Just get tracing paper and copy whatever you want until you can draw it without the copy paper, it might take you like 100+ times but once you nail down a specifics artists techniques you're able to draw like them on paper. It works way better than fundies for me.

it's not from imagination i used a reference, but I only looked it for the arms, the rest I did completely by memory. I can however draw from imagination it's just that I don't have a distinct style yet, so everything I draw is too similar to the artists I copy. I'm hoping to naturally progress.

I do the lineart before I color. I don't really have a process or anything and the way I color changes every time I color, really. I don't usually get to the stage of coloring things in the first place because I usually just doodle and give up.
I guess I usually have a few references open to look at and attempt to emulate the painting style of but I really just fiddle around until I think it looks good or I don't know how to make it look better.

Loomis is not a "go to all" solution, when we refer you to Loomis that is because we are implying you are an absolute beginner that knows fuck all because you asked an incredibly stupid question and Loomis is a great source of information on introducing you to the basic forms and properties required to be able to replicate the manner of style in your posted picture. You're not just drawing a cylinder for the sake of drawing a goddamn cylinder, when you're applying basic forms you are doing one of many things:

Simplifying a complex form into a basic form
Establishing its perspective
Providing the means to add other forms on top in relationship to its perspective, proportion, and anatomical information
This is also why we use box forms because it provides you with information relative to perspective, orientation in space, its tilt and even go as far as provide landmarks to the figure such as the bony landmarks that are a great source of showing which direction the form is in space. But again keep copying those outlines and keep wondering why your drawings come out completely flat, stiff, and void of any sense of space. Stay stupid, /ic/.

Beginners try and use boxes to do all that stuff and their drawings still look like hot garbage.
They only improve after years of practice and, usually, drawing lots of figures from reference, i.e. copying.
Thus because I have never seen a beginner successfully apply boxes and get good results, I conclude that it's the mileage and intuition that's doing most of the work, not the boxes.

I think a lot of these issues would be cleared up if people stopped associating copyfags as distinct from fundiefags. Ideally you should be both. Studies involve breaking down an artstyle and replicating it, usually with the implication that you know enough "fundamentals" to know why an artist does what he does.
This East vs. West thing is unproductive on both ends. It's teaching bad habits to anons that can fix most of their problems by just studying fundies, and it's teaching "fundiefags" that they can adopt an interesting, stylized art style immediately so long as they study anatomy for 2 years.
Also it's a huge distraction from actually talking about interesting things to study.

That's the misconception that most people have.
You don't just study the fundies and at a certain point you're just done with them and you can draw anything.,
That's not how it works.
You'll continue to study the fundies for basically your entire lifetime.
If you're going to wait for that magical moment of being done with fundies before you start learning to draw in a certain style, you'll never get anywhere.

I'm ultra retarded. How do I trace/copy digitally? I mean the technical aspect.
Say I have a reference picture that's 1000x1500. But it's obvious it originally was drawn in like 4x-8x resolution. Do I upscale it and use a huge canvas or work as is? I'm asking because resolution affects visual perception and changes how some of the digital tools behave (how lines are coming out, pressure sensitivity, texture resolution, etc). Which also kinda leads me to the next question.
Should I try to recreate the whole workflow, including all the tools and techniques used by the original artist, or just aim for the end result while using what I'm familiar and comfortable with?
So far I was drawing only traditionally. In SAI (which I found to be the most comfortable for me based on the drawing feel, even though its keyboard shortcuts are quite unorthodox) I naturally gravitate towards the pencil and ink pens and I also have some basic image editing/post-processing experience in other programs, but people are using all kinds of brushes, blending techniques, utility tools and image editing.
If an artist I'm copying uses 3D models and custom brushes should I do it too? Or focus on making a copy of the final image using only a basic hard round brush?

What the other anon said, though you can make a strong argument that studying SOME fundamental basics is very useful to get down before copying. These could include basic perspective, the shape/proportions of the face and body, and actual observational/measuring skills so you can copy much more effectively without getting frustrated that your anime heads are so out of proportion. (You can spend around a few weeks doing this if you're an absolute beginner.)
All this does is help you understand WHY you're studying the lines/shadows anime artists are making and not just mindlessly copying.

Overall: you should study anime because 1) you find it fun, and 2) you're drawing and therefore improving your skill while doing so. As well, you should be studying the fundamentals while drawing anime and, I also advise, drawing from life and studying human proportions, muscle groups, etc. Studying fundies gives you amazing amounts of gains, but you need to apply them to something you enjoy drawing to actually see the improvement, in this case anime.

Another book that I can recommend is Junichi Hayama's muscle drawing. He's a veteran animator that designed the 90s Jojo OVA (which has amazing techinicality by the way), and the master of Yoshihiko Umakoshi and Terumi Nishii. Nishii said that she learned so much from copying/learning Hayama's animation.

Well I have no medical expertise on this sort of thing if you have any problems that separate you from the average person, but as someone with arguably bad handwriting himself what helps me is basically just lots of drawing practice and being conscious about making cleaner, better lines. It's hard at first, and it gave me tons of headaches and arm/wrist pains, but eventually your muscle memory develops.
