**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Just get tracing paper and copy whatever you want until you can draw it without the copy paper, it might take you like 100+ times but once you nail down a specifics artists techniques you're able to draw like them on paper. It works way better than fundies for me.

>>4446343
it's not from imagination i used a reference, but I only looked it for the arms, the rest I did completely by memory. I can however draw from imagination it's just that I don't have a distinct style yet, so everything I draw is too similar to the artists I copy. I'm hoping to naturally progress.

Not him, but it seems you are confusing observational drawing with copying; observational drawing is analyzing and deducing a figure in order to develop an approach to the whole. Copying will not provide you with the same though process instead if hinders your ability to use a methodological approach by copying contours without taking into consideration other elements such as spatial relationships with overlapping, superimposed, and foreshortened forms.

In other words, stop copying anime.

This. studying fundamentals is free, easy gains. I don't even know how someone would dedicate a mountain of time studying ONLY fundies though. Even copying, I mean studying, Loomis is studying an artstyle popular during his period.
Studying the fundies AND (insert artstyle) here is the best way to learn art unless you just want to draw medical anatomically correct soulless bodies. It's how the East AND West has been studying for centuries.
Learning how to draw isn't that hard, let alone a magical unsolved equation. The only thing hard is dedicating the hours of conscious hours of study to improve.

Okay then. Use Loomis' techniques without opening a single Loomis book. Because that is what you just implied. Observational drawing and copying are more or less the same thing. Just depends on how closely you decide to copy the original. I assume your talking about doing a study or whatever which is literally just copying under a more pleasant name. Artists deduce what the original artist was doing through copying. They are clearly using construction and trying to copy their shapes. They aren't just laying down lines from scratch. You're so desperate to meme that you're coming off as a retard.

If I drew something with my hand and my pencil and my paper and my brain, it is mine. It could be perfectly copied to a t and it would still be mine. The drawing that a five year old made copying a cartoon character is their drawing. It doesn't matter how accurate or inaccurate they were in their copying. The drawing is their. They own it. They made it. It is their property. Fanart is not the property of creators. The concept of that fanart is. You're saying that building a house based on another design of another house means that the house you built is not yours. You don't own the rights to any concept or design but that house you built with your own two hands is yours. Stop trolling. You're so desperate to not be wrong that you go to insane mental gymnastics. I'm not talking about copyright. Neither the police nor the creator of whatever you're aping have the right to break into your home and destroy or take what you drew just because you based it on their work. The creation itself, the physical thing that you can experience with one of your five senses(you have one of those, right? or maybe you're just a robot which is why this is so hard to understand) belongs to you and you alone. I made this shit scribble with my knobby hands. No fat stinky japanese man had anything to do with it. I do not own the property. I do not own this character. But I do own these pixels. These pixels that I laid down with my own clicking fingers and hands on my mouse. Masahiro Sakurai does not own this drawing. He owns the character depicted in it.

Imagine you're an actual good artist. You create a nice piece of art. It took creativity, imagination, technical skill, and time. Your hard work and sweat went into making that look good. It's yours in both senses: of your mind and of your property.
Now some nigger comes along. He sees what you created. He likes it. He decides to study it. Now he's is significantly less skilled so he has to rely on what you've already put in the effort of figuring out in order to bring the copy to fruition. He finishes. He, without a doubt, owns that image that he just made. But it is not his in the first sense of the word I described: intellectually. Intellectually, it belongs to the original creator. You see someone ask for an example of his work, and he posts his copy of your drawing! You're a bit irked because although he did TECHNICALLY draw that, its not really a good representation of what his own creative mind is capable of.
Do you see what I'm getting at?

Sketchtranny, you're like a guy who's learning to play the piano but only plays one chord. Just the same chord, over and over again. Three notes, root position. You spend every day just playing that chord over and over again, not even trying to vary the way you play it, no difference in dynamics, nothing intentional anyway, you just sit there and absentmindedly slap away at that one chord for hours at a time. People ask you "why don't you play a different chord?" or "why don't you try learning a song?" or "why don't you do ANYTHING else?" and your response is "no, learning songs is for losers and will get you nowhere, look at that guy he learned songs for six months and he still sucks, I need to learn my fundamentals so I'm gonna practice this chord until it's absolutely perfect, just you wait, when I actually play this chord in a song it's gonna be the best sounding chord ever!" and then you go back to practicing that one chord. Never trying. Never improving. Sitting in your comfort zone. Over and over. Forever and ever. The only progress that you'll ever make is in the damage to your wrist. I feel sorry for you, I genuinely do.

make the waist and neck thinner
make the legs longer or the torso smaller
the external oblique overlapping the iliac crest is a feature more present in men, women have fat pods in this area so it should be smoother

If you've actually studied Loomis for a couple of hours you would find that even Loomis himself instructs you to observe from nature, in other words make observational drawings from life and I quote "when all else fails, nature is the best instructor" it just takes a little bit of critical thinking, and an attention span long enough to study details before your ADHD sperg out session and bouts of autism kicks back in.

You're not just drawing a cylinder for the sake of drawing a goddamn cylinder, when you're applying basic forms you are doing one of many things:

Simplifying a complex form into a basic form
Establishing its perspective
Providing the means to add other forms on top in relationship to its perspective, proportion, and anatomical information
This is also why we use box forms because it provides you with information relative to perspective, orientation in space, its tilt and even go as far as provide landmarks to the figure such as the bony landmarks that are a great source of showing which direction the form is in space. But again keep copying those outlines and keep wondering why your drawings come out completely flat, stiff, and void of any sense of space. Stay stupid, /ic/.

Ok here's the thing.
Beginners try and use boxes to do all that stuff and their drawings still look like hot garbage.
They only improve after years of practice and, usually, drawing lots of figures from reference, i.e. copying.
Thus because I have never seen a beginner successfully apply boxes and get good results, I conclude that it's the mileage and intuition that's doing most of the work, not the boxes.

