Well damn, I was supposed to practice copies but I spent the entire week turd polishing instead. At least I have a better idea what not to do now, it was a bad idea to put placeholders for eyes and try to correct them later. I can't fit them if I didn't integrate them into the face from the start. Also verboten is coloring the rough draft, turns out people do lineart for a reason. You end up seeing way later that some things look off, and they're very difficult to fix with color in place.

Anyway, it will be copies until April and anatomy after.

This is my first attempt at painting. I used some brushes but smearing out the paint was difficult (you can see the canvas peering through in the sky), not sure if it was because of the brushes, the paint or the lack of paint thinner. I'm content with the mountains and overall it turned out better than expected, yet it somehow still feels 'halfassed' and about everything in the foreground (the rocks, poppeys and trees) are a mess.

Can I get some general tips on oil painting and some critiques? I'm thinking about painting more often since this went better than expected

No, but rather her thighs are way too big. Now I know it's stylized but you still need to adhere to proper proportions. There are established proportions for male, female, children, anime guys, anime girls, chibis etc. The proportions you're going for doesn't fit the face of your figure. Looks like youre working on loomis heads. Assuming you understand the technique, it's really a matter of mileage. Just keep drawing the heads in the loomis book. Then, draw from outside references. It's very important that you grasp the concept of form and planes of the face. There are sections in the book that focuses on each feature of the head, study and draw them also.

if you want to work out cov, you'ld do a quick top down mockup of the scene, and draw a ~60 degree angle on your observer, things outside would become increasingly distorted if you drew them.
as a bonus, the top view also lets you find the vanishing points of boxy things in normal 2 point perspective. cyan is some hypothetical box, if you shove the sides outwards until they cross the observer, you find its vps.

for drawings looking up at some angle like your arches where you have a vertical vp, you'ld work from a side view as well, and you'ld use the same method for finding vps.

At this point, Im just grinding heads from photo references using Loomis method. Procedure? Read Loomis or watch Proko's vid on the body part you want to learn. Understand and absorb how he does it in the video, unironically feel the form. Then, apply what you learned by redrawing what he did and by drawing from other photo references. Lastly, share your work here for critique. Once in a blue moon a helpful anon comes around and itll be worth it.

Thanks to experimentation, I figures out how to make landscapes seem distant (use haze) and how to convey the shapes of rocky mountains.
But now I struggle to find out the same with forests. I tried cloud-like outlines around the flat colour, I tried pointy, I tried drawing entire trees, nothing worked.
How do I add details to forests to make them look like are composed of trees and how high they are.
what I specifically want to do is to make a forest of giant trees that form a tall canopy, so that the image ends up being filled with the green treetops stretching to the horizon.

Keep drawing and trust the process. Loomis' 'Drawing the Head and Hands' discusses each facial feature in depth. It should address your symbol drawing. But for now 'Fun with a pencil' is a fine choice as well.

Thanks anon, I'll check that book out. so far I've gotten to the beginning of postures in fun with a pencil but I think Im going to stick with the head grind for about a month and that book will be useful.

One thing I've been doing to address my symbol drawing is actually taking references of each facial feature and attempting to break them down into 3D objects, but a set of guidelines will be very helpful. So far I've studied eyes && lips.

I just need to keep on drawing. One thing I noticed is that in between a head I take too long of a break. I need to try to do 4 references at a time so I spend less time dilly dallying

Putting aside the issues with anatomy, I think you could benefit from doing more fabric and clothing studies. The idea of a flamenco skirt on a witch is not an unappealing one, but the construction of the skirt you've drawn is nonsensical. A skirt, flamenco or otherwise, has volume. It shouldn't just stop existing beyond the bent leg. It should continue behind that leg. Clothes and fabric drape. The folds you've drawn to approximate the ruffles on a flamenco skirt are incorrect. I don't even know what's going on with the sleeves.

Study clothing construction.

Is it a good idea for me to draw using 3d models vs pics of actual models performing the action if I don't have my fundamentals 100% down? What I mean, is I want to draw an OC having intercourse, but the way I want to, I doubt there are irl images with them in the positions I want. Further more, are there simple modeling softwares on PC that also include genitals? Silly questions I have, but I'd rather ask and get told no than not ask and never know.

You know, after taking a long enough break from art to sort of catch up on my other hobbies, I think I had a massive realization. I get it now. I fucking get it why I hated posting here and kept avoiding it. My art, even at the best it is right now, it's fucking shit. And I thought I had the drive to improve, but I don't. And I never will. I will always just kinda deal with that I will never get to see my OCs on paper or doing something cool unless I pay someone to do it. Anyone else go through this realization and get out of it? It's just so crystal clear for me right now. TL;DR I am shit at art, will never improve and I'm okay with that because now I can focus on other hobbies of mine.

Love it anon, the hatching is great, varied and indicates form well, good variation and creativityin the contents, sadly everything is wonky if this were in good perspective this would be a stand out piece regardless of if you view it as 'style' or not.

Thanks anon, and yeah the perspective sucks, i will work on that.

>> No.4442371

how concerned should i be about perspective as a /beg/? i’ve hit the boxes part of both drawabox and dynamic sketching. do i just practice simple boxes for a few days? or should i start reading books on the subject in addition to my other studies?
