's a dominant part and every line points into it. Will be a let down if its just some vague kitty clouds The 'go' sign pops up to much, since it has no repetition of it square shape anywhere else in the pic (lions mane can be square-ish tho). It also overpowers the butterfly and hand. Try to use different shape on the sign, put it way further, blend tonally with background or even use it as a frame for the butterfly story.

you won't get better without drawing, they're gonna look bad no matter what when you start out, if it bothers you that much just don't show them to anybody in real life, I've got books i try to avoid certain pages on just because i can remember how terrible something looks on it, but looking at old work is all part of the learning process, you get more comfortable with it the more you do it

Good idea to start simple. I think you should go more simple though. Right now you're drawing flowing islands, towers made of flesh, spheres with spikes coming out of it.

You should focus on simpler, familiar things like boxes, fruit, cups, and stuff like that. Then those things will give you knowledge that transfers over to your flesh towers.

you can't really train someone to think about what they want to draw, I'd wager that for the most part its impossible to have a fully detailed picture in your head but you can at least start with basics like "lets have a long haired jacked guy sitting on a chair" and then fill in the blanks from there, like what perspective you want, what clothes will be worn, where the light source will emit from, etc.
at least thats how i do it, the more drawing you do the more subconsciously you can visualise what you want.

This is my very first drawing outside of stick figures. Drawn using a mouse(i dont have a tablet) and gimp. Content aside, how does it look for a first drawing? Like I think I made her legs too small, looking at it now.

The hardest part for me was the eyes. I couldn't get them right no matter how many times I tried, so I gave up and just drew what I consider generic anime eyes. Likewise, the hair was really hard.

Anyway for a first drawing it's not too bad is it? Also ignore the shading/coloring... I didn't even attempt to seriously shade it, I just did basic single-shade coloring. It was late at night when I finished and I didn't want to figure out what tools to use to shade.

There was an attempt.
Get some printer paper and some pencils and practice instead of using a mouse.
Don't worry about color when first starting, just do monochrome in the beginning.
Also try to draw something other than cumbrain subjects. Try more innocent things, like everyday objects, and try to get your mind off such degeneracy so you can focus better on art.

>> No.4471436

It sounds dumb, but I think my most fundamental problem is that I don't really grasp what lines are supposed to represent. When I look at an object, I don't see lines, and I have no idea how to decompose it into lines. I end up just slapping down lines more or less randomly in the vague hope that it will end up suggesting the object's features. I assume it's essentially about marking edges, but what amount of contrast is sufficient to make something a "line-worthy" edge? How can I tell whether lines or shading are more appropriate for suggesting a particular feature's appearance?

I feel like I must be missing something obvious and approaching this from the wrong direction.

I do actually find breaking an object down into forms much more intuitive, but I hadn't seen anyone suggesting that this should be done when drawing still lifes and such. The suggested technique in a lot of manuals for beginners basically boils down to "just look at it and draw what you see," which works very poorly for me because lines don't exist and I thus don't see them. If you think I can safely disregard that and move on to construction or something, I would be glad to do so. The only reason I cared is because it's often listed as an important step in the learning process for some reason.

I wish I understood drawing well enough to figure out for myself what I needed to do to learn it, but for now it's still pretty impenetrable, so I have no real choice but to rely on others' suggestions. Thanks for the advice. I generally dislike learning from videos and my internet connection is shit, but I'll see if I can work out a way to check out Vilppu's stuff at some point.

See, an anon on another board said to start out drawing porn because I would be focusing on the human body before moving onto the more complicated step of adding clothes. Plus people would enjoy the porn. So, I thought of something silly and made pic related.

>Don't worry about color when first starting, just do monochrome in the beginning.
Yeah I didn't intend on coloring the drawing, but before I posted it here I filled it in just to see what it would look like colored and thought it was better than posting a b&w image.

>Get some printer paper and some pencils and practice instead of using a mouse.
I guess I can do this. Mouse/PC is just so much more convenient though.... with layering, erasing, etc.

You're welcome, Anon!

You don't have to draw porn to focus on the human body. Not everybody likes porn, I'm not much of a fan of it, but I'll still drawn non-porn nudes to help me improve. Maybe start somewhere more simple, like these shapes. Most things can be broken down into simple shapes or combinations of them after all.
When you start working with paper and pencil, try not to draw too small, use as much of the page as you can without going uncomfortably close to the edge. Also be light with your pencil so you can erase things easier, and try holding it at different angles when shading to get more of the graphite's surface against the paper.
