Do I actually need a drawing tablet to do digital art?

I want to learn how to do digital painting/concept art style stuff and I feel like doing so with a mouse would be stupid, but I don't want to drop $100+ on a drawing tablet without having any idea what I'm doing.

You don't need the most up to date tablet if you don't want one. I've been using my Bamboo for about 8 years now

You don't need a screen one, but a normal one is pretty cheap nowadays and serves the same function while being (arguably) ergonomically and technically better.

>ergonomically and technically better
yea no. However it will still do you good. If you haven't done anything digitally yet, always start with a cheap used Wacom tablet. Most of them work the same.

Do you honestly expect to not need to spend on your tools?
Yes, you can do digital art with a smartphone or a 90's desktop with MS paint, but is that what it means to do art for you? You don't "need" anything fancier, in the same way you don't "need" a house, a car or a bed.

Besides, all of the devices in your picture are cheap. Even the most expensive one, if you stay with it for eight years like >>4405228 has done with theirs, it'll cost some 22 cents a day. As an expense it's basically nil if it's the tool you use to get your income.

god I wish I could afford any of those

If you're only just starting with art and not yet sure whether you'd like it, I recommend starting with plain old paper and pencil. Although the texture of paper is very different from the texture of a tablet, most skills carry over, and it's definitely the cheapest option. Otherwise screenless tablets are pretty cheap, though not as intuitive as monitor tablets. Advantage of a screenless tablet is that you can also stick a sheet of paper onto it for a more coarse texture.

Yea yea, but only for the ergonomics part.

What's the best screen tablet I can get for <$500?

Try doing it with a mouse if you want. It won't take long for you to realize why everyone uses tablets.

I wouldn't consider a screen tablet on that budget.

You can buy a good medium sized screenless tablet for like 50 bucks.

Xp-Pen Deco 01v2 cost 60$ and is fucking good man.
That's the only tablet you need.

You will get it thinking you will upgrade later and just fucking keep it for years instead.

Xp-Pen Artist pro 13 or 16
Same with huion Kamvas.

>>4405446
The NEW ones are legit good, but pay attention they still sell the old ones.
Look for the Kamvas PRO and Artist PRO branding and reasearch a bit, those are the new.

I have an XP-Pen Artist 15.6 and wanna upgrade. Is the Cintiq 22 good or is there something similar on the market?

Wacom non-pro sucks.
That includes the non-pro intuos(rebrandeed bamboo) and their Cintiq line too.

They just make sure their budget offering wouldn't compete with their PRO products.

Anything but the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 will just cripple yourself. You NEED something that actually perfectly replicates traditional tools, with no parallax issues, no lag, no display panel gap, and nothing else other than the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 does this.