>> No.4447378

Box FORM you drooling retard. You are not drawing boxes in itself, the figure does not look like a goddamn box the box FORM is only there to provide you with a base to work from; you will require anatomical knowledge to refine its form to reflect that of a pelvis, pectoral muscles, hands, etc. Think of the box form as something malleable that would conform to a pelvis like putty after sculpting it.

>> No.4447386

I mean, we're clearly just converging on "just sketch bro and feel it out and as you learn more you'll be able to refine things more". Which is what we always converge on. Which leaves the question as to what sets your method apart and what you fundiesfags are sperging out so hard over.
Do you think copyfags aren't allowed to sketch or something? Of course I sketch, I try to find some loose lines that will capture the feeling of the form I'm drawing. I use wrapping lines when they seem appropriate, otherwise just a contour suffices. How is that different from what you do?

I think a lot of these issues would be cleared up if people stopped associating copyfags as distinct from fundiefags. Ideally you should be both. Studies involve breaking down an artstyle and replicating it, usually with the implication that you know enough "fundamentals" to know why an artist does what he does.
This East vs. West thing is unproductive on both ends. It's teaching bad habits to anons that can fix most of their problems by just studying fundies, and it's teaching "fundiefags" that they can adopt an interesting, stylized art style immediately so long as they study anatomy for 2 years.
Also it's a huge distraction from actually talking about interesting things to study.

Short answer is I want to use twitter for other stuff and long answer is a) I felt like the fuuka2rin account had lost focus b) the better I got the harder it was for me to accept my past drawings and c) after a summer of frustration and trashed drawings I sent a drunken "how2getgood" DM to one of my idols and got a kind reply that completely dismantled me and that's when I closed my account lmao. From now on I'll mostly sit in this thread posting Hitokaku copies. My new twitter is ycjob but it will have an animation slant. fuuka2rin will live on as a porn/painting account on Pixiv. Sorry for the blog

Blue line is the circle that you might start with (it can vary in size of course, Loomis probably explains the ideal size in his book?) and red is the lines that you might want to end up with. >studying ONLY fundies though.
I thought the road map was
Study fundies -> copy artstyle
Im trying to say is that shouldnt you need to study the basics to draw then if you already know how to draw then you can now study a certain artstyle

That's the misconception that most people have.
You don't just study the fundies and at a certain point you're just done with them and you can draw anything.,
That's not how it works.
You'll continue to study the fundies for basically your entire lifetime.
If you're going to wait for that magical moment of being done with fundies before you start learning to draw in a certain style, you'll never get anywhere.

Damn, your linework was pretty good even back then. How much prior experience did you have with drawing?

I'm ultra retarded. How do I trace/copy digitally? I mean the technical aspect.
Say I have a reference picture that's 1000x1500. But it's obvious it originally was drawn in like 4x-8x resolution. Do I upscale it and use a huge canvas or work as is? I'm asking because resolution affects visual perception and changes how some of the digital tools behave (how lines are coming out, pressure sensitivity, texture resolution, etc). Which also kinda leads me to the next question.
Should I try to recreate the whole workflow, including all the tools and techniques used by the original artist, or just aim for the end result while using what I'm familiar and comfortable with?
So far I was drawing only traditionally. In SAI (which I found to be the most comfortable for me based on the drawing feel, even though its keyboard shortcuts are quite unorthodox) I naturally gravitate towards the pencil and ink pens and I also have some basic image editing/post-processing experience in other programs, but people are using all kinds of brushes, blending techniques, utility tools and image editing.
If an artist I'm copying uses 3D models and custom brushes should I do it too? Or focus on making a copy of the final image using only a basic hard round brush?

If you're having fun and finding it interesting you should definitely continue, that's when we learn the most

>>4451449
Thanks. I drew a lot as a kid but obviously wasn't very good by Internet standards. Then I quit for many years. Bought a tablet in 2015

What the other anon said, though you can make a strong argument that studying SOME fundamental basics is very useful to get down before copying. These could include basic perspective, the shape/proportions of the face and body, and actual observational/measuring skills so you can copy much more effectively without getting frustrated that your anime heads are so out of proportion. (You can spend around a few weeks doing this if you're an absolute beginner.)
All this does is help you understand WHY you're studying the lines/shadows anime artists are making and not just mindlessly copying.

Overall: you should study anime because 1) you find it fun, and 2) you're drawing and therefore improving your skill while doing so. As well, you should be studying the fundamentals while drawing anime and, I also advise, drawing from life and studying human proportions, muscle groups, etc. Studying fundies gives you amazing amounts of gains, but you need to apply them to something you enjoy drawing to actually see the improvement, in this case anime.

To that anon who's looking animator twitter to copy his/her style, I have another suggestion:
Atsuko Nozaki
https://twitter.com/nonoo9999999

She's animator that not only accomplished in action, effects, but also in character acting. As you can see she often post drawings with the right fundamentals for beginners to learn:

Another book that I can recommend is Junichi Hayama's muscle drawing. He's a veteran animator that designed the 90s Jojo OVA (which has amazing techinicality by the way), and the master of Yoshihiko Umakoshi and Terumi Nishii. Nishii said that she learned so much from copying/learning Hayama's animation.

Like with your arm and hand? I suppose just more practice. It's basically like a muscle you build up over time, just like weightlifting.

Well I have no medical expertise on this sort of thing if you have any problems that separate you from the average person, but as someone with arguably bad handwriting himself what helps me is basically just lots of drawing practice and being conscious about making cleaner, better lines. It's hard at first, and it gave me tons of headaches and arm/wrist pains, but eventually your muscle memory develops.
