I use a mix of methods.
For certain shapes of things I'm comfortable with it's easier and looks better to just go straight in and start drawing without thinking too much.
For things I'm less comfortable with and haven't really drawn before, like particular foreshortened views of the body, it's helpful to break things down into simple boxes to think more clearly about how it will look.
Boxes are just one more tool in your toolbox. It's wrong to base your entire drawing methodology around boxes or say that they solve every artistic problem, and it's wrong to say that boxes are useless or make your work soulless. They're just one more tool, take it or leave it, use them when they're helpful and don't use them when they're not. It's actually really simple, but zealots on both sides of the argument make it harder than it needs to be.

this pandering of loomis and others similar altho not wrong, has reached a point where its so annoying and dogmatic i dont even blame /beg/'s that think its trolling

I am guilty of trolling people by just saying "Loomis" before.
I know I'm not the only one.

True, in a way, using boxes or similar crutches, is like cheating in art.
It's the same if you scan a drawing of yours, scale it digitally bigger, and then print it on canvas to paint over it.
Things like this will make your stuff look less artistic in the end, that's one of the reasons I try to avoid it, and only use crutches when they are really necessary.

For art to be really good, it has to be spontaneous. If you are constantly afraid of making mistakes and always have to resort to crutches, your art will look stiff and boring.

it isn't bad to use construction in the first few times drawing certain things but I agree with anon. My art always looks more interesting when it is drawn spontaneously.

OP has just been practicing and can now make good art without construction layers. Congrats, OP. Nice job, fren.

>>4455861
spontaneous? are you fucking stupid where is that written. theres thousands of great paintings by vermeer, rembrandt, and peter paul reubens that were portraits of people who had a very narrow and controlled perspective of the finished piece. you sound like your typical artfag loser who talks more than he draws post your work

>> No.4455893

I like to run without construction layers when I want something surreal and exaggerated. If I'm doing something with any precision, I need at least one construction layer.

I never said you never should use crutches, I just said, you should try to avoid them whenever possible.

Being a good artist is a lot about having freedom on the canvas. If you are truely free, you don't need to draw boxes anymore.

You don't need an underlying construction, but it helps to push shapes and define form.
